NO one fishes Buffalo Bay ....hmmmmmLOL

Posted

Was at Buffalo Bay on friday. Started fishing
at 8am. Picked up a couple jack's and one walleye 26inches at 4pm. At about 5pm the
action really picked up, but walleyes were very small. Two weeks before caught nice
walleyes and big jacks. A couple in the 40+
inch range.Very nice females. This time all
male jack's.Wondering if the females are heading for the shallow pre-spawn areas.
I was fishing on a bar 17ft depth.Would also
like a litle info.

was there last wed-sun, caught many smaller (26-35")northern, and did fairly well on eyes in the evenings before the front moved in fri pm, although many 6-7"ers, Ive never caught so many small fish in BB and have fished this time of year for the last 4 years and have done very well.
my thinking is that the 1 over 30" jack rule in Mb. is part of the problem, lots of people are taking the 35+"ers home.
I think in 2 weeks if the weather warms you'll do fine.
we caught northerns in 5-8' and the eyes in 12'. good luck and lets here a report..Eh?
[This message has been edited by minneman (edited 03-04-2003).]

THanks guys! You WILL hear a report upon my return.
We target everything up there from jumbos to Jacks! Plus this year the pout might even get on the list!lol
ANother question. How much snow is on the ice? Can a 4 x 4 make it around ok?
I heard rumor that the heaves are unusually large this year and almost if not impossible to cross unles you have sleds??
Thanks again gentleman!!!
Keep the rods bendin'!!!
Jim W

Jim W.
I'll be heading up on Thursday, for the weekend. I'll give a report when I return. Have been fishing the "Bay" a fair amount this winter, just not the past couple of weeks. The fishing has been quite good. Pressure ridges don't seem to be out of the ordinary this year.

Jim W.
I will keep in touch and post a report upon my return. The reports on "the spot" from last year are correct. Actually, this is the best year that I've ever had, for size, in that particular location. Did go out to the north tip of the bar for some Jumbo action and did quite well the last time I was there. I hear that it's been quite consistent since then.

fyi..we were checked by the MBnr and he said the sand bar had shut off about 2 weeks pryor to our arrival, the day he checked us he said out of all the people,(many) only 7 eyes and 2 perch kept. and that its been like that for a while. we didnt go out there at all.
But probably wood have if Gillraker would have enlightened me on the whereabouts of those weedbeds..J/K

oh yea, you can drive anywhere(4-6"+drifts). there is a breaker from stony to gould but they were crossing somwhere midway by the way it looked from our perspective.

Hey Jim,
We are heading up there for a 3 day run 14th - 16th, if you haven't been up there yet let me know and I'll send a report your way. There's about 9 of us going, we've had a house on the 'bar' since Dec. but lots of small Pike now but the Perch are there and the Walleyes seem to be day to day. We're going to do some runnin' and gunnin' if we have to.
Not sure where your staying and how your getting on the lake but you can drive around with a 4x4 truck. The ice is the THICKEST I've seen it in years, make sure you have an extension with, maybe 2 if it keeps up with this -30 [PoorWordUsage].
Mike
frozenbait

Hey Gillraker!!
Good to hear from ya! I was wondering if you were going to bless me with some good info!!!
I heard rumor of a decent jumbo bite going on?
I guess the main info for me will be snow cover, pressure ridge/driving out info. Of course we plan on trying that spot again that you gave us last year! I have heard reports of large walleye in the evening there!
Keep in touch and I look forward to your report!
Jim W

Minneman and MN Mike,
Thanks for the info guys!!!! Truly appreciate it!!!
Mike, I will be on the ice the 19th! SO a report would be very timely!!!
Keep the rods bendin'!!!
Jim W

Minneman,
Sorry about the weedbed coordinates, I guess I lost it someplace along the way. Will you be heading up there (again) anytime soon? If so, I'll get the data to you.

I plan to do it again before season closes. that would be great if you could get them to me!! [email protected] I might have a spot for you too!
[This message has been edited by minneman (edited 03-07-2003).]

Hey Gillraker,
if your willing to cough up some coordinates, I am sure we could do some exchanging?
Jim W

Fishing started off average and ended with a bang. Found an isolated pocket of extremely active fish (after moving around a few times). The old rule of finding a "spot within a spot" came into play this weekend. Getting around on the ice was not a problem, a few breakers in the normal spots, not enough snow to make it difficult....yet. Sounds like a major warm up for the weekend, will be nice to get out of the cold!

Posted

Gillraker,
When you mention not much trouble getting around on the ice, are you referring to trucks , sleds...?
We are hoping to drive more this year instead of sledding.
Plus, do you have an e-mail address I can reach you at?
Thanks for the report!!!! ANy pigs?
Jim W

Posted

Jim W.
All by trucks. The last time that I posted my e-mail, I ended up paying for it....my fingers were raw from responding! If you want to post yours...I will respond to it. Did get some nice fish..several 'Eyes in the 2-4# range (largest about 6#). Landed 3 pike over 41", along with several smaller, and lost a monster!

