OPEN SEAT OR LOOKING FOR A FISHING PARTNER?

Recommended Posts

I saw Team Otter do this in another forum and thought it was a great idea.

So if your looking for a person to fill a empty seat or need a ride post it here. Heck even looking for someone to shore fish or smelt with later.

Ill start it out.

I have a open seat at 3:45 today on the St. Louis River. Launch out of Clyde/Smithville landing.

E-mail me at [email protected] before 2pm and we can set it up.

I'm up in Duluth for the school year while my boat sits at home in Brainerd. I'd really like to get out on any type of water, but seeing as how the only rod I have up here is my muskie rod and 2 lures, which I accidentally left in my car the last time i went home, I guess all I could really go out for are muskie. If anyone in the area is going out alone and needs someone to net their fish for them I'd like to tag along, I could pay you for gas in a couple of weeks. haha, after I get a job.

Bronzeback Ill keep you in mind next time out. Look here daily and Ill post when Im getting out. I would love to trade a few trips with ya. I love that Brainerd area but havent fished it much. Whats the best walleye lake down that way besides Mille Lacs?

To be honest with you, walleye are really the only fish I don't actively target. I've gotten a couple bonus eyes fishing on the river for smallmouth, even a boatside strike from a walleye on a muskie bait believe it or not. But seeing as how I don't really target the fish I dont ask anyone what the best lakes are. I have heard shamineau and alexander are decent walleye lakes though. Apparently the bite was tough on both this summer though from the little bit of news I did hear.

and also to be honest with you the only kind of trip I'm really good for in Brainerd is one down the Mississippi. I've got a small aluminum boat that's seen just about all that the miss. has to offer down there.

Great idea on starting up this forum northlander ive seen it in a few other forums and it seems to work well. Its also a great way to meet other fmers face to face. Im a college student up here and dont have a boat but would love to get out in a boat around here. So if anyone ever has an open spot I would be more than happy to buy some bait and cover some gas!

Happy fishing

We ran sleds and wheelers all over the lake for last years event and that was on the 8th I believe so Im betting we will have plenty of ice. May be some slush like last year but we will find a way to our spots. We always seem to. The slush is what sucks. Not to mention last years COLD morning then warm afternoon made getting back a "adventure". Remember Woodies house? LOL. grin

would someone be able to pull me out on their wheeler? I don't have one, and its a good distance to walk pulling a house.

Thanks Steve - I think my wheeler and house are still thawing out! I think if i had left the plow to my wheeler @ home i could have never got my house off that place. I had to plow a road through the water to get the slush out of the way so my house (on 2x4 skids) could make the adventure through the water. UMDguy got a heck of a ride on the back of the sled on the way back. It was nice to plow a road out there during the day when it was froze...but wading in 2' of water to get ice wasn't fun at all!

Not to mention me launching my wheeler off the back of my truck and off the ramps when i got home due to my brakes/calipers freezing up solid. It took a good 2 days @ 90 degrees in the garage to get it to thaw out so i could bring 'er to the shop to get fixed.

Lesson learned. I'll definately have a battery pack this year. After all the issues last year starting wheelers and sleds....a battery pack on the lake isn't a bad idea!

Steve/Chadwick - see the other posting about the gathering. I got a treat for you steve in my wallet.

Bobbersup! I was just out there yesterday for the first time (Chequamegon Bay), 2 White fish and 1 smelt. Thinking going back on friday morning. I have all the gear but no sled so limited by how far I can pull. Hoping for trout and salmon but will take what I get. I'll find out in AM if I'll have a spare seat. Maybe swap phone #'s and try different locations to find the hot spot.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
