So because we want equality we are racist?

Boy is that not the truth. To say Indians should not use new boats is really stupid. We should ride horses to work too, but that is not realistic and is certainly not going to win any debates.

If you were on the other end of those treaties signed you'd have a different outlook too. History is too hard to overlook. Growing up as a native in a non native town was pretty tough and people, not all people, can be pretty degrading. We have every right to hold on to what we have left. Whether it's a tradition we can still practice or a language and culture we are trying to pass on it all matters to us.

The culture is a fantastic culture. I have the utmost respect for it, however in this case I feel it is being abused. Discrimination at it's finest.

 Quote:

Just asking you to open your eyes a little more and realize this is bigger than some fish.

That says a lot.

Last words from me on this, I promise, and then I will let you guys beat this horse.

There is a priveledge by the Indians to do this, notice I did not say right. This priveledge can be taken away at any point in time, whether it be by the president as stated in the treaty, or by sound biological theories. This should not be overlooked by either side.

I don't think anything that has been said here is going to change anyones mind, and most certainly not the Supreme Court Justices who will make the decision. That is why I am backing away from it here.

The Indians who are doing this for the right reasons (religious, food, etc.) are not the ones being discussed here. I think we are again talking about the "pigs" among us, and they are the only ones who get the press. Stupidity does not follow racial lines. I happen to know way more stupid white people then any other race.

The definition of descrimination is: treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination.

Seems like this definition fits what is happening to everyone who does not belong to one of these tribes.

Leechbait, If you are ever in my neck of the woods, let me know, I would love to show you around some of my stomping grounds, or maybe search for some flatheads on the mighty Mississippi.

Well the individuals that do that should be reprimanded, there is no excuse for doing something like that and I wouldn't try to protect that at all. But the intruders have their days too, I can see it now, the dog days of summer, standing there holding a 26" walleye, slime dripping all over your beer belly while your drunken buddy is fumbling around trying to figure out how to work the camera. 5 minutes later, gills bleeding the fish in in the water, where it swims to the bottom of the lake and dies. Why don't we talk about them people too.

Or the guy in the 21 foot tracker with $6000 dollars worth of electronics on his boat who goes out 4 times a day and brings his limit home everytime.

These scenarios are happening on your beloved fishery also.

If it's that bad, if they are wasting fish and if they are stupidly using their privelage than it should definately be monitored more and action should be taken.

LAST WORDS FOR ME ON THIS ALSO, It irks me too since I am on the other end of this ya know. sorry for looking like an ash hole

These both are valid issues I agree 100% with. I have seen the first one done. If there was a realistic way to monitor and change this I would be all for it.

I cant comment on the second as I havent seen it done but I would agree that this is not right or legal.

Hey leechbait, I am sorry if I came off a little strong, it was not directed to you in any way, shape, or form, but rather towards the few Native Americans that make the rest look bad. I'm sure it is just a few bad apples that make the rest look bad.

The problem with this issue that I forgot to mention is that there is a clear line of racial privelidge. This issue is never going to go away until everyone is treated as equal. How are we ever suppose to get along with each other when there is clearly a divided line seperating the two?

Oh yeah and Farmboy, it would be an honor, it would even be better if I knew where your neck of the woods is..... Leechbait

and Dhanson, don't sweat it. I'm all for getting rid of the "bad apples". and it's pretty tough to be equal to people that look down on you like you're inferior to them.

This is discrimination-one race being allowed more rights than another. Plain and simple!!!

jnorm1984, while you try to justify the tribal netting, and try to put the weight on fisherman, you are blindly bypassing the financial end to this subject. I really don't think the indians are funding any research studies on multiple aspect that we as minnesota sportsman fund all of. Point being is to take 100,000 +- lbs. of eyes they should also as a BAND be responsable for 30% +- of the funding milacs receives from mn. fisherman. With all the various studies and DNR enforcement we fund let alone the local business we bring to the lake. Who knows we are probably paying for the indians hotel and meals while they are harvesting millions of eggs. I think if they want to play they should also pay. All my opinion.

What a joke, get a license and a boat like the rest of us! That is just pathetic using nets.

What I don't understand is, the Federal goverment bought out the

rights of the indians, but yet every so many years, the tready was brought up again. When someone buys something from me, I can't go back 10, 20, 50 years later and say you didn't pay me

enough and reclaim that it is mine.

Hunter76: I have a "license" and a boat. Good god give it a rest, until all of you that are against any thing that bothers a group of people, can band together and try to change whatever your against things are not going to change. Voicing your opposition here means very little to anyone, other than the people that belong to this site. It appears your all against whatever someone is doing, well then get off your "fricking soap box" and do something about it.

Now I am going fishing and will not be back to this site for about 5 months from now. Good luck to all and be safe.

Good point. If people want to change this they need to make the effort and contact your pols. Every e-mail they get in like 1000 because most people do not make the effort. Talk and no action is a waste of time.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
