Had a buddies house get broken into Friday night. The house was brand new this year and they tore the metal door right out of the frame. Got a heater, a tackle box and some rods. I told him not to leave anything in it and not to lock it but he wouldn't listen. Maybe he will now.

I'm headed out to Bald Eagle - buckshot or slugs?

I would take both and get some target practice smile.gif
How low of life do you have to be to be stealing a few bucks and ruining thousand dollar shacks.
They must not have a job that is for sure.

Live two blocks away and it's the last lake in the state I would fish this time of year. Way to many A-holes to enjoy a nice day of fishing.

311,
I had mine broken into christmas day at BE. Never leave anything in it.I pull mine home everytime. Lucky I live close enough. Im considering a night of no car, no lights, no movement and hopefully a creep will bite and get his but kicked across the ice.Good luck.

I had mine broken into around christmas. I don't lock or keep anything in it anymore. I've heard other reports of breakins also, your buddy is not alone.

Sprung,

I've thought about doing the same thing. Man I would like to get my hands on the creeps that do this.

It was our house. It had to happen late Sun night (1/11) as my buddy was out till about 11pm and was back Mon evening.

We are set-up on the NE corner of the main island. If anyone saw anything, a voice would certainly be appreciated.

You bastards better keep that stuff hidden in your garage!

My buddies shack is over in that area and it got hit a few times. The shack is open so they didn't need to rip anything off but all they could do was take the jigs off the rattle reels.
Who would go through all the effort of getting caught for 2 bucks in jigs.
Bald Eagle is a big party lake though, everyone is asking for it having a house out there.
It would be fun to find them though, with a couple hundred houses out there, why cant people watch out for eachother.

I had a fish house on the lake for many seasons. I never once locked the doors. The worst thing that ever happened was someone used it as a toilet. I believe it is a game with some peolpe to see how many they can break in to. It has been going on for at least 15 years that I have fished the lake in the winter. Beat them at there game by leaving the fish house unlocked and no valuables left behind.

I'd say buckshot for sure...

I know this sounds weird but there should be something someone could do like booby trap a house when they leave. I'm thinking of the old bucket of water trick that the 3 stooges used but in this case it would be a frozen bucket of water/battering ram. When someone opens the door the bucket swings at them thus hoping it knocking the person on his keister or breaks their nose. Yeah I understand that if this were to happen to a moron that would break into houses he would tear the thing apart. Maybe someone would see something? Or I think they make some type of personal keychain alarm that when you pull a pin a peircing alarm sounds....attach one to the door of your house (inside) and when they open the door it pulls the pin and an alarm sounds. These are JUST ideas, no they haven't been tested or even saying it will work.

I don't know.....I think I might would use maybe some 2 shot lead!!!!

I was thinking about the trap/alarm idea. It would not be hard at all to rig up an external light and siren to a car/marine battery. Not sure if it would really help though.....hard to say. Maybe if you got one of the entremely loud fog horns!!!

Posted

311, Thats a great idea. A fog horn would get the attention of anyone on the lake and a creep would run at the noise. Would be great. Hey, maybe he'd slip on the ice and break a leg or something. We can always hope SPRUNG

I think there needs to be a sting operation formulated on Bald Eagle. I don't even own a perm. shack, but would love crack some skulls.

Posted

How bout using one of those trail cameras for deer. If you could figure out how to hide it so they wouldn't find it you could get a picture of them breaking in.

Posted

I doubt the alarm thing would help other to give them something else to steal.....battery, fog horn, alarm, etc.

How about a bucket full of garlic olive oil....(stays liquid)

Or small pyrotechnics (smoke bombs, grenades, C4, 55 gallon drum of ANFO, etc.) rigged on just a nine volt and some model rocket ignitors. Email me if ya want help on this one........or as firemarshall Bill would say "let me show ya somethin'"

Hi Guys. This is SPRUNG's wife. He is on BE right now and just gave me word that a shack on northeast tip of cigar island a light tan with green door and the name Dick Stark on it was possibly broke into. He says door hanging wide open and a bucket and tip-up laying outside. He picked up the stuff and put it back inside and shut door. If you know Mr. Stark please pass this along.
Thanks. Good fishing!

Thanks for the quick update. That's exactly where our house is that was broken into. Our's is tan also, weird. I'm going out there tonight to check on the house, and I'll keep an eye on the others. This is getting ridiculous...

