Sad to say that he is still missing.

Governor Plenty has now signed an order asking the National Guard for help. You can find more Here

Thanks to Steve Fellegy for the information.

Acer,

Not sure if they are looking for volunteers or not.

You can call either the Mille Lacs County Sheriff @ 320-983-8250 or the Aitkin County Sheriff @ 218-927-7435 to inquire. With many cabin owners absent for the season and not nearly as much traffic up here it will be hard to patrol the 103 miles of shoreline.

I had a Blackhawk come along the shore Sat. morning. low. They went out and it appeared they covered the islands in wahkon Bay. I call my wife's sister and her husband up on the north end of Hawkbill and it came by their place also. That is the only way, from the air, to do this, IMHO. The number of reefs off the shore make it tough to do it from a boat and given the H2O temps..I wonder how much boyancy there would be.

This must just be beyond belief tough on his family and friends.

Please, wear survival gear on ML in the fall. Alone, I always have mine on.

I just called the Mille Lacs County Times and they have heard nothing about him being found as of yesterday. They did say the National Guard is involved now.

Thoughts and prays go out for a quick recovery.

NO!! They have not found him as of yet. Many of us have spent quite a few hours on the water with no success. We need to find him soon, or god forbid, he will not be found until the water warms up this coming spring. frown

in addition to covering more water and visibility from the air i remember reading years ago that the thump from a copter helps to make a submerged body surface. just like in the old days when they would fire off a cannon. it's good to know they are pulling no punches trying to give his loved ones final closure as fast as possible. if it was me i know i'd be going crazy by now with hope he somehow is not gone.

Not to be to negative, but are they waiting for the body to surface, and if so, depending on what he was wearing weight wise, he might not surface. Am I correct in that assumption.

To try and be all PC about this, yes what he was wearing could impact re-surfacing, but after anything dies, the remains begin to decompose which creates a lot of gas, mostly carbon dioxide which should counter any excess weight. Cold water may slow that process down quite a bit though

That makes sense. Wow it has to be tough on the family. I hope no one ever has to go through this again.

Be safe, and be smart out there.

With my experience it is known in cold water the body will not decompose and it sinks to the bottom. In the spring when the water warms up the body will start to decompose at faster rate, when the gasses are released the body will surface. also the search and rescue diver I spoke with yesterday mentioned when the chopper is in the air they can usually see about 10' deep in the water. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family!

I called up to the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s department and could not get a firm answer if they had found him or not.

I then called the Mille Lacs Messenger and the gal had checked with some one who is in charge of covering the details about the search. She said they have not found him and they have given up the search as of now.

I was also told they have not found him by the Mille County Times, but the woman did not know if they had given up yet.

Not good news. frown I hope Paul finds some better news!

"The missing angler has not been found as of today. The National Guard choppers etc. have been called off. water core temps are now 37-38 degreees and thus, the threshold for re-surfacing is generally gone. Periodic fly-overs will continue through ice up by DNR and State Trooper pilots."

I found this on another forum

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
