Sunburn! How to speed the recovery...

Hey Guys

Need so help and advice on this one.

Was out volunteering today for the KTTC Flood Relief Drive that happened today at all 3 HyVee Locations in Rochester. I was under a canopy most of the time and thought I was safe from good ol' mister sun. But looking at my arms tonight you think I boiled a lobster by thrusting my whole arm in the pot. Its not severe so no need to rush to the hospital or anything like that. I am a redhead so I have had my fair share of sunburns growing up.

I am looking info on what products you all have tried and like that will speed the recovery of a sunburn.

Any recommendations??

Thanks for the input,

I keep a bottle of aloe vera gel in the fridge. Rub that on and sit back in the A/C. ahhhhhhhh. I also pop a few aspirin before bedtime if it's real bad.

Take a vinegar bath, wrap yourself in a sheet and hit the sack! By morning the sting should be gone and rarely will it peal!

Dermoplast, red top on the can, about $8 buck a can but it is the ONLY stuff I use now after trying all the other tricks.

Do the vinegar thing. Show up tomorrow and I bet they won't ask you to volenteer again.

I have always used aloe and cold wash cloth. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Sounds funny but sunscreen works. Something they put in there not sure what but it really helps. Oh yah, and also helps before the burn. Hope it gets better soon, those nasty sunburns are something else!!

My wife sells this Daisy Blue stuff that comes in a spray. Daisy Blue is a line of all natural beauty products. Trust me, I am not just putting out free advertising. I was very skeptical of her selling this stuff as I thought it was a pyramid scheme but the more products I try (not very willingly mind you) the more I like it. The after sun spray is awesome. It has aloe vera in it along with peppermint to help cool your skin. I spent 14 hours out fishing two weekends ago without using any sunscreen. I should have been in much pain and peeling like crazy. I really felt no pain using this stuff and I did not peel. Check it out. You might be surprised.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I spent an hour tearing the bathroom apart looking for some Aloe Vera Gel last night only to have my wife tell me she threw it out cause the bottle was dusty from not being used. She figured I didn't used it anymore and got a little too excited with the spring cleaning...

Ended up using some moisturizing lotion that the wife had on hand. Not the greatest thing I ever used plus the cranberry/lotus blossom scent was a bit nauseating. They should really have some manly scents available.

Will try and find something better during my lunch hour today.

Thanks again for all the great suggestions...

Air,

Now you got me curious. How much vinegar do you add to the bath water. The aloe vera stuff was a no brainer. I had a choice of going with the green jelly stuff but chose the blue jelly stuff because it had a painkiller built in to relieve the sting of sunburn, pretty cool!

I knew I smelled something fruity wink.. I hope you don't catch heck at work smelling like that, I would ..I agree though, something with a little more manly smell would be awsome. I won't touch anything my wife has in the cupboard. I would use bug spray first.

I spent 8 days in the burn unit (long story but funny now) when they sent me home the gave me a cream that was called "Silvedine" (bad speller?) any way that stuff is great. My daughter rested her arm in a hot weber when she was 4. we put some on asap and she never even blistered. you can only get it through a doc. but if I ever burn sun or other wise bad I am going to beg for more!

Aloe Vera and drink a lot of water. Take a aspirin or 2 for pain if needed. If you are lucky enough to have some left over Silvadine that stuff is awesome.

Most important is to get out of the sun and drink a lot of water.

Drink plenty of water, aloe vera, and ibuprofen not aspirin because it reduces swelling and not just numb the pain.

Somebody told me that to help stop the burning process once out of the sun, you need to take a cold shower. Your skin will continue to burn for a while until the cold water is applied. I think they make aloe with a mild pain killer in them now. My grandma used to put noxema on me back when I was a kid when I got sunburned. Might be worth a try if there is some around.

well if you want the pain to go away you might want to endure pain for another 20 minutes; just rub vinegar on it, it will be burn like absolute crazy, but that will be the end of your sunburn problems.

My sister-in-law works at Shopko and gave me some Blue Aloe Vera gel that contained Lidocaine to put on my sunburn. It works pretty good. Must be working since I don't feel the sunburn generating any warmth anymore.

I'll have to remember the vinegar thing for next time. Sounds like a good treatment. Rochesterfest is coming up next week so I am sure I will be outside for that.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. Will put all into effect this summer, guaranteed!

Another vote for straight Alo. I buy the pure stuff at health food store that is inteneded to be ingested. I keep in fridge. Lasts years. It helps a lot but time is really the cure. The itchy stage of a bad sunburn is almost as bad as the burn!!!

Believe it or not rubbing a wet tea bag on the burns takes the sting out of sunburn - something about the tannic acid in the tea causes it. I've used vinergar too and it also works but tea doesn't leave you smelling like salad dressing.

LOL! Salad dressing. Mmmm...the tea bag idea is great, I'm going to have to try that out.

Just straight vinegar. You can start buy soaking a wash cloth and then dab on the skin. Its just easier/less mess to do in the bath. Keep the areas wet for a couple of minutes and do not rinse . Let it air dry. wrap yourself in a sheet and hit the sack.

