3rd Base for 2009

There is no way the twins get rid of Young. He is young, really good hitter, potential for 20 homers, good arm, yet clueless on fly balls, just to much potential to trade. I would like to see Beltre or Blake. Cuddy was terrible at 3rd two years ago. Cuddy makes more sense as a back-up to outfield, dh, and back up to Morneau who should get many more days of next year, as we all saw his season ending output fall the last two weeks, due to being over used(man, I work 270 days a year, nobody tells me I need a break).

a big NO to Joe "i'll miss half a season, every season" Crede and Blalock (we will not be acquiring more lefties)

cuddyer has been tried, and was alright, not as bad as people think. and its his ONLY spot next year. when corey koskie got originally moved to 3rd (minors) he was awful, he became a gold glove caliber player. Morneau was not good at all defensively at first and now is the 2nd best fielding first baseman. with reps cuddy can succeed there, if he refuses..punch his ticket out of town. there is no room. Young will be in left, Gomez in center and span in right. Kubel DH's. thats whats best for the team if they arent going to go out and acquire a guy like Atkins.

the twins have (but wont spend) OVER 20 MILLION to spend. They could actually sign a guy like AJ Burnett and acquire a 3B, pay them AND keep this team intact for years. we cant just sit still and not make moves this year. This town/state wants and deserves a shot at the Series especially after buying them a new venue.

all them have been the worst signings ever and what we get out of them? maybe 30 homeruns over past 3 years. Just stick with Buscher and let him mature and get use to playing every day. We don't need homeruns to win ball games. Just situational hitting is the key and thats what this team is best at.

The Twins lead the league in hitting with 2 outs and runners in scoring position and it didn't get us to the playoffs. How mant HR's did the Twins have this year? 100 something? Last in the bigs. We need a power hitting 3B.

I forgot what beat us in the White Sox game.....

what beat us in that game was not getting any hits, not the one homerun they got. you find me a team who can win with just 2 hits besides the one gamew this year where they got no-hit against them but other team had walks and errors. i believe the twins don't need any 3B out there and stick with what we got and let them develop another year.

Let's face it...the Twins had a remarkable year batting with runners in scoring position (they batted over 300 +). It's almost historical numbers here. Don't count on this happening again. They need some power at the 3rd base spot and overall team power needs to step up as well or they will not contend in the Central next year. I like the idea of playing Cuddy at 3rd as well after seeing what's out there. I, too believe this is his only spot on this team going forward. Too much youth/speed/talent in the outfield to get rid of any of them. Cuddy can provide the right handed pop in this line-up IF he can stay healthy.

Oh, I'm sure the Twins will just plug him into 3rd base because everyone here thinks it's the only way he can stay with the team. After all, the posters on this sight have been dead on with every move they wanted made this year. Please read this dripping with sarcasm.

Cuddy is too good to be a bench player, so he will have to play third. Obviously there is a long off-season and spring-training to work at playing third, Cicada.

My point is the guys that think this is the solution to making the Twins win 90% of their games (this seems to be what they expect from the team), all they have to do is "simply" put him in another spot. Do you seriously think a player can become an all-star in a new position over an off-season? Because, if he doesn't, he will be crucified AGAIN regularly on this sight. By the middle of next year, they will be crying for his head on a platter. We have it good when rooting for our team, most here just wouldn't know it.

Bill Hall. We'll trade you straight up for Cuddyer. Throw in Span and you can have JJ Hardy. You'd be all set at short and 3rd.

Hey ULT, saw the old 20" box fan fell off the first page. Suppose after 36,900+ views and 281 posts it got boring?

IMO the Twins don't need a whole lot of help at any fielding position. Buscher played great at 3rd and so did Harris. If they are looking at an infield position they could go with a Short Stop and move Punto to 3rd. He is the best defensive player on the entire team! Punto makes about 98% of routine plays and makes A TON of great ones. Cuddy is on a new contract so I don't think hes going anywhere.

It would make sense that Span and Gomez stay in center and right.

Young is a scary outfielder but keep in mind hes about 21 y.o. I would consider rotating Young, Cuddy, and Kubel. Having one play left, one DH, one sitting. You could also give Span or Gomez a day off more often and move Cuddy or Kubel to right and push Span to center on an offday for Gomez.

Basically the Twins are in a GOOD but Difficult spot. Too many good outfielders.

The Twins love building up young guys and I don't see a need to bring in a free agent that is going to fail as badly as almost every free agent has after Shannon Stewart joined the club.

Look from within and if trades are made, get some more bullpen guys..... Is Neshek going to be back in '09?

Buscher played great at 3rd and so did Harris.

Buscher played a terrible third base! He couldn't field a ball or make an accurate throw to first to save his life! I did like his hitting but third base was not the spot for him.

Harris on the other hand was a great third basemam. They should find a permanent positon for him.

harris wasn't great at third either. there is quite a difference between "great" and "adequate"-which harris was

I suppose with the way Buscher played third it would make Harris look better than he really is. I still think he should be an option though.

Did I hear correctly this weekend, Ol Sid was wishing for us to sign Manny????? I know he isn't a 3rd baseman and it's off the subject but a free agent is a free agent.

Could we just combine the hitting of Buscher and the Defense of Harris and have one GOOD 3rd baseman? Personally I still think Buscher did an ok job. I was looking through the Twins top plays throughout the year and there are a fair amount of Brian Buscher plays listed... A nice throw to home to prevent a Padres run that was very important comes to mind! He also made some nice plays covering and fielding bunts barehanded!

Harris also made his fair share of nice plays there. A couple in that Chicago series come to mind at the least.

I would just put those two on a rotation based on how there batting! - Although some players can't take the inconsistent starts!

ANYWAYS, here is the current Q and A on the Twins site which addresses this issue and others....

I think it comes down to how bad they want to win a world series as opposed to just qualifying for the playoffs with a wild card or maybe a division title if it's a down year in the division like this year. They can potentially do the second option with what they have but I really think that to seriously contend for ws they need a rh 3b that can get rbi's and 20+ home runs. Nobody on the team right now fits that mold. And that includes Cuddyer even if he could play 3b.

Listening to him in the morning on WCCO, he seems like the worlds grumpiest old man

It's fun listening to him and then when he is done moving over to Ruesse. I knew where I have to be on the way to work when they come on.

Don't be surprised if the twins deal a pitcher to Milwaukee for JJ Hardy. If that happens, they might be happy with the Buscher-Harris platoon at third. The Twins have more guys in the bullpen than they need and have a projected solid rotation.

Elsewise, Blake might be a good option for a two-year deal. He still lives in Iowa and likely would like to play close to home as he edges in on retirement. And he could be a deadline trade candidate, too, should the other guys improve dramatically.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
