Gill Nets Under The Ice

It's a law that the fish in the slot have to be released. It dosen't matter if the fish lives. This is wanton waste. It's not about what kind of boat. This is commeriacal fishing. This what I said in my post before.

I wonder how many of you are willing to give up your electronics and Pro Vs, and fish as your ancestors did. Wouldn't seem much like a "sport" anymore then would it. Is it a shame? Yes. Are the Tribal members happy? I doubt it. I wonder how many "extra" pounds of fish head south in one given summer. And as far as raping and pillaging, of the 430,000 lbs total harvest, 307,500 goes to the anglers and the remaining balance-122,500 is split up among 8 tribes. Who is doing the pillaging?

[Note from admin: Please read forum policy before posting again. Thank you.]

As for the argument by others regarding angling during the summer and fish not surviving the catch and release. The fish at least have a chance to recover and survive after being released from the boat. Can that be said about nets? Yes, some don't survive after being released, but do you think this problem occurs on Millie only? No other lake in the state? It happens all over and if there was a cure-all, I'm sure we'd be informed of it. It's unfortunate that it happens, but it doesn't mean the entire state should shut down for a full 2 months in the middle of summer or anything. It's been going on for years and years and years.

My whole problem with this net situation is not only will it kill numerous walleyes that apparently will go to waste, but those nets are going to trap other fish species too I'm sure. Musky, pike, bass....drifting around like that those nets could kill a whole bunch of fish besides just the walleye. And who knows what else could potentially get caught up in the nets. We can only speculate at this point in time.

Everybody wants to know why those nets were put out when there was still ice on the lake and the forecast clearly showed where the wind was going to be from days in advance. Everyone wants to know what they were thinking. Well I'll tell you in one word exactly why and what it's all about, and there's no denying or debating what is clearly the truth.....

GREED!

I've said my peace.

Cultural Heritage, Hmmmm I wonder if this is the way the bands want their cultural heritage defined?

Is this the way the history books in 2050 will tell the story?

big nets, aluminum boats, metal sprears, and 60+ horse power motors? this was the argument wasn't it?

I'm all for the allotted 122,000 lbs being taken if it were being done exactly as it was 200 years ago. have at it.

But please don't try to enact law based on cultural heritage and then resort to the modern methods of commercial fishing!

I belive the treaty is at the pleasure of the president is it not?

I thought we allready had one grand cultural hertiage experiment on Red Lake, did no one learn anything from that?

And never forget that My cultural heritage could never be associated with anything like this mess. I don't carry the guilt syndrom that many do that even allow such nonsense to get off the ground.

Please, bands,it's time to rethink this heritage thing it's getting embarrassing.

Let's not compare commercial harvesting and improper catch and release. They are not related.

Only one problem to your logic there Nuggets, the 300,000 or so pounds gets divided up among all the state's anglers, and the other 100,000 or so goes to one group of people. I'd say they get more than their share. And we aren't talking about our nice boats v. their nice boats, we're talking about a fishing line v. nets! Come on man, wake up.

All I am asking for is equality. We can't change what happened in the past, but we can control what should be done in the future. Let's get some common sense. Maybe we should all move back to Europe too.

  • 'we have more fun' FishingMN Creators

The debate over the right to net is over, has been since the court ruling so rehashing that is not going to do anyone any good.

Look at it as commercial netting.

Yes there'll be some fish wasted. The wrong info of 100 nets lost under the ice kicked this whole topic off with opinions gone wild.

There is no way to sugar coat this but reread the article.

Just as the summer floaters from anglers are tallied toward the total take, so will the fish lost in these nets. Still in both cases those fish are wasted.

When this is said and done we'll know what those numbers are.

IMO the ice will be gone soon and these nets and the waste will be accounted for.

As I said the debate over netting and modern equipment is a dead one.

Lets use those advances in equipment, weather forecasting and what we've learned with this mistake and not let it happen again.

thanks ST for the calm word of reason. This event is not going to kill the lake, let's hope lessons have been learned.

Me too. 215,000 lbs for tribal members and 215,000 lbs for anglers.

From what I hear, fishing is actually very good on the big lake.

There was never a concern for fish numbers until 169 was built. The lake was not yours to begin with. Maybe you should consider your self lucky that you were included in the treaty. Consider it rent. Move on

I agree with ST. And this all got started over mis-information and is getting out of hand.

Glad to see some one has a grown ups perspective. Thanks Frank

Another way to look at this is yes, a mistake happened. With that being said, since the netting has started, seems the fishing and quality of eyes in ML is still pretty darn good.

I think there will never be a great solution here. We have a group that thinks they have the right to do as they want, and another group that thinks they are hurting a beatuiful lake. American indians may have built the first communities in our state and were probably the first group of people to put the feet in the MN waters, but what gives them the right to claim "ownership" over what God put on the earth for all of us to use and enjoy. Personally I feel I should be able to hunt and fish the same places as the modern american indians can. Their ancestors migrated here just as mine did, theirs may have been here a little earlier or maybe stayed here a little longer. We are all here now, but they take hundreds or thousands with net and spear, I take 4 here and there w/ hook and leech or minnow. IMO, it may be an ignorant statement to some, but that is how I feel.

One has to learn to deal with it whether one agrees or not. It is the law of today.

Laws do change and this one has and is here to stay and the sooner we accept this, the better of one will be.

