Four of us fished Cenaiko on the opener. We were there in time to start fishing an hour before sunrise. We fished the south end of the lake in about 12 fow just south of the deep hole. We put about 30 to 40 trout on the ice. We kept 10. We threw back the rest - some were bigger than the ones we kept and some were smaller. We left the ice at 10, but the bite really slowed down at 9 or so. We could still mark them, but they were pretty spooky and not nearly as aggressive. Waxies and eurolarva were the bait of choice fished on a small to medium teardrop.

Now, the bite will only get slower.

I've got some pics of some of the fish if anyone is interested.

One other side note, a lady out there caught a 16.5" crappie. I've never seen a crappie that big before. You could have fit a pop can in it's mouth. I was told she sent her line down with a depth weight on, and it hit that. I've got pics of the crappie too.

TJ, Good to see you had success. Was there the usual big crowd there for opener? I would be interested the pics. As I stated in a prior post I used to live in Coon Rapids. I would take my dog for walks in the park system and got some monster 4 lb smallies of the the dock. I also would get the occassional trout. You never know what this little body of water will put out next.

send me a pic of that crappie

I would like to see some pics please.
Do you have to have a stamp to fish there?
Also, I thought you could not use live bait there?

I would love to see pics too, please send both the crappie and the trout pictures to [email protected]

thanks

Yes, you need a trout stamp. You cannot use minnows, but you can use waxworms. Not sure why, though. The game warden was out on Cenaiko on Saturday checking, and I asked him about waxies.

I'd love to see all of the pictures.

My dad and I also fished opener. Was there about 6:30 and fished the end with the deep whole. We fished the shorline in about 7 feet of water, 2 people down from the dock. Used waxies and teardrop. You could see the fish come in, they were suspended at about 4 feet. I caught my limit and my dad caught one just before we left. Had on a larger one that may have been lake trout, but on 2 pound I had almost no chance. We got two fish after 9 and packed it up about 10:30.
I asked a conservation officer last year why we could use waxies and worms but couldn't use minnows. He said that they closely moniter what kind and how much food the fish consume and that minnows are hard to predict from year to year. I don't pretend to know anything about stocking trout but wouldn't sticking a few hundred minnoes in there when you stock the trout just make them bigger?
Also, tjhunter could I also get some pics?

Where are the pictures posted?

I'm sure there is plenty of natural minnows in there. That crappie didn't get to be over 2 pounds by taking steroids! grin.gif

You can use minnows on the lake, but they cannot be alive.

Nice fish! Mr Pike, let's make a plan to get down there next year on the opener.

Mykal, I was going to go there today but the wife kept me busy around the house. They really stock this pond prior to the opener but like TJ stated the bite declinces after the the opener...

How often do you head out there? I've got me the trout stamp and only fished the open water there a couple times. Never been ice fishing. Maybe one of y'all can take me there and teach me a few things. Or maybe another area lake?

Nice pics! I'd love to see more if you wanna send them my way:

Wow, those are some nice looking fish. I had a question for anyone who knows.
A friend was out on Cenaiko on saturday morning. He was checked by the dnr. THe officer told him that he couldn't use two lines or use live bait, he had waxies and crappie minnows left over from when we went out. Is it illegal to use live bait or to have it in possession? If he only had one line down and was tying on a new lure, is that illegal? I was just wondering if the officer was right or not, I had to assume so, if anyone could help that would be great.
Keep the lines tight and wet!

Can you use dead or frozen minnows?
Is there any city permits or stamps needed besides the park pass?
I live less than a mile from there and have never fished it, sounds like I should get my lazy but down there right quick!!!

As mentioned earlier, you can't use or possess live minnows on a designated trout lake. You can use waxies or dead, frozen, salted minnows etc. Only 1 line is allowed when fishing on a designated trout lake. Bring all the rods you want, but you can only use 1 at a time. You need a park pass & a trout stamp to fish Cenaiko. The hot trout jig for me the last couple years has been a white Ratso. They can't resist the tail action on that jig. Good luck, Vern

Dang, I should've went there. Instead went to Courthouse to get skunked. I saw a lot of lookers and missed a few to. I did have a laker hit my ducer. Looked like about 3 pounds. The bite was tough where we were.

The pic of the crappie doesn't do it justice. My boot is a 12 1/2 and the crappie dwarfed it. It is definitely a once in a lifetime trophy.

She kept it - I think to put it on the wall. That's what I would have done.