HEre's a totally different take on it...

I was leading a group of boy scouts on a Florida Keys adventure for a week in the dead of summer, and we all had to start dealing with sunburn, no matter how much sunscreen we used, with all the snorkling and sweating we did.

The locals in the Keys all said don't bother with the aloe - go get a water-based "skin repair moisturizing lotion" with alpha-hydroxy or hydrocortisone, and pair it with drinking lots of water, together it rehydrates burning skin naturally fr4om the inside and outside at the same time, and take aspirin for exceptional pain, don't put it on your skin.

They said, if you start peeling, you aren't using enough water-based repair lotion or drinking enough water - they live by the "don't let it peel" rule to keep healthy skin for a lifetime. They believed that the aloe and painkiller topicals are some of the worst things you can do, because they are dehydrators and actually crisp your skin faster while they "fake" a cooler feel.

The vinegar works wonders, tho - acetic acid rehydrates your skin very fast, apply it whenever you want as often as you like. Once it dries onto your skin it doesn't smell that much at all. Its one of the best home remedies ever.

When we went on our cruise in the Caribbean, we stopped on an island that we took a guided fishing trip on. Obviously got a lot of talking time with the guides, and this is also what they told us. One of the guys would just tell us "Just rehydrate yourself in every way" - the captain went into more detail and said drink a lot of water, take a cold bath, and use water-based lotion.

I have a hard time not trusting the people who spend 90% of their year under that sun.

I thought that I remembered reading a statement years ago from the DNR, where they said it was unlikely that the rusty crayfish would be able to migrate from the east to west basins of Vermilion. It would be a shame if they have already. I'm sure that my wife and daughter will like swimming better with less weeds, but the fishing will suffer.

On the south end...  Some great fall walleye fishing this past week on Lake of the Woods.  September is a transition time, both for walleyes, bait, and what techniques they prefer.   Walleyes are being caught at many locations around the lake.  The north end continues to be producing a good number of eater walleyes with the mixed in trophy.  This part of the lake has been consistent all summer and now into the fall.   The south end of the lake is kicking out some nice limits as well, just have to find the fish.  Electronics help of course, but so does covering water.   The two techniques to cover water are spinners / crawlers and crankbaits.  Both are still producing fish.  The third common technique that is starting to kick in more and more every week as the water cools is jigging with a frozen emerald shiner.  Once you find the fish, this can be super effective.   Most fish are being caught in 18 - 32 feet, depending upon where you are fishing.  There can be a morning / evening bite along the shoreline areas which is worth exploring.  The shallower water can also light up during the day if bait is present.   Areas throughout the lake with rock hold nice numbers of smallmouth bass.  The south shore between Long Point and Morris Point has many scattered areas with rock as does the areas around Knight, Bridges and Garden Islands.   Saugers, big pike, jumbo perch and a few crappies in the mix of walleyes throughout a day of fishing.   On the Rainy River...   Some good fishing in the Rainy River right now.  Walleyes, saugers, pike, smallmouth bass, crappies, sturgeon, suckers and bullheads are all in the mix, depending upon what technique(s) you are using.     Walleyes continue to be caught in Four Mile Bay, along various shoreline breaks, bars and other pieces of structure up and down the river.  Trolling spinners and trolling crankbaits continues to be effective.  Many anglers are jigging key areas and success.  It will get even better as the waters continue to cool.      Pike and smallmouth bass are being caught casting shorelines, bays and areas with rock or structure.   Sturgeon activity is also getting better.  Fall sturgeon fishing is normally excellent.  The sturgeon season is open through the winter into the spring. Up at the NW Angle...  The NW Angle is putting out some nice fish.  Most anglers are targeting walleyes, but crappies and muskies are favorite species as well during the fall months.   Walleyes are hanging out on points, reefs, flats and neck down areas with current.  Good reports are coming from anglers using jigs, spinners and crankbaits.  Some anglers swear by a jig and plastic or minnow.  Others believe moving around with a spinner or crankbait is most productive.  All three methods are catching fish.   Crappies are being found in 20 - 30 feet off of points and around brush piles. Electronics helps to find the schools.   Casting shorelines this time of year will put a plethora of species in the boat and is very enjoyable.  Crankbaits, jigs, spinnerbaits, inline spinners and bladed jigs are all good lures to work shorelines. Muskies have been active.  Great reports as most muskie anglers fish just over the border from the Angle.  With 14,552 islands, lots of spots, lots of fish.  .

The rusties are sort of into west end, but I don't know how much.   But in my experience the weeds vary from year to year.   Like this year, our beach didn't have as many weeds as last year.   And the bay on the east side of center Island didn't either.   But other places seemed to be about like usual.

I will be going up at the end of the month to do a little fishing.  I will do a little calling around and find what others have to say as for the bite on the chain if they have been out.  I will report back to what I find.  Should be good fishing with the cooling temps!