As I stated above in my last post, even with the netting that has been going on, the fishing for me on Mille lacs has been nothing short of great for quality and quanity even with the netting for the past years.

Lets not forget that the bnds are allowed to take part of the in the regular fishing season too. So part of the general allotment is also up for them to take. This is year 2008 not 1837. Watch the video on u tube. This is raping and pilaging!!!!

Walleye - Pike - Perch- Muskies- Slap em out. It is an injustice and we the general public fishermen will pay with poor fishing and tight slots.

Your was a very intelligent statement youngie. I am happy to see that you are knowledgeable enough to know that they are not "Native Americans" and that they indeed migrated here just as yours and my ancestors did. This is a very common misconception among people that do not want to take the time to educate themselves of the truth. For more on this subject please google "Kennewick Man". I know the Indians and bleeding hearts among you do not want to acknowledge this, but the Indian has no more right to this country and our resources than any other American. For those of you who want equality for all americans, please keep up the good fight. You will eventually win.

The judge in Minneaplis made it this way in phase 2 of the court ruling in the 90's and the Supreme court upheld her ruling.

This does not mean it is right Charley, and it does not mean that a more rational and less emotional court will not overturn this horrible non-american mistake in the future. As a matter of fact, I strongly believe that should this case get to the U.S. Supreme Court again with the current makeup of judges, it would be overturned quickly.

I don't like one bit either. This about politics not what is right or whats good for the resourse.Double stardards or not. The state didn't look out for you and I either, or the resourse for that matter.

I agree with the above, If this issue were to return to the courts based on current merrit, it would be obvious that this is a commercial fishing operation not an event to preserve Cultural Heritage. I strongly believe in the right to preserve heritage as long as it remains true to form and no outstate parties should be allowed to cross over to use the resource they can use their own local resources.

This was brought before the courts under the gise of cultural heritage and has morphed into a commercial fishing operation.

Please, don't insult mine or other sportfishermans intelligence by this current operation the tribes have going.

Would the DNR have allowed them to just ourtright start a commercial fishing operation similar to URL?

The days of operating under the assumtion that we americans owe any other race, creed, or imigrants anything other than the freedoms enjoyed by all should be over, but the courts just can't get that and it's frustrating.

If I were of indian decent I would be very hurt that I need to be treated as a special entity the needs help all the time just to make a go of it.

We won't change the minds of the tribes but maybe they will have a change of heart when they have enough of your casino money which started the whole thing anyway.

Long live the Pond!

It seems to me that the Judge wanted it this way. The great lake indian commision set this up to be commerical fishing. Before the court case the DNR allowed indians to net walleyes for cultural purposes for years. of crouse we pay for it all.

Common sense says all waste white man or Indian is wrong. The Indians waste was caused by a mistake of putting out nets with ice on the lake and ice movement over the nets. White mans waste is caused by a law saying to release curtain size fish with no accounting if the fish will live or die. Common sense says both the system and laws should be corrected so both white man and Indian waste are minimized or eliminated. We are smart enough if we work together to fix these problems so the resource will be there for all the future generations.

GREED on either side is not the answer it is what is good for all our children and grand children that should be the bases of our decisions.

Thank you white man

When we lived in MN. ML was one of my favorite lakes. Don't know if I will ever fish it again with all the size limits and such. It'a shame because it is a great lake. Hopefully things will turn around, but, first the courts will have to get some common sense. Hope to fish it with my grand kids again some day.

Harveylee, I could not disagree more that this is something we should just "accept". I believe people should stand up for what they believe is right not just give up and say that is the way things are and just "accept" it. This may be off the subject a little bit but I grew up dirt poor with teachers etc. pushing me to get into this or that because I was not going to make much of myself. But I didn't listen to them and forged on to try and make something more of myself. And guess what? It paid off. I am a very successful business owner today because I didn't just "accept" what I was told to "accept". PLEASE do not take this as anything more than it is. A Person who believes life is what you make of it, not what others make of it for you. This is a very important subject that deserves to be discussed and everyones opinions are important.

And that is exactly what the Native Americans did is stand up for what they believed in and our United States courts agreed with them. I personally will live with what the courts have decided. I also will and do enjoy the great fishing on Mille Lacs.

There are times when one needs to accept the law and live with it. There are others that do just as much damage to the lake and are not Native Americans. They made a mistake and we need to live with that also.

Another question might be, why can't we all just get along and go fishing within our own set of rules?

Not to add fuel to a fire we have no control of, but “really” what is anyone going do?

What can we do? The fact of the madder is nothing! Sure, we can sit on FM and rant about it, but why? The fishing opener is next weekend and I can think of a hundred other topics to talk about.

I will tell ya what most are going to do in the next week, “fish” \:\) .

This is another one of those topics I hate to waste time thinking about and like harvey lee just said the courts have spoken and this situation in all reality hits home for the tribes. This will go against their allotment for this season and translates into less revenue for them. I think they will learn from this minor mistake and will take action so it will not happen again in the future.

Mistakes happen and that is what this is, we “all” make them from time to time.

P.S.

I agree, the pond has been pretty good for fish the last couple years and longer for that fact. I have seen plenty of good reports on FM and heard others. Just got to find them and giv'em what they want. I think this season is going to be one of the best in years. Get up and try it for your selves. That is the only way to catch fish and if you only go once and get skunked, go again.

Good luck.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .
    • SkunkedAgain
Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
