I am planning on going out to Bald Eagle for the first time ever this Saturday. I will be pulling out a 7x14 sleeper with an Expedition.

1. Will the ice be think enough?

2. Where should I go?

I have downloaded the DNR map and the lake looks pretty good. I can be mobile it only takes about 15 min. to setup.

I will be staying overnight until Sunday eve. Just me and my 7 yr. old son. I dont mind panfish, crappie or eyes, I'd just like to catch some fish.

I aint the kinda guy to setup ontop of someone and I can be very patient. I just want to catch a few, any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The ice should be think enough. On Saturday there was somewhere between 12 and 14 inches on most of the lake that I ventured accross. I took the ATV out. With the cold temps you should be okay. Get away from crowds, find some fish on your locator on decent structure and you are sure to find some crappies and an ocaisonal walleye. Baldy isn't too hard to fish. I have had pretty darn good luck so far this year.

If you can make it to the rock point on the east side that would be a good place. I don't know how the ice conditions are that way so you will have to check and make sure it is safe. Drop me an e-mail and I can help you out with a spot.

Are there any other public acesses on BE besides the regional park? I haven't ice fished there in about 10 years but I seem to remember a place you could get to the lake on the northeast side. Is that road still there?

None that I'm aware of. There is a resort of the far north side of the lake that rents boats but I don't think they have an access out of it.

I was out last night for a little while and had great luck with the crappies. I was in about 24 ft just off a break. My vex was lit up the entire time I was out (7:30pm-9:00pm)they were on bottom and suspended about 5 feet up. The crappies would attack the bait on the way up. I was using bobbers, but they wouldn't hit it just sitting there. I had to slowly bring the bait up and they would strike. What a blast. Full moon and warm weather has them going.

Good luck.

Hey Olie how much ice was out there? Were most people driving out? I know White Bear had about 15 inches so I would assume so but I'm heading out there tonight and want to drive.

Everyone was driving, but me. I have an ATV and I used that but there was about 15 inches+.

If you want to e-mail me, I'll give you the spot I was in last night. [email protected]

How big were your crappies? I've fished bald eagle many times and caught tons of them, but very rarely bring any home, cuz there to small. I don't like to keep any crappies under 9 and sometimes 10 inchs.

There were only two that were under the 9 inch mark, the rest were good sized. I didn't keep any though, I still have walleye in the freezer from LOTW. I usually don't keep fish anyways, I like to just catch and release.

Ole #1 I struggled last night to even get a bite. I marked a ton of them down there but could only lure two of them to bite in 1 1/2 of fishing. Pretty ticked off about that. I'm not sure I like having the Vex (Christmas Present this year, before I could just say I was fishing in the wrong spots, now I know it's something wrong with the fisherman not the spot! (LOL) Well, I'm thinking of heading out there again tonight. I sure do prefer being able to drive out when you only have a limited amount of time to fish.

F.F. - were there cars on the ice, is there enough clearance on the ramp to get on and off if your not driving an suv/truck?
It would be nice to drive out instead of walking.

Thanks

Iceburyman,

Yeh I seen some cars coming and going however, that ramp has a pretty good dip on it. I think I would take it real slow going down onto that one. I think I seen a car last night go up and around the ramp, just to the right of it. Probably a better idea than the ramp itself, as long as one of the Sheriff's not sitting there.

By the way, Bald Eagle is the capitol of the world for drunk, and stupid I may add, teenagers. What the hell, these kids seem to be getting younger and younger and they are bombed. I helped a couple that were stuck in a car last night. Two sober, one driving plowed. Would have called and turned them in only I didn't have my cell. Be careful out there these kids are reckless whipping around and driving as fast as they can on glare ice.

Ice seems to plenty safe but be careful at that access for bottoming out.

Last night the bite was hot! Between 3 shacks we caught over 70 crappies. Kept 2 limits of 9 inch plus. 28-30 feet was the best depth. If your graphing fish but not catching them try a minnow head. I couldn't buy a bit on waxies, euro's, or whole minnows, then I switch to head and it was game on, or should I say fish on!!!

Do you use glow jigs when you use only the minnow heads?

Maybe the drunks kids your talking about are finally getting some attention. I hit B.E tonight and was approached by the DNR and two sherif dept people. Maybe their looking for the weekend drunk young uns. Thanks for the info on the ramp! big bumps to clear at the end of the ramp, that would make a very loud noise if hit at any speed. Caught 20 or so craps on the first spot, lol.

There is a lot of ice out there, pretty slick.

Was at Bald Eagle today for about 8 hours and caught 4 crappies. We spotted 100+ on the camera but couldn't get them to bite. 14-16" of ice in most spots.

Hi all,
did great on the crappies last night. some big ones also. (C&R) Fished 28ft ( no structure) with a SMALL minneow and green glow jig. Thinking of moving to the gravel point north. Looks I might fish 27 ft and put a tip up around 18ft with a fat head. Any advice?? Thanks sprung

yep, glow jigs are the ticket. Try a red glow too if you haven't already.