Gillraker,

I'm only going to keep it up a while.
Jim W
Thanks for getting back to me!!!!
[This message has been edited by Jim W (edited 03-10-2003).]

Jim,
I was looking back thru the posts on this topic and can say everything is still about the same. Lots of people all over the bay last weekend, we fished the sandbar and did well. Pike bit all day and so did the walleyes but the walleyes would pick up nicely after 4 or so and bit right up til dark, seemed that gold was the color of choice, wouldn't hurt to have some white with too.
Didn't get over to Reed any but some of the guys talked to a few fishermen that were there and said that the a.m. was better on Sat. I don't know what happened Sunday, maybe someone else here would know. I counted over 20 vehicles coming off the lake at one time on Saturday nite after dark, must have been either at Reed or Gould.
Ice seemed to run about 44 inches, breakers were on the move and it wouldn't hurt to maybe have some planks with, never know.
Not 1 perch this weekend, they were all over the place a few weeks ago.
Good luck ...
------------------
FrozenBait

Thanks a ton!
Hopefully things will stabalize some. We will be on the ice tomorrow afternoon, hopefully avoiding some of the crowd action!
Keep the rods bendin!!!!
Jim W

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"? 😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄 As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless. Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky. BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.

Not sure where on the lake you are located, but Paul Bunyan Communications will be extending fiber optic internet for most of the south shore of the lake in the next couple years. If you’re in Beatty township like me, unfortunately we have been snubbed from the expansion.

Our home, Casa De Miel, is in a quiet 1 street gated family neighborhood. With 3 bedrooms - 2 featuring en suite baths. The 3rd room with a beautiful new double queen bunkbed adjacent to the hallway half bath is perfect for kids. That bunkbed is made from the local protected Guanacaste wood, only dead harvested and available there, it is beautiful. All the wood and tile work is pretty cool - we couldn't afford those materials and workmanship here!!. The master has a spacious walk-in closet, and the bunkroom/office has an entire closet wall with safe. With the pool, internet, multiple big screens, an outdoor shower and lovely Casita with a roofed patio, it is perfect for multi-generational families, fishing expeditions, etc. Sleeping capacity is 8. Everything you need is there, and new, from beach and pool toys, PFDs, to quality kitchenware. Serving ware is patio safe, but the wine glasses are glass, so deploy the unbreakable stuff for the 3rd bottle or so. Our property managers are incredibly thoughtful and professional Americans, rated Superhosts on AirBNB. They check you in and are always available. The same crew thoroughly cleans and maintains the exterior landscaping after each visit, and are available additionally if you like for extended stays. Our property managers own their business and are the best - concierge level extra attention is easily arranged. The house is less than a mile to the closest town beach and about 2 miles to another beautiful beach featuring a fantastic beach restaurant. The fishing is great and as a flyfishing guide myself I can recommend thoroughly vetted captains to take you out with conventional tackle. There are kayak guides also. Shore fishing is great anywhere smart. Trout a couple hours uphill. There are local and top notch international grocery and retail stores. The famous 'Monkey Farm' (a unique recovery and animal rescue center with tours, beach horseback rides, etc.) is right there. Many excellent bars and restaurants. Moped and motorcycle, bike, golf cart, scooter and Ebike rentals are easy and about a half mile mile away towards the town center. Kayak, other water toys at the beaches. Surfing and surf lessons are available easily and depart from town beach, as well as whale watching and scenic coastline cruises - smart to research and if you choose, book ahead. We are a little over an hour to a beautiful National Park with hot springs, tours and zips lines, etc. The world famous Lake Arenal area with the volcano and hot springs is a little further, but a very easy day trip. Pricing is flexible but I had to put something in there, so I listed the average daily price. We prefer at least a 3 night rental. Pricing is dependent on your dates, and starts around $220/night - I can send a link with up to the minute pricing. Monthly and longer rentals offer significant discounts. The quiet season is beginning so it is a great time to visit! I have a rustic trout shack on the Madison, and drift rivers for smallies and muskies here in MN, WI, etc. It would be great to meet new fishing buddies through this rental. Maybe we can follow thru for some floats when our calendars line up, or otherwise share/swap resources or fishing opportunities! The property managers currently block out the calendar further than 6 months ahead. Any forum members can contact me and I will facilitate advance bookings. Feel free to email me if you have questions, here's the booking link. Thanks, Pura Vida - Vida de Tiron!

Well since I'm all over this state during the year. Your either not in Minnesota, or your on a Hugh chunk of private land backed up to a state park or wildlife refugee! 🤭

When I was deer hunting last fall, the obvious explosion of wildlife then was evident then too. I saw over 50 deer, 20+ turkeys, and too many pheasants to count in a week. Nothing has changed. These mild fake winters have to be playing a big role in survival. And if we get another good reproductive cycle in June, I would expect another booming fall season.