I had a permanent out there 14 years ago. It's the same 5hit year after year. Toward the end of January, I was going to pull it off after being broken into 3 times. As I was driving to it, I could see my door wide open and the opposite shore right through it! Dumb-asses drove right through my $$&^%5-ing shack! (Glad I wasn't fishing when it happened) I was (still am) pissed about that. Totally destroyed it.

You know, it would be nice to catch them, but on the other hand, if they are that out of control to do the stupid things that they do, I would hate to be the one to have had my skull bashed in or be shot dead while trying to protect my ice shack from some idiot looking for dope money.
Be careful! If you catch them, kick them in the balls twice for me, and once for my old shack!

haha...wastewater...I think you may be on to something. I might be interested in the C4 idea!!!!! That would most likely stop them from performing any other break-in's, or anything else for that matter. Sacrafice the house for the good of the rest of the lake!!! Wait...wait...it's not my house to volunteer....

Well, either way lets hope these guys get dealt what they have comin....

where to begin...where to begin...
It's nice having a permanent shack...I've had one for the last 5 years...but it's also a lot of work and worry. I have two portables that I end up using much more than the perm. I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't turn the perm into a shed...but then again it's nice this time of year to just pull up to the perm...jump out and be fishing shortly. But then, as most of you know...in order to catch fish one should move around a lot...but I know it's sometimes nice to just sit still and bs with whoever or just be content with catching whatevers under your hole or whatever is lurking around the area. I see the plusses and minuses to having a permanent shack. I guess I can't say it's a good idea or a bad idea...like I say...I've had one the last five years and continue to use it. Fortunately I have not been broken into yet or vandalized and I'm on a metro lake...but I do not keep anything in it and keep the windows uncovered so people can see there's nothing to be had. I would imagine I will eventually have someone break in even though nothings in there...that's the way things are. To those of you out there that do own permanent shacks...I would suggest, (like others have before)...do not leave a single item in the shack at all...and think about leaving it unlocked as well. Ya...someone might take a dump in it or even fish in it...but that's the price you pay...and it shouldn't come as a shock if someone does do that. I'm not sticking up for the cock suckers who do that...I'm just saying that's the way it is, that's the way it's been and that's the way it will always be. Good luck to everyone with a permanent...I feel your pain. I will continue to report obvious breakins/vandalism and encourage others to do the same. But bottom line is I think we will always have this problem and I would urge permanent owners not to put out anything (house included) that they can't afford to lose. There's my 2 cents on the whole deal.

A combination of Alarm, game camera, and teargas would do the trick I think. the Camera would get their picture, the tear gas would blind them, and the alarm would alert others. I doupt they will remember the camera after they regain their sight if their skull is still in one piece!

Uncle Jake,
I left the window curtains open and left nothing non-attached and they still broke in. I have a cook stove, vented heater and 4 bunks. Its a nic perm. Im afraid to come back to ice. No house. Ive just learned to pull it home everytime. No worrie then. I do think a loud horn would work. It would bring attetion to the house. Im sure other people would hear it and look to see whats up. My two cents.Ill be fishing tonight. I will keep a eye out for anything unusual. SPRUNG

The fisrt permenant house I ever built was put on Bald Eagle back in the seventies. It was broken into the first night it was out there. I didn't have anything in it so they melted all the styrofoam insulation (beadboard) on the inside. The most populus thing on the lake at the time was the 18-24 year old drunken male. I was out there a couple of years ago and it was the same and I suspect things haven't changed much now. I avoid Bald Eagle like the plague. Whatever fish are in there aren't worth the headache.

Nah, I'm not changing my guess. It's more fun to make early predictions and see how far off I am.   I'll turn on the hair dryer and see if it helps.

Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.  Also, since SkunkedAgain was the originator of this competition and was the 1st person to guess, I will give him until Friday to change his prediction if he wants to (although he may regret if the ice goes out on April 18th).  After him, no more "changes" will be allowed on my board.   Lots of "good" open dates available for those that have not predicted yet.  Updated board below:

