Hunted South Dakota the last 2 weekends, what a difference a week makes. First weekend hunted in T-Shirt, 2nd weekend hunted with 2 jackets! Was pretty selective and only shot drakes, but it was unreal the amount of birds we saw and shot. I even got the opportunity to get a nice bull can like I was hoping. Layout huntings was first time experience and a great time.

Flowage:

What part of Sodak were you in...I assume it wasn't NE. I hunt there, but you can only get a 3-day license. The state would make a ton of money if they let non-residents hunt more there.

WV. Thanks it was alot of fun. Yeah its disappointing they only let a select few hunters in, because the birds out there are thick. We were hunting East Central South Dakota, but you can pretty much pull into any field or slough and shoot a limit. I was very selective and kind of trophy hunted ducks which is a definite change from MN. Could have limited out in 15 minutes every day if I shot the first 5 that came in. Everything out there froze up on our last day so the duck hunting will be hard from here on out. I would recommend making a trip, not much $$ compared to driving around MN looking for ducks.

I thought Cans were closed this year or is it only wisconsin?

Nice bag of ducks though.

I had to look that up as well as my thoughts were similar to yours.

1 Canvasback can be apart of your bag limit in SoDak this year. They are closed in MN too.

We always get the shaft here in Minnesota. I know this is a different topic entirely but it seams pointless to close shooting of cans in MN when you can shoot them in the neighboring states. I'll never understand the intentions behind our regulations. frown

We've seen more here in Wisconsin this year than we have seen in the past. Oh well I just wish I can get a day like that over here crazy

I know what you mean hanson, I've had more friends telling me about having to pass up on those bulls than I've ever heard of people seeing them here before. Just doesn't make sense.

Am I also correct in that MN got the shaft this year in that in WI & IA you can now shoot 3 woodducks, but MN is only 2? I know its off topic, but kinda amazing how things can be so different accross a river.

Yeah its tough to stomach watching a bull can land in the dekes here in MN. The reason they are open in South Dakota is because that is a different flyway, the Central which was allowed by the Feds, and they adopted the "hunters choice" which means you can only shoot 5 ducks and included in that limit you can only shoot 1 hen mallard OR 1 canvasback OR one pintail. I agree that only being able to shoot 2 wood ducks early in the year when that is all that is around sucks, especially when they leave 2 weeks into the year for Iowa and other southern states where they can shoot 3 of our home-grown woodies.

Don't get too uptight about the can thing. Remember last year we could shoot 2 a day and the other states mentioned could only take 1. People in Nodak and Sodak were probably saying the same thing about our states regs as hundreds of cans bombed through their decoy spreads. The Can season will likely be closed across the US next year anyway unless something miraculous happens and who knows how long it will be before we can shoot them again, anywhere. I agree these regs don't make much sense because of their inconsistencies from state to state as these are migratory birds and they do migrate between states and even flyways for that matter.

Had some decent luck on mallards again this weeekend, although not as good as last weeekend. Migration is definitely winding down in our area.

I stopped the waterfowl scene quite some time ago only to start up again with my son this Fall.

I've really enjoyed the pictures in this thread. Just wanted to say thanks.

Frank,

I have as well. I love waterfowling but have no interest killing birds anymore. I have a boy that will most likely want to do it and I will get back into it then. I do enjoy following the season and looking at these photos. Thanks fellas

Good to hear that you have/will be getting those kids out in the duck blind! Next to me in that first picture is my dad and I still remember the first day I went with him on a hunt. I was just about in tears begging him to let me go with him. That was in the early 90's when the duck numbers were way down and I know we didn't even see a single duck that day but I didn't care. I cherish every single hunt I get to share with him.

P.S. Dad, if you're reading this, mom should blame you that I'm addicted to waterfowling because you started it all from the very beginning!!! gringrin

Nice hunt! I always love it when you get a variety of fowl instead of the same ol same ol duck all the time.

Not me, I'd rather shoot all Mallards. Their the best tasting, and funnest to shoot (Not just flying by or swinging your decoys) IMO

Mallards are so much fun when they bomb in from sky high locked up and committed! Divers are fun to shoot at when I get the chance at em

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
