That Young swings at the first pitch EVERY time? There was a game about a week ago where the pitcher had thrown something like 11 consecutive balls in a row and could not throw a strike to save his life.....until Young stepped to the plate. First pitch he pops out to the shortstop. I would like to see some statistics on how many pitches he has even seen this year!

Delmon Young delivered one of the four straight two-out singles in the third as part of a 3-for-4 day at the plate. He had one RBI and scored a run in the fifth inning when Nick Punto singled to left. .284 average....not that bad,

He's hitting well. I really don't care if there's not much power behind that swing. As long as he's driving in a few runs.

yep Delmon batting .284 last year as a rookie hit .288

Cuddyer is a career .269 hitter whose highest yearly avg was .284

Young is a free swinger no doubt and does indeed swing at the first pitch more often than not. He is hitting the ball well right now, so I won't complain. I seem to remember another Twin who used to swing at the first pitch often and was also a free swinger...Kirby Puckett. In no way am I comparing their abilities, but it is not always a bad thing for players to swing at that first pitch. Vladamir Guerrero is another player who will swing at anything.

There goes Sled on another Cuddyer rant. Rather have Garza back than Young, and Monroe can play left. Monroe is part time and is 3rd on the team in HRs.

I remember seeing some list of batters who swing on the first pitch in %'s and Gomez/Young were in the top 5 and was around 40-50%, something like that. That was a few weeks ago.

Im not sayin that he hasnt been productive. It seems like he can hold his own at the plate now and then. Although, I have read a lot of "trade Young" or "send down young, let Kubel play" posts the day after he goes 0-4, and many "hes not that bad" posts after he goes 2 or 3-3.

Maybe its just me I guess but it just bothers me that he swings at the first pitch every single time. Think of all the advanced scouting that goes on, do you think a pitcher is going to throw him something decent to hit on the first pitch? Of course not, every pitcher that has half a brain has watched his last ten plate appearances before they start the series on video and start him off with a slider or curve low and away that he whiffs on 90% of the time, which puts him in the hole right away. If he would take a pitch now and then, he might even get something better to drive to the gap, or even over the fence! Or maybe even draw a walk now and then (which is really stretching it)

I guess maybe it doesnt matter to some guys such as Vlad who can handle a pitch in the dirt and park it 15 rows up into the left field bleachers, but I would hardly at this stage in the game compare him to an annual All-Star.

Garza has a bad attitude. I'm glad we don't have him anymore. I like the way our staff is set up anyway.

I don't remember when it was exactly, but I remember Garza ripped the Twins for "not taking care of his injury" or some garbage like that.

I completely understand Chuckster wanting to see Young take a few pitches, it would probably be good for him. It's like watching Mauer take the first pitch EVERY at bat. They always throw him a strike and you just want to see him crush the ball, but he never swings. I can't honestly complain about Mauer though, he's one of the best hitters in baseball. He must be doing something right.

Time will tell on how the Garza/Young trade pans out. Garza is pitching well for Tampa and Young is on par with his season from last year. They are both young players who will get better. Our starting rotation, sans Livan, is doing a pretty good job lately.

Bartlett has 11 errors this year already and his OBP is .299 (as of Thursday). We don't miss him.

See I don't understand why people think we would be better off with Bartlett. He may cover just a little more range than Harris does, but Harris is usually more consistent with routine plays and also a more consistent hitter.

Garza's own teammates dont like him

Yeah, you have to like someone to have them on your team. Guy has been pretty good this season- I sure wouldn't want his numbers because he's a jerk. Ty Cobb- NOONE liked him, but I think I woulda took him on my team, guy played pretty good baseball. Not every player in the Majors is going to have Kirby Pucketts personality and have everyone like him. And again, I would rather have him back and they can have Delmon Young, and I would put Monroe in left.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
