Does anyone have anything to report about Lake Josephine? Ice thickness? Good action?

Taking my brother out tomorrow at about 11-5:00 (prime time, I know!) but football on all day. Will be in a purple Otter, probably off the beach.

thank you,

Mark

I will rb see you out there tomorry. the 'eyes have been biting anywhere from 10 to 20 feet, it seems as they are just roaming around. People are catching small crappies and bluegills in aboot ten feet of water straight out and a little to the left of the beach. northerns have been slow, but it seems whenever the sun peeks out there is a little flurry. Maybe i will see you out there tomorrow, will be wearing a brown carhart jacket.

Greetings,

I was out on Josephine yesterday from 2:30-6:00 pm. I had bites all night (most likely perch) but I did manage to pull up one 11" walleye.

I was in 24' of water off the beach and jigging off the bottom. Boy it was cold at the end!

Where do u go? I was told to go straight across the beach to the other side of the lake. Was I told wrong?

Howdy,

I went straight out from the beach into 20-25'. If you look at a topographical map, you will see there are dropoffs about a 1/3 of the way across the lake.

Since the dropoff is "circular" in nature, I would assume anywhere along the ridgelines of 10-25 feet would be good. But I have only been there once, so what do I know!

Best of luck! I marked fish from 3:00 until I left at 6:00.........

Are you guys sure your speaking of Lake Josephine? Walleyes? I live on the lake(rarely fish it outside of spring and fall), but I have never seen a walleye come out of it. My neighbors tell me the DNR mistakenly stocked it once 25 years ago(supposed to go to Johanna). Is it possibly they are reproducing? If any of you go out, let me know. I am very aware of some hot spots of other species on the lake, but I'd love to fish for some wallies if they are there. As far as the pike go, everyone out there is about 500 ft. away from the hot spot. Let's meet and we'll trade thoughts. FYI full size trucks are more than safe across the whole lake now.

yes this is the same Josephine. Me and my brother have caught several nice fish out of there in aboot ten feet of water to the right of the beach as you face the water. One was aboot 25 inches, several 20 inchers, a couple 18s, and a whole ton of eyes in the 10-14 inch range.

I belong to the lodge on the north shore of the lake, where do you live on the lake?

The DNr has been stocking this lake very recently also, i think most of these fish are stocked, they have the numbers on their website at: http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/showreport.html?downum=62005700

all of our smaller fish were caught at the northern edge of the hole by the beach, but the bigger fish dont seem to hold to any structure that i have noticed, they just wander around.

You guys getting any crappies or sunnies out there? I live over by Long, but would like to try Jo for panfish. Anything biting?

i am back in bemidji now, but when i was there last week they were catching crappies and sunnies in aboot 7 feet right in front of the beach. nothing more than 5 inches long but they were fun to catch

Bobb-o,
There was a gathering tonight at the lodge. Thought you might be there, then I logged on and see your in Bim. They all just left. Tell those guys that they need some exhaust work on their vehicles...LOUD! I've probably met you before. I have the dock at the access directly right of the lodge, inbetween the lodge and the white house w/ the pool.

Bow fishing for those carp eh? That sounds like a plan! There are some big ones. Let me know when you'll be fishin' Jo again, I'll come out and meet ya.

Catch 'em fast!

On the South Shore...  There is still some good ice fishing to take advantage of if you still have that itch and want to ice some walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, maybe an eelpout and certainly big pike.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st.  Some resorts have called it a season, but other resorts still have fish houses out, are still fishing and have availability.     Fishing reports have been good.  Numbers of walleyes, saugers and perch.  Using electronics is super helpful with some larger walleyes swimming through suspended.    It was a great week of pike fishing for most.  Good numbers of fish and some big fish tipping that 40 inch mark coming topside.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom has been effective.  Most pike anglers are fishing in depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen from Nelson Park at Birchdale, MN (30 miles east of Baudette) and to the west, which is where most anglers spring fish.  The ice is showing signs of deteriorating in places.  The river is open water about 20 miles east of Birchdale near Loman.  Things are happening.   A good reminder, as of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.   Sturgeon fishing.  Once the open water appears, sturgeon are active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th. Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle.  There is still some ice fishing happening with some, and others have called it a season.  Call ahead if you have that itch for one last ice fishing trip.   Walleyes, saugers, perch, crappies and pike are in good numbers.   The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well.  You can fish for sturgeon through May 15th.

It's that time of year again. What are your predictions for ice out this year?   I'll guess exactly one month from today - April 18th. Fishing opener is a little earlier this year so hopefully we aren't running up against the clock.

Ya know I typically don't cruise through Inger too often. Still looking for a plastic, orthopedic or cardiothoracic surgeon so I can be a stay at home husband and catch walleye every day. Not a whole lot of those in this neck of the woods 😆
