Looked back on previous posts and couldn't any information about using extensions.
I'm sure you guys are at least using one extension if not two correct? Coming up in April and probably will still need at least one...huh?

I think by April you'll be okay with one extension... We are heading up this weekend and all reports I've heard are that 1 extension will get through, but just barely... I only have 1, so I hope it is okay... I wouldn't expect it to get a whole lot thicker than it is now... by April it should be warming up and you'll be fine.
If anyone has a recent report on ice thickness I'd be interested as well... Will one 12" extension still be enough?

We're getting through with 1 extension even in the permanent where it's tough to get clear down to ice. You should be ok.
Good luck!
Doug & Marilyn

I was out off South Buffalo Pt. on the west side the other day and measured 38" of ice. It sounds like there is more ice over by Pine Island but I haven't been there for a while so I can't help there. I think at least a 12" extension would be prudent.
hope this helps,
toddb

I have a 20" extension on my lazer and it beats bolting on 2 12"er's. I don't know if Jiffy makes anything but a 12".
hope this helps,
toddb

Last time I was out there I was in a permanent house and had an extension on. It just barely made it. I only had my dipper to measure thickness, but it had to be 36". We were near Long Point. I am going up this weekend and I'm debating about trying to find another extension. I would say if you only had a portable that one extension should be fine. It's just the floor in the permanent, plus the blocking. It's probably a foot off the ice. So bring extensions.

About 1/2 way down a 12" extension on a 42" auger near pine island, and about 1/4 way down in the gull rock arneson's reef area as of this past weekend

I am going to be fishing off Bablers road on Wednesday with a portable. Will an auger with one extension be enough. It should cut thru 47 inches of ice.

I am not sure where Bablers is but I fished out of Adrians about 5-8 miles out from the island and I was able to get through with one 12" extension. I have an 8" Lazer mag express. Just one suggestion though, try to clean out as much chippings/shavings from the hole as you get close to the bottom. That way when you break through the ice and and water comes up, it doesn't freeze your drill in the hole like mine did on Saturday. That sucked.
Good luck!
I ditto that last comment by Ya Hey Der I did the same thing and it took me 20 minutes to get that auger out. That big time sucked! Bent my handle and auger up!

You guys just answered the question I had about extensions. Never had my auger freeze in yet. I have always pulled it up a couple of times to clear the chips. I didn't realize it could freeze that fast. Been out in some low temps too. Man, if you didn't have a spud you could be in deep ....!

Will one 12" extension still do the trick? We are coming up next weekend to LOW & URL and would like to know if we need to purchase a second extension? Any info. would be appreciated.
Good Fishing

Just got back from LOW. We were out of Springsteel. As long as it doesn't get cold again one 12" extension will get through, but you will go right down to the bottom of your auger. There was probably 45 inches out there. Nice thing is you can drive all over the lake in a 4x4 without much to worry about. We didnt see any pressure ridges up to 8 miles out.

Ole and Hanson,
Our plan is to bring a couple of portables and 2 augers so we can be mobile on LOTW and we want to head over to URL for some slabs. I spoke with Tom @ Randall's and he is saying the pressure ridges aren't allowing people to get out to his houses by truck. We plan to call Thursday and get the latest information. I think we are pretty set on bringing up our gear and doing whatever it takes to bag some limits. We are bringing a Strikemaster with a 12" extension and a Jiffy with a 12" ext. If that doesn't work we might have to [PoorWordUsage] down the holes. Have a good one.
HawkEYE

Hey Hawkeye1,
Here's what I noticed with extensions this weekend. We were a little west of Twin Islands so we were pretty close to shore.
My Strikemaster with 1 12" extension made it through but it was close on a couple holes. We saw a couple guys with Jiffy's & 1 12" extension not make it through. The auger on a Jiffy is about 3-4" or so shorter than a Strikemaster. The guys with the Jiffy moved 30-40 yards, tried again, and made it through. Ice thickness varied a little bit in this area.
Further out into the lake on Babblers Rd, just past Gull Rock, you'd have no problem with either auger and an extension.

Hawkeye,
Are you brinning portables to your sleeper? They will have the holes drilled for you. I didn't think you could bring your own auger, and re-drill the holes they have drilled? Please find out and let me know, so I can bring my 10" Jiffy if they will alow it.
Thanks
Ole

There’s critters out and about. Get yourself some cellular trail cams and you’ll see.

It wouldn't be the first time I've heard the USS Skunked Again breaking ice! I left this morning, the rain really did a number to the ice. I'll bet the Partridge River will be open by the weekend.

My yard is pretty open, but narrow. I think I'll be fine with reception in the areas I'm thinking. I try to keep the hill somewhat natural, but my wife wants to see the lake better. The video's I've watched, they have topped the trees and mounted the dish. I would this the swaying would affect the signal. Does Starlink help you with using WiFi for calling? My T-Mobile service sux at the cabin. Did you bury your cable?

I'm on the wide part of the channel going in to Black Bay. We won't see Paul B. For years.

Welcome back. Wow it's been since 2018 it looks like. Did you ever "I'm tightening up my footprint and want to build on my Bozeman lot on the Gallatin"? 😏

You're probably right. This isn't official since I've already lost, but I'll make my supplemental guess for May 6th since it's still open. 😄 As long as I can snake my way along the shore and/or plow through some dark ice on the 8th, I'll be happy. I love aluminum boats!

For all of my "problems" with getting a clear signal it's worth it. I can spend more time at the lake because I can work during the day and play or get things done at night. Toss in that I can record and watch a football/hockey/basketball game when I'm done at the end of the day....priceless. Like your place, our property is more natural and I was worried about having to cut down a bunch of trees. I like that people have to get up close to see our place from the lake through the trees. Luckily I didn't have to do much to get enough a signal that works for me. If I needed to be on video calls, I probably would run the dish down to the shore to get a better view of the sky. BTW - the main problem with mounting the dish on a tree is that the tree still has a canopy that will block the signal. The best option would be to top a tree and then mount it on the clear-cut top.
