Hello Folks,
Coming up this weekend, and looking for last minute advice. Fisky was very helpful for my last trip a couple of weeks ago.
I am thnking Gull Rock Reef, but not sure. I have read back through about 6 pages of posts and seen that spot a couple of times. Previous posts indicate that it gets less traffic than 12 or 16 mile. I'm bringing my father-in-law along who has a bad back, so 4 wheelers and snowmobiles are out or I would head toward knight/bridges.
Does anyone have coords for the top of GRR or an explanation of how to fish the reef. Maybe you have a better 4wd truck location to hit. I don't suppose there is anyway to drive out to Knight?? Anyway, any and all suggestions are welcome.
------------------
Good Luck!
Jeff Phelan
Fish On LLC
[email protected]

Fish:
This weekend will be my first ice fishing in a few weeks so I don't have any report.
I'm thinking I'll be in the 12,16 border area, and maybe give some shallow water evening fishing a try up in the bay somewhere.
Good luck.

Hey Jeff,
Is the duct tape on your auger still holding up? Hope so.
We did well at the end of Adrians Road last W/E. Maybe we'll see you out there?
Good luck!
Doug & Marilyn

Hey Doug,
Yeah it worked great for the weekend, thanks again. I took it back to Ardisam and they exchanged the auger shaft for a 10" chipper style. The 9" lazer cut like mad.gif .... well not good! They were pretty good about the exchange. Anyway, did we leave a cutting board in the Kitchenette #3?? confused.gif maybe in the cupboard? Shoot me an email when you get a chance and let me know where your house is out of Adrians. I like the sound of that because its closer.
Thanks Again,

------------------
Good Luck!
Jeff Phelan
Fish On LLC
[email protected]

I don't have #'s for Broken TRailer, but if one heads toward 16 on Babbler's road it will be on the right about 1-2 miles before 16. It is a ways past arneson's reef so you shouldn't have trouble confusing them.
I am thinkning about gong out there this weekend, but haven't made up my mind yet. I'm sure I'll get a call soon from someone saying that thay're coming up to fish this weekend.
Also am thinking about heading over toward the morris gap to fish shallow. I always have a good fealing about this area. I was thinking maybe 7-10 feet next to the current. There is open water on the S side of the breaker with a few perm houses. No one is next to the open water though.
A friend of mine has had his house on the river all year and has done allright. Last night he got five keepers with the biggest at 24". Just an FYI.
I'm a last minute decision maker and will decide where to fish come Sat morning prob. Good luck on whatever you decide. I do need to hit up URL for an evening bite yet! Who knows....

It's between 16 and Arneson's reef on your right. 1-2 miles south of 16.

Hogeye, I am staying on URL in a sleeper fri night, maybe sat night too, shoot me an email and I'll give you my cell # so I can tell you how we are doing (where and when on URL). If you're interested maybe we could a joint URL/LOW venture since you have LOW under control and I will have them scouted fri night for a sat outing.
Thanks for the broken trailer update.
------------------
Good Luck!
Jeff Phelan
Fish On LLC
[email protected]
[This message has been edited by fish_on_llc (edited 03-05-2003).]

Sounds like a fun idea. Do you know if there are any sleepers avail. on Red. My girlfriend is 7 months pregnant and I think that's the only way I can get her to join me. It sound like it could be interesting! If it turns out I'm not having company this weekend it could be a go. Work day is over , so I'll be on FM later when I get home. Later!

i was wondering if some one would care to give me the cords to 12, 16, and arnnesons reefs. it would be greatly appreciated or at least get me somewhat close. thanks.

Hogeye,
I have two sleepers out of Hillmans friday night and one for Sat night. A couple of the crew are sick and highjly unlikely so if you are interested in one for fri night email and I can confirm the availability. We are very interested in hooking up Sat to fish LOW as well.

------------------
Good Luck!
Jeff Phelan
Fish On LLC
[email protected]

I would prob be interedted in the sleeper. I sent you an email. I have some options for LOW as well.

If widetrack or hogeye are unavailable (or understandably tired of posting the same things) does any one else have any input??
I have fished the big pond a grand total of two times now and see the potential for the great fishing. This weekend will be the first time I won't be catering to a bunch of people, and I'd like to experience first hand what seems readily available and yet elusive to me to this point... quality fishing with a shot at a big fish.
Again, any and all advice welcome
Thanks!