https://www.timberjay.com/stories/moccasin-point-upgrade-has-longtime-users-concerned,22802   Moccasin Point upgrade has longtime users concerned DNR hopes to get major remake of key access underway later this year Posted Thursday, March 20, 2025 10:36 am   Marshall Helmberger LAKE VERMILION— With funding finally in place, the Department of Natural Resources is planning to move forward with an estimated $2-plus million renovation of the Moccasin Point landing, and users of the site say they’re concerned about the changes. The landing has been heavily used for decades by anglers, Boundary Waters visitors, residents of nearby islands and other remote-access properties on Lake Vermilion and, perhaps most critically, by emergency responders for everything from fire to medical response. Moccasin Point has also been a protected harbor for private barges loading and unloading as they service the many water-access properties in the area. Sarah Schmidt, who spends summers with her husband Jake at their cabin on nearby Pine Island, said there’s a lot at stake for people who depend on the landing. “A lot of people have designed their dream home around having access to that landing,” she said. “People need propane, they need lumber, and if they need to install a septic system, they need lots of gravel,” she said. For the many hundreds of island or other water-access property owners on the lake, all of that material comes by barge. Moccasin Point is particularly well suited for such use, since it is arguably the most protected harbor on Lake Vermilion, with islands and mainland protecting it from wind from just about any direction. It’s also centrally located on the sprawling lake and close to concentrations of island homes and cabins. Scott Kelling, northeast regional manager for DNR Parks and Trails, said the plans for the reconstruction of the landing are still being finalized, but insisted they will take into account the unique mix of recreational and commercial use of the landing, including use by all three of the barging companies that service customers on the lake. According to Kelling, the remake of the landing will include removal of the old pier and the reconstruction of a new one in nearly the same location. “The new pier will serve the same function,” said Kelling, and will include an additional ramp that will be dedicated for barge loading and off-loading. Kelling said an engineer’s inspection of the existing pier determined it was near the end of its useful life, although Schmidt said she thinks that opinion reflects the DNR’s desire to remove the structure rather than its actual condition. Kelling acknowledges that it’s not the only reason for replacing the structure. “With our redesign it’s just not in the right location,” he said. Adequate parking is another major concern of longtime users of Moccasin Point. Tim Logan, whose family has owned island property near the landing since the 1950s, said plans the DNR had shared a few years ago seemed to show less parking than is typically used at the site. Schmidt notes that during high-traffic weekends, the parking area is frequently full and overflow parking can extend for hundreds of feet along Moccasin Point Rd. She said she counted 163 vehicles parked at the landing at one point last Memorial Day weekend and said there are routinely 90-100 vehicles during the summer season. Many of the regular users of the landing, particularly those on island properties, use the site for long-term parking of their vehicles for days, weeks, or months at a time. That’s unusual at public landings, which are typically limited to day use. Kelling said the DNR is making an exception to that rule for Moccasin Point, given the many varied uses of the unique property. “Overnight parking will be allowed,” he said. Kelling said the current plan will allow parking for a bit over 100 vehicles, which is more than some original plans for the site. “We’re doing everything we can to maximize the parking there, at some considerable expense,” he said. Longstanding issues Kelling said the DNR’s plan for reconstruction is motivated by a desire to “manage the site more responsibly on a number of fronts.” The DNR acquired the site in 2008 and had planned to undertake reconstruction of the landing back in 2013 but lacked the funds at the time to accomplish the work. The funding was approved in 2023 and the DNR has been working on design of the project ever since. According to Kelling, the site has operated essentially as a “free-for-all” for years, with uses and resource impacts that aren’t typically permitted at DNR-managed access points. “There are currently a number of transgressions out there,” said Kelling, including long-term storage of personal property and building materials. He said the site, which slopes toward the lake, also contributes large amounts of sediment into Vermilion during heavy rainfall. “We need to better manage the stormwater,” said Kelling. “Currently, a lot of sediment and other things end up in the lake when it rains.” Schmidt questions whether the change will be an improvement, since the DNR’s reconstruction of the site will convert the existing grassy hillside that currently serves as the site’s parking lot into a paved parking area. Kelling said the parking area will be leveled before being paved and that stormwater will be directed into one of two planned stormwater ponds in order to contain sediment. Schmidt claims the ponds will become a mosquito breeding ground. Kelling said he expects the final design will be completed soon and he is expecting to hold an open house in early summer so interested users can see what’s planned for the site. He expects actual construction to begin sometime in October if all goes as planned. That initial work will include blasting of some underlying bedrock in order to level the site. But most of the work will take place in 2026, he said, and during that period, it may be difficult to maintain public use of the site, although he said use of the site by barges should still be possible, with potentially some minor delays. But he said other users of the site may want to explore other access options for that summer. Kelling said he hopes to have more information on that at the open house later this year. “A goal of the open house is to really share the timeline and alternatives for users,” he said. “They might need to park somewhere else in 2026.”

I think once you guess your date, that should be it. If you can change right up to their date, that kind of takes the fun out of it.....in my humble opinion! Let vote on it!😀
