Just wondering what your guys' opinion was. The question i have is how long do you believe it take for the walleyes to start moving shallow when the weather turns warm. If it is warm for 2-3 days do you think this will trigger them to move to the shallows. Any knowledge of this would be a great help and a little bit more understanding on what the fish do up there on the big pond. thanks tim
[This message has been edited by sheepheadslayer (edited 03-06-2003).]

I would tend to think it is more related to the increased amount of daylight then the warming of the weather. How can the warming of the weather effect water temperature of a ice capped lake?
I would look for the action to be fast and furious in the shallows the last couple of weeks of March - Mid april.
Looks like we may still have ice on the May opener the way things are going... it is suppose to be in the -15 -20 range again this weekend.

Widetrack: I'm headed back again two weeks from today. That's the same basic time period as last year and the fishing was good. Sauger out deep and the eyes were going in the shallows. Hoping for the same the time as well. Is your son's hockey season now over? What age level is he at? Good luck and hang on. Bill

Photoperiod, daylength, whatever you wanna call it, I'm in agreement this influences their movements more than the temps late winter/early spring.
Fisky

Hey Bill:
I would think by the 20th when you are coming, that would be about when fishing should really be going again.
My boy has one more tournament the weekend of the 15th. Then that is all for the year... He is 9yrs old, and in the squirt program in Roseau.

I appreciate the response. Down where i am from (mankato area) a if a warm or cold front moves in it affects the fishing but we are also talking about 1500 acre lakes or smaller most of the time. It sounds like when i am coming up 15-20 of march it should be pretty good. 5 days of straight fishing. can't beat that. We are staying out at Arnesons for the 6 year we always fish the gull rock twin area and do pretty well. Wondering what other areas can be reached from bablers road that are pretty hot this time of year. thanks again

SH:
Fronts will still affect fishing on LOW also.
It was just the major migration to the shallows I was refering to, that I believe the amount of daylight affects.

Almost 12 hours of daylight each day now.
up from 8 in December. Natures telling
fish to move and get ready for the boy-girl
party.
Bturck was at Riverbend a couple weeks ago
and they were already moving houses in to
shallower water.
By the way, the weatherman PROMISES much
warmer weather by mid week next week and
maybe a big rain.......jeez. We'll see
what happens
Curt Quesnell

hey sheepheadslayer! we are going to be up at arnessons that same time you are. we are from sleepy eye.will be renting the house called the driftwood.if you see us around or want to stop in and see how we did, feel free. maybe we can compare notes.we will also be on the radios on chanel 7/11.

hey humpback it sounds like good weather so that will be a plus. I think we stayed in the driftwood a few years back. Are you gonna be in there house or are you on your own. We have always gone on are own to be more mobile and usually catch alot more fish. we prolly will see you in the cleaning shack or in the bar. There will be eight of us and we are all younger guys (mid twentys) so we will prolly spend our share of time in the bar like usual. Good luck to you.

sheepheadslayer! we should hook up for sure sometime up there and compare notes. we as well will be very mobil.i think right now we have 6 guys comming up all of us between mid 20s and early 30s.should be a fun time and i think some booze will flow with some of these guys.where do you guys plan to fish? we have 3 portables with 3 sleds so we split up in 2 man teams and keep in contact on radios so we know who is catching what, where and when, that way if someone gets into alot of good fish we all move to that house. it works really well cuz it only takes us minutes to tear down, move and set back up again.so if you see someone playing musical fish house, that will be us.if you have radios bring them with or barrow some and you can play the game with us if you want.we should be up to the driftwood around noon on the 16th so we will probably see you in the fish cleaning shack or the bar that night.