------------------
Good Luck!
Jeff Phelan
Fish On LLC
[email protected]

I haven't fished the GRR so I can't provide the coords. I haven't been fishing for awhile so I can't say how they have been doing in the area(I have been visiting family in other parts of the state). I am thinking about going out this wekend. Two weekends ago I tried several spots out of Babbler's and had my best luck off of 12. I would have to say with the weather that the fish will be deep still. The east edge of 12 has been good to me on several occasions this year. I wouldn't be afraid to hit Broken Trailer reef either which is S of 16 mile reef. This "reef" has been producing all year. Whatever you decide, don't let it be your final decision. Try another spot if they are not biting.

Thanks Hogeye, do you have #'s for Broken Trailer. I saw a lot of discussion a week ago about it but never specifics. I'll have to keep an eye out for the white blazer grin.gif .
Can you drive to knight or is that still a no go with a 4wd truck?? If I do run into the evasive white rig I'll have to buy you a beer!
Thanks Again,

------------------
Good Luck!
Jeff Phelan
Fish On LLC
[email protected]

You called for it. The north wind blew strong today. The ice was disappearing fast. Pictures below are from 4:30pm and 8:20pm. Just a small sheet of ice left in the south-east bay. Should be gone by tomorrow. Think I will put the boats in the water tomorrow. I have never eaten smelt before. Will be interesting to see how I like them. I'm waiting for the call to help clean them. Have never done that before either. Need not be present at the smelt fry to win, unless you want to make sure I don't lose your $2,500. Drawing will take place live online on May 18th.

On the South Shore... The focus along the south shore is watching the ice disappear from back bays, big pike sliding into the bays and ditches for the spawn and of course ice out on the main lake (Big Traverse Bay). From now until the Minnesota Fishing Opener on May 10th, anglers will be targeting northern pike (and sturgeon on the Rainy River). Ditches are running and shallow bays are starting to pop open. Now is the time when the big pike are moving in, staging for the upcoming spawn. This is a great spring fishing opportunity not available in most parts of the state. Various techniques for spring pike are effective. A dead bait under a bobber, casting spoons or trolling shallow crankbaits all can be effective. However you fish, shallow bays along the south shore such as Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are a prime spot to hook into a true trophy. The pike limit on the Minnesota side of Lake of the Woods is three fish per day. All pike between 30 and 40 inches must be released, but one pike over 40 inches can be kept. Many anglers choose to take measurements and photos, release their fish, and order a replica mount to remember the catch. All great options! On the Rainy River... Now that walleye season is closed, sturgeon fishing is in full swing and the bite is very good. Anglers are catching solid numbers of these prehistoric giants. Some of the feeder creeks have opened up, increasing the current. That added flow has lowered visibility of the water a bit, but sturgeon primarily feed by scent, so fishing has not been affected. Most anglers are using 4 to 6-ounce no roll sinkers with their sturgeon rigs to stay on the bottom in the heavier current. A typical sturgeon rig includes an 18-inch leader, a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook, and baited with nightcrawlers, or crawlers paired with frozen emerald shiners. Local bait shops and resorts are well-stocked with everything you’ll need. The sturgeon season is open through May 15th. Here are the upcoming dates to keep in mind: Catch and Release Season: May 8 – May 15, and again October 1 – April 23. Harvest Season: April 24 – May 7, and July 1 – September 30. Closed Season: May 16 – June 30. Up at the Northwest Angle... Progress is being made with more and more open water this week. Other than some local airboats, travel on the ice is pretty much done. The focus is on the upcoming open water season. Resorts and area guides are already preparing. Based on the ice fishing season, expectations for fishing success naturally are high. Lake of the Woods is healthy. Now’s the time to plan your spring or summer fishing trip!

Most medium sized lakes around grand rapids went ice free today. Closer to bigfork they still have ice pulled away from shore. Turtle by Marcell is still pretty covered but that's a big deep lake

hookmaster.....our cabin is 7 miles west of talmoon. what lake would that be???? there's a fella on another site many may know, is a dr. posted some small lakes in the area opened up completely last week.......he's between and rapids and Marcell. that white is a good possibility the top is is nothing more then very honeycombed ice. i've been watching several webcams up there 1 being on bowstring and that ice is moving away from shore more everyday. that ice turned from very dark to whiteish also!!!!

I was out in a boat on Minnetonka on March 28th. Only a handful of bays were ice free. That lake maxed out at ~24" of ice this winter where I fished. Talked to a friend in the Grand Rapids area and he said the lake where his parent's cabin is near Talmoon is still white and not pulling away from shore yet, and the cabin is on the east side!!

Blow you son-a-batch blow! We need wind now! 🤣 Oh, how do they make their Smelt, I like um really crunchy! Maybe I'll swing by for some smelt when I pick up my $2,500! 😎 🤭

So, your saying I an't gona win! 🤣

26 inches of ice still? Man, that's ridiculous. The lakes have been open by me since April 1. It's amazing how much of a difference there can be just a few hours away.
