Bug control in the boat

harvey lee

Recommended Posts

I was out cat fishing this week one night with a few friends and one had the Thermo cell along for those pesty skeeters. Chris started the thermo cell and the three of us were almost bug free all night. The other boat near us was swatting them hard.

I'm sold on this unit and will be getting one for the boat. great product.

I don't have one yet but I will very soon. I believe you can buy them from Cabelas and those type store along with Walmart. I believe the smaller unit is $20.00 and then one will also need to purchase the refill containers.

It has like a pressurized bottle that rune the unit. The bottle connects to the inside of the unit.

Wow ... thanks for the tip Harvey. I had never heard of this product before. I hate putting on bug spray, so this looks like the ticket. Just when I committed to not spending anymore money on fishing stuff this season - seems reasonable to justify this as not a fishing item, but a general purpose item for the home (LOL).

Those not familiar with a ThermaCELL - it comes as a small portable unit or lantern. Uses a butane cartridge that heats up a repellent matt releasing a chemical vapor that repells skeeters. Works up to 12 hours and effective range is 225 square foot area. Cost for the unit runs around $20-30. Got this info from a website.

I read up on a number of reviews on one of the on-line websites. Most of the reviews were very happy with its effectiveness on skeeters. Some caviats mentioned by some reviews include: takes 5-15 minutes before it his full effectiveness, is not as effective when there is a breeze, not very effective on flys, may give off a slight sent so hunters may be hesitant to use it.

I have also heard of people using these while early season bow hunting. I don't know if the smell would be a huge disadvantage but If the choices are don't hunt or hunt with a little smell, which is better?

Good idea in the boat - wonder if they keep those biting flies away?

No doubt Tom! Thermacell is the real deal IMO!

We were fishing next to another boat on the river, we had the Thermacell going in out boat and the other boat didn't have one. Of course we had some bug spray on as well but after a little while, the other boat yells over wondering what kind of bug spray we were using as nobody in the boat was swatting at skeeters. Asked the other boat if the skeeters were bad and they said they were just horrible. I've had it out 3 nights now on the skeeter infested MN River and am absolutely sold on it. The refill packs are $6 and I would probably use one of the refill packs per night (6-8 hours) of continuous use. I'm going to experiment with off and on use to see if I can get more time out of one but even at $6 per night, its worth the price of not having bugs in the boat.

I was a bit skeptical as well but figured it was worth a shot. Now I wish I would have picked one up sooner!

They should also!

It is amazing how these little things work. Basically it is about $5.00 for 12 hours usage, but I have been squeaking a little more out of mine wink Worth every penny in my book! I have been wearing just T-shirts, until it gets too chilly and I have to put on a sweat shirt. Never have I been able to do this before!

Last night, did not even put bug spray on. Definitely a “must have” for the night fisherman!

One hint, Wal-fart, camping!

I Googled it and can,t believe how small the unit is and with all the rain the bugs have been a real pain. Thanks for the heads up guys. grin

Wow! This looks great. I have been using permarathin on my clothes. I think this looks like a much better way to go for in the boat. Thanks for the info.

The tree stand guys have been speaking well of these units for as couple years now. They sell out quickly at Gander Mtn, often displayed in the Archery or camping area.

Another boat bug barrier trick is to get a pint of the yard barrier brew from the local hardware store. Mix up a spray bottle of it as directed and spray the carpet or interior of the boat with it. It sets up a zone around the boat and wards of ankle biter flys too. After a hard rain or two it is good to spray another coat, repeat as needed.

As with anything like this be sure to store the pint of concentrate in a safe place away from pets and kids, and remember to store it in a warm area in the winter and a jug will last a long time...many..many spray bottles worth.

I have no carpet in "Ol Viagra" so I just spray the inside of the gunwales and around the perimeter, works well for me.

i am really interested in spraying/ controling the ankle biters etc on the bottom of the boat. what do you mean by a yard barrier brew? could you name a couple? i use black flag spray right now with ok results, but if there is something better i am al for it.

It is the stuff used to spray a yard to keep skeeters away. Not at all like a can spray, it is a concentrate made for sprayers. Not cheap, yet a pint lasts a long time. The name eludes me, I'll need to try to locate it in my junk after my move...that may be fun.

If I remember I got it at Mernards or Fleet Farm?

For the ankle biters, deer flies, horseflies, use Bullfrog repellent. Pricey but works great, I used this last summer because the flies were horrendous and I am sold on it. They sell it at Wallyworld.

lambjm, your fm bugsy must be immune to your bug repellent! just kiddin. so what everyone is saying the thermocell, bullfrog, and other yet to be named stuff not only works on sqeeters but flies in the boat also? i am more interested in the boat and pesty flies than sqeeters.

I was that other boat, that Tom and Chris are talking about, I went the next day and bought one after getting ate up by mosquitos, and watching them guys not even swatting them. I used it last night for the first time, it works! It takes about 15 minutes before it is working best, but after that 15 minutes, you dont even see a mosquito around! It was $21.99 for the green one, or $24.99 for the camo one, I went with the camo. Replacement cartridges are $6.95. It comes with one container of butane (12 hours) and 3 cartidges ( 4 hours each, total 12 hours). I dont know how I fished without one!

We will be in good shape after today Scott. I'm going to Walmart to get one tonight. One cannot beat these if the skeetrs are out and bad.

Got to love those impulses. grin

Wal-fart only had the green ones. I would be intrested in seeing the camo one though. I guess green and camo are not to far apart unless it is desert camo grin

After reading this post this morning, I stopped in at Gander (because i was going there anyway....you know) and picked up the green one with the full refill pack.

It says right on the box that it repels black flies also...not sure if they are the ankle biter ones or if the flies just didn't get the message.

I'm going to be using it out on the big pond this weekend to try it out.

I also picked up one of those bug nets that you put over your hat and head. Those freakin fish flies and who knows when the mayflies will hatch. I just hat those thing crawling in your ears and in your nose. eek It's not a fashion statement but who cares.

I wonder about breathing this stuff in. I see the package says not to breath the fumes, but how do you prevent that in a boat??

I would hate to grow a third eye or something grin

You can hardly notice the smell, and I am sure it isnt any worse then breathing in the spray!

"black flies" are also known as biting gnats. IMHO worse than the mosquitoes themselves...

I have got to get one of these things!

Wal-fart camping section eh?

Mule Shack,

Those nets should work great! I used them on the pond for years.

Good luck this weekend!

Gnats.....#%%^&......Buffalo Gnats are the worst! They really chew me up. In my hair, ears, chew me up behind my ears....#%$&!!!! MAN I hate Nats!!

When the female gnats are biting about the only stuff that works for me is the 3-M Ultrathon lotion. Or the head net...and it has to be pretty darn bad before I reach for the head nets.

Them pesky $%&*&* Buffalo gnats tend to be the worst after a high water event, as they hatch out in mass from the moss left behind. So be ready for them this year guys!

KHNATS!!!!!!!!! Hate um!!!!

I swear by a Bounce dryer sheet, regular scent, hanging from the back of my hat to repel Gnats. Works all the time to keep em from my head.

Thanks for the thermacell tip guys. Oddly enough, I have to run to town today and hit the big box stores with the wifey, so at least now I have a good reason to go!!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
