We're flexible. I see Lisa will be gone the 14th, so the weekends on either side would be ok.

I'll put a mark on my virtual callendar.

maybe we could talk ol putz into doing his schmeldt fry at the campground?

we havent picked a date for that yet.

It doesn't matter to me, I'll be there one way or the other. The bite is picking up out there. 3 of us last night put 15-20 'eyes in the boat and kept 6. LOTS of little ones!

That Saturday should work for me, plus it gives me an excuse from having to mow the grass at the cabin.

I still have some rather large shiners left over from this past weekend. Should I bring them along to fry up?

grin

after reading about this gtg i thought yippy i could get up to the cabin 2 weekends in a row and take in a northern mn fm gtg, finally meeting all these people lying about hunting and fishing, ok i was just kidding about the lying part, ive never met a dishonest sportsperson before, hehhe, then i get home and in the mail is an invite to a surprise 25th wedding anniversary. bummer!!!! seeing i was the best man i figured, ok my wife did, that i best go to it. so that shoots down another gtg oppurtunity. on a brighter note no grad parties so far, yea. now that im done whinning everyone have a good time and dont eat to much smelt.

ok, I have a situation here.

my oldest son, has decided to kick it into gear and finaly get his required school work done, proving my gut feeling wrong, he, out of spite, has graduated high school.

this means we will be having a graduation party for this little butt terd. just kidding...sort of. I love him to death, but he is I have to say more stubborn than his father and made this whole senior year much harder than it should have been.

at any rate, we with short notice have to put something together for him. it has to be on a weekend when my wife is not working and we do not want to push it out to july, so looking at the callendar, we will have to do this on the 14th of june...see my problem?

it will be a somewhat small gathering of family and friends, but I will most likely join my wife in celebration.

If I do make it to the campground, I probably wont be sober.

hey, I earned this one.

I will most likely take friday off, to get everything ready, so I might be able to sneak up friday evening.

saturday will be hit and miss.

who knows how it's going to go for sure.

I know after 18 + years, I am glad to get this one on the books!

Grad party on the 14th or GTG? Lisa suggested the 21st for the GTG. BTW congrats for the kid!

I'm not sure about the fishing on that Saturday but for sure we'll socialize in the evening. Who is actually camping? I think we'll just drive our 3/4 mile over there! grin jigglestick, you are a natural born storyteller, let me tell you!! Congrats on the grad!

My son, nephews and I fished the public access area off of #19 on Moose Lake. We actually caught some really nice perch!! No one wanted to clean them, so they lived another day! I know it's sunnies you're after so I'll keep my ears peeled if I hear of any reports around the cabin this weekend ok?

Dave, Is that campground run by the DNR and does it have electricity? Mrs. boatfixer wants to know.

bruce, it is a DNR run campground. it does not have electricity.

it has a hand pump for water, and a couple out houses.

it is nice though. we have stayed there several times.

as I re-read this I am trying to figure out how i was thinking it was the 14th we had figured on.... derrr

It's a pretty nice campground. It's really clean! When Jim and I got married up here at the cabin, some of our guests stayed here and they had no complaints. No worries jigglestick! I hate it when I get those old Alzheimer's moments!! madcrysmirk

So the official date is the 21st? I'm on call that weekend and will be stuck at home waiting by the phone for work to call. I could make it up there after I'm done working on the 20th Friday night (6pm) if anyone will be around.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
