ZZZ Welcome, Spinnerbait in white, yellow and black. Also buzzbaits in the same colors. These work best during low light levels. Mid-day jig/pig combos work very will.

I always use a shallow diving fat rap in chart. or silver and blue. Always catch alot of bass and they seem to average alot bigger with the raps versus a spinner bait, although spinner baits woks awesome as well.

I have always had luck with silver colored lures their. the lake has so much structure fish your spots fast in the morning find some fish then go back and work the areas starting shallow and then deep I usually go back with a spinner bait then go to a dt10 then a jig or jiggin spoon for the deeper spots

Caught all our fish (crappies, bass and a couple bonus 8 inch 'gills) with an 1/8 ounce jig and either mr. twister or fuzzy grub slow drifting or trolling the weeds. Bass seemed to come on the deep edge while crappies and 'gills came in the weeds or on the inside edge.

Were you fishin the east or west basin? Where did you find the eyes? What bait? I got my eyes on a jig/gulp leech over a rock bottom island that topped out at 16'. Small 12"ers. No luck fishing the weed edges at 12-16'(eyes anyway). I mainly fish the east end.

We fished the west basin, but just as often I fish the east...equal opportunity predator here! We worked the weedlines, with cranks, haven't done as well casting jigs and bait. Even if you are fishing submerged humps, you will still most likely be fishing weeds. Keep that in mind. I didn't see a lot of action from the boats working the bottom...the clean bottom. I've fished Clearwater for 45 years and the summer pattern has always been weedline fish. Get to know your weeds and your micro structure. It is a difficult lake to fish well.

Sounds like you're the experienced guy for the lake. would you mind giving out a few pointers for some eyes and pike? my buddy and I are making an A.M trip out to the lake and it looks like there are plenty of places for hiding fish. My friend says he knows the lake "OK",I do trust him and all, but a couple of pointers would be great. What would be best for bait? Where to start? Thanks.

I don't have 45 years out there, but it's going on 20 anyway. H2O is absolutely right though when he's talkin bout the weeds. Been a bit slow out there lately though. Was out there on Monday eve. Dropped the camera down on one sunken island(this one is weedless though, only rock/rubble) and the eyes were thick between 15-20'. Wouldn't bite. Mostly small fish, 12-14". A few gills and northerns mixed in too. Saw guys doing some trolling with out any luck. I managed two pike and only one eye(that one came from the weeds). One of my best tactics out there is to keep the boat on the shallow side of the 8-13' weedlines, cast a crawler out over the drop off, let it settle all the way down(16-20') and then ease it back up through the weeds. A lindy set-up(3' or so) will work. Fish it slooow. I've even caught them bobber fishing smallish sucker minnows in the same type spots. Your buddy says he knows the lake ok, so go with it. You'll find the 8-20' dropoffs are quite typical around the lake. Just keep your eyes on your graph for differences in weed growth, and of course any types of "micro"(as H20 says)turns/bends/points/pockets. Fishin the weeds you never know what's going to hit. Oh ya, bring plenty of crawlers as the gills are in the same weeds. I have run into 8-9"ers often EARLY am. If it's calm you can see schools disturbing the surface. Have a panfish rig(light jig no bobber) ready to cast. Have fun.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
