So I am looking to get some rod holders for the boat. I am pretty much going to fish tonka, and will primarily use them when bobber fishing for Walleye, trolling for walleye and trolling for Muskie. Do you need a difft one if you are going to use a spinning reel vs a baitcaster or can you use the same for both.

Am looking at Cabelas and they have the Cabela's QuickDraw Round Flush-Mount Rod Holders with 360HT, now I do not know what the Quickdraw or 360HT features are on this but Cabelas loves em.

Na, I use the same all the time. I had some Scotties that came with the boat but have added the generic ones from Fleet Farm that are two for $16 and they work just fine.

DownEast is another Rod holder the Muskie guys swear by... again spendy but very good.

Got some freebie Roberts (Attwood) rod holders that came with our dock. Works equally well for spinning or bait casting reels. Honestly you will not catch more fish with one more than the other. But I do admit I like the look of the flush mount rod holders.

Flush mount would not work on my new Lund, but the Roberts look quite nice on the Lund Sport-track brackets.

I use the cheap one also. Have caught everything from northerns to coho on them with no problems. The cool thing with the cheap ones if you loose one you are not out alot of $$$. They don't fit spinning reals as well as they hold trolling rods, but it sure beats holding on when you are busy unhooking MONSTERS!

I like Tempress Fish-On rodholders, have used them for years.

I've never used the Quick-Draw ones you're talking about but have heard some guys ocmplain about them.

Are you referring to the Folbes? They do take a bit to get used to and stick a little when new, but once you get used to them and wear them in, they rock.

I bought the cabela's 360 swivels and have enjoyed them a lot. I use them for anything from trollin' for skis, to cattin'. They've taken quite a beating and have held up nicely. I recommend getting a set that you mount inside your boat and not to the gunwhale. Some of those have been known to come loose on a big strike. I figure, if I am using good equipment i've worked hard for....I might as well buy good rod holders that I can trust instead of saving a few bucks and risk losing a setup. Mine were around 18 bucks? I suggest getting your hands on any model you intend on buying and see how it works for what you intend on fishing for. Those quick-draw's some of the other FMer's are referring to are pretty sweet. I have raised Ram 2000's on mine and love them. They aren't cheap but worth every penny IMO.

In order of preference:

Driftmaster

Ram

Scottys/Cabelas 360

The cheap ones will work but, seem to fall apart, or have the set screw strip, or just plain break.

I’ve tried the Folbe holders and they are kind of a pain to get your rod out, especially if you have a load on your rod (trolling cranks, fish running, etc).

The YarCraft 1895 Storm I purchased came with 4 Cabela's rod holders. Not the quick draw. Wally Louma (prev. owner) had good things to say about them when I asked.

My preference is Ram 2000 without a doubt.

The really "cheap" rod holders (like Rod Tenders) just aren't made with durable plastic. I installed some on my dad's little 14 footer for cattin' (because they were cheap) and I had 2 of them stripped out by the end of the day.

At the very, very least, I would install Ram bases. The plastic they are made out of is something else IMO. Very strong, very durable.

Most rod holders like Folbes, Cabelas, Scotty's, Rams etc have universal bases on them so they are interchangeable. You can put a Cabelas rod holder in a Ram mount base, etc...

One thing I love about Rams is how easy it is to remove the rod from the holder. You don't have to pull the rod butt all the way out of the "tube" like other rod holders. They are also specifically designed to hold both spinning reels and casting reels differently in the same rod holder.

Just a very well designed and practical product IMO.

I'll have to look at the Ram 2000's. If I can use the existing cabela's bases, I may pick up one for spinning reel, and one for casting reels.

Ordered up 2 of the ram 2000's today. Guess I didnt think they made rod holders. I got a bunch of other RAM stuff and all of it is top notch so I am hoping to be happy with these as well.

There is nothing worse than putting forth a bunch of time, effort and money on something like this only to find what you got was a piece of junk and you were better off without it.

Ya Hanson remember I live in Wi now. The land of 3 rod trolling. 3 rods X 3 guys = 9 rods and 1 extra to balance it all out. grin

Now if I put in the elevated rod holders that hold 3 rams a piece I could get in 18 rams. Add the same thing into the track system in the back and I could be runnin a woppin total of 24 but I cant fit that many guys in the boat. Sure would look impressive though. crazy

Used all 10 of mine on Lake Superior. What an awsome time that is. Fishing here in MN with three guys and three lines doesn't really have the thrill after three lines per guy. When they hook up on Coho's and Browns.. Man you just can't beat that feeling of absolute Mahem! When you have more fish coming in than nets or guys in the boat.. I really want to hit that lake again!!!

I agree with dtro on this, folbes are a pain to get your rod out at times. I been meaning to get some wax or something to butter them up so they release better. Two of mine work great most of the time, the others are sticky.

In all fairness, I do believe there is a trick to do it right, but IMO I just want to grab my rod and fight a fish. I don't want to learn a new technique to get my rod out of a holder.

Not only that, but then I have to worry about the people in my boat and try to teach them.

But I guess if you were to get the hang of it, it's probably the cat's meow.

To the OP, you are going to love those RAMS, good choice. cool

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
