Fairmont-Marshall-New Ulm-Worthington Area Fishing Reports - SW MN

  • 2 weeks later...

Marshall area: Island lake has still had a consistant day bite for Perch and northerns. Most of the perch are smaller 6-8 inch but there are jumbo's to be had. most of the pike are small but there are some real nice pike being pulled out. Dead coon, Goose and Wood Lake all have a large amount of open water. The slough to the West of Dead coon has good ice, the bite only tends to be good an hour before dark to an hour after. The walleye and perch tend to be smaller but there are some keepers in the mix. East and West Twin lakes have decent ice, East has been producing some 12-15 inch eyes just before dark but the bite window seems pretty short.

How have people been doing on the eye's? Haven't seen a report in quite a while on this forum. I was thinking of trying maybe sheteck, sarah, or benton in about a week or so.

Thanks

So hush hush in this region you'd think the fish are biting? grin

Pretty slow weekend for me, but a fun one. Got the kid out on the boat saturday on Shetek, Sunday on West G and Fulda.

Very little success on shetek and west g, but plenty of action on fulda.

Here's a shetek walleye and a happy kid.

Fulda puts out 6-8" bluegills and sunnies all day long! Great spot for a kid. It's like bobbers don't float on that lake, as soon as it hits the water they SINK!

A reliable source just informed me that Lac qui Parle Lake is putting out a lot of fish right now. However, the river is only giving up northerns, cats and sheepshead.

Mountain Lake, 10-12 inches of good ice trucks have been driving out for a week or so, panfish bite has been good, pike and big bass have been seen but none caught that Ive heard of. If you have little kids that you would like to get into ice fishing, the water is clear and the panfish are everywhere so its perfect for that. Also, fyi the Mt. Lake ice fishing contest is Jan. 26th.

Here are some pics of my 4 year old boy from a few days ago

I am looking for a cabin to rent for a week this spring . Lookiing for a place with cabin on the water with a dock for my boat. Never been that area but tired of the long drives from Iowa to northern Wisc. Any help appreciated.

Haven't seen much chatter on here about border opener or crappie fishing yet this spring. I'm assuming border opener is gonna be a bust with the weather we have been having. But im curious how things are turning out around the area. I was out yesterday afternoon and i noticed Lake Shetek is pretty much open, and same with Rock Lake in lyon county.. Are some of these other lakes opening up yet (Hendricks) (Big Stone) any chance to be on the water next weekend on them?

Can't imagine it will be long before the crappie will be biting do ya think?!

Not sure about Hendricks but I know there is still quite a bit of ice on Big Stone yet, enough to drive ATV's on.

Fished Hanska today. Not nearly as good of luck as others have reported. My son and I caught 1 walleye 18 inches long. Not another bite. Talked to at least 3 other boats. Not one of them caught a single walleye. 2 of the boats did catch some channel cats though. We used jig and minnow, and trolled plugs. Caught the one walleye pitching a jig and minnow in about 5 ft of water.

Fished Hanska twice in the last week - not a bite. - yesterday talked to other boats - same - not a bite - marking way fewer fish than last year.

Might be due to the fact that the lake has been getting pounded for the last 2 years and it was bound to slow down at some point.

Anyone fish Lake Sarah lately? Just curious if there are any good reports out there. Thanks.

Fishing must really be hot around here. wink The last post was over a year ago. Did all the fish in SW MN die out since mid June of last year? whistle

I second that one Shutterbug. Either it's really dead or really hot and everybody in the SW part of the State is good at keeping quiet about it!!

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!
