Record catch on White Bear Lake Sunday 6.22

So I was out with a buddy (Troy McLure) on White Bear Lake yesterday fishing for skies and eventually switching to bass. We had a couple fish follow up to the boat and Rob missed one on a figure 8. We switched it up to bass to take a little break and the big one hit. I was tossing a Strike King Red Eye Shad lipless crank over some weeds in about 4 feet of water. I was using my 6'-6" Diawa Heartland-X rod, my favorite of course mated up with a Shimano Curado 200B spooled with 30lb Spiderwire. When the fish hit, she immediately dove into the weeds and the fight was on. After a few minutes playing tug of war, she finally gave up and came to the boat covered in weeds. After I cleared all the weeds from the fish, I was absolutely blown away by the size of the fish. Check out the photo below.

She weighed in at a little under an ounce and stretched the tape to about an inch.

Craig, you wouldn't believe it. I had to take a nap after the battle, it wore me out.

You better not have kept that... someone should have called TIP on you.

I personally would have kept it because those small one's eat so much better then the big one's but that is a personal choice and I would respect your choice to release it. grin

For White Bear Lake that is a Dandy alright...that's about the most you can expect from those waters... laugh

She was released to be caught another day. It was hard to decide though, between the skin mount, a quick gulp, or the release, but I always told myself a record fish would be released no matter what. After a short revival, she swam away, giving me that familar shower as she kicked her tail off into the deep.

That was one of the biggest factors for the release. I knew I would catch flack for not hooking it in the mouth, kinda like the guys who caught Dottie in Dixon Lake Cali. Foul hooked can't qualify for a record, so I was alright with the release.

I'm not trying to start anything here but he is clearly holding that thing way out in front of him to distort the size in the pic. grin

Polar,

I am glad to see you are practicing CPR. You have some truly amazing pics of that beast. I know a few really good taxidermists who do some very good replica's. Let me know if you need a few phone numbers! LOL

What disgusts me the most is that you guys go and get on a good fish like this, and rather than enjoy this lake and what it can produce like I do, you come on these boards and tell the whole world!!! Heck, lets make it even better you even show the lure! I can even get the gps coordiants from that one ripple in the water behind you. Don't you guys realize that now everyone is gonna flock here, as if this lake doesn't get enough pressure. Now you have done it. I guess I will have to wait another 5 years to have a chance at a treasure like that. Thanks buddy, thanks alot.

Is there any chance you could post the gps coordinates so more of us could have a chance to land something like that.

If I had a nickel for everytime I've seen that picture! It's been e-mailed to me at least 20 times in the last few years, same fish different story - everything from LOW to Mille Lacs to Bennett Lake in Roseville. FOR THE RECORD: this fish was actually caught in a remote mountain lake in Norway by my friend John Johnson in 1986.

Yup, I agree. If you look closely enough at the picture you can clearly see that it's two different pictures married together to make it "look" like he caught that beast.

Where do you get those Raps? I know I want to go after beasts like that. Is there a way I can get out fishing with you soon so I can get on fish like that?

Actually, if you could somehow score that Box Fan in the free forum you could mount that beast on that. It would truely be the FM special.

I heard a rumor that CNN wants to offer you a million for the story rights about your record catch.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!
    • Brianf.
Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
