I haven't fished the Faribault lakes since I was a kid, and now with 2 kids of my own plan to get them out in the boat Saturday on a lake vs. trying to find fish on the river... with snags, tangled lines, and bored kids.

Can anyone help me out with a lake where I can take the kids and catch some pan fish and hopefully some walleyes?

I don't need any super secret spots, and I know my wife will out fish me regardless, just would like to see the kids reel in more than a drowned worm or half dead minnow.

Thanks in advance,

Kory

Welcome to FM.

To keep the kids entertained, I'd hit up Kelly/Dudley. You wont have time to fish, you'll be taking little sunnies off their lines all day long. Nothing of real size, but will keep your kids entertained.

For size, (crappies) but not as many in numbers, try Mazaska or Roberds.

Thanks for the tip bunt2k!

I am hoping to get an early start, well early as you can get bringing 2 kids and the wife! Hopefully I can try a few lakes, fished the lakes around that area when I was younger. Another post said Shields will be busy with a tournament, so I figure try your suggestions and if nothing is happening hit Kelly Dudley in the afternoon.

Anyone know if Fox or French are good options?

I have never fished Fox.

French on a Saturday will have lots of boat traffic, and is not the greatest for 'kid' action.

I have 2 kids, 4 and 6 yrs old. They get bored pretty easy on French. I always bring along the coloring books and crayons, and maybe the uno cards.

Are you fishing Tetonka tuesday night next week?

And are you gonna prefish at all this weekend?

Maybe I'll see you out there, red Skeeter right?

I would also second kelly/dudley. I've taken my 2 and 4 yr old out there twice this summer and as stated, you won't get a chance to fish but it keeps the kids entertained. Mostly small but we've caught 4 monsters out there so far. I have em rigged up with ice jigs and worms. I've fished Fox quite a bit as well and have had a really tough time out there. Always mark plenty but can't ever get bit. Good luck. Now I just to figure where to go saturday with all the tourney's we are going to have busy lakes!!!!

Thanks again for all of the input! I plan on trying to stay of tournaments lakes by hitting Fox, Hunt, and Kelly-Dudley. We’ll be the family of 4 a tan & green Crestliner 1750 if anyone wants to ask how they are biting. Also will post a report of the action Sun. (if I'm not back out there) or Mon.

Happy fishin'

So how did you do? I ended up on French for the evening tubing and then night fishing. I caught a few little eyes, all 12 to 14" on Gulp Alive minnows with a white twister tail and a lead jig head.

Instead of Red Bull and break dancing on the bow of my boat, I chew on a Gulp! Alive Minnow before heading out.

Well we fished Fox until about 11:00, trolling motor controller crapped the bed right away so we dropped anchor relaxed and caught nothing.. We went to Hunt and fished on the weed lines and caught a few sunfish, kids went swimming and we finished out the day at Kelly Dudley. You were right, I didn't have time to fish but the kids had a blast. My son, 2 1/2, has never caught a fish before, when he got the 1st one out of the water and it spooked him and he threw the pole and all into the water! I was able to catch it before it sunk to the bottom, but I was laughing so hard I almost didn’t get it. All in all it was a good day, caught a few that we could have kept but threw them back for someone else.

Couldn't have asked for a better day with the family.

Thanks,

Kory

We did just the opposite, started at hunt and moved to fox and had a horrible day fishing. Should have laid off little the night before I guess. Glad you had fun on KD, I will be back shortly with my kids. It's almost more fun watching them!!! Speaking of things getting tossed into the lake, if ever find a neddlenose pliers and a pair of scissors in about 10' ft of water out there let me know, my 2 yr old tossed them in last time I was there. He sure thought that was fun.

Very low, probably 2 feet lower than last year at ice out.

what do they look like this spring?

I might have missed a guess, but here are the ones that I noted:   JerkinLips – March 27th, then April 7th Brianf. – March 28th Bobberwatcher – April…. MikeG3Boat – April 10th SkunkedAgain – early April, then April 21st   Definitely a tough year for guesses, as it seemed to be a no-brainer early ice out. Then it got cold and snowed again.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
