Just an fyi for ya guys, Waconia has a quite of bit of water on the lake 6-8 inches in some areas. And it is starting to swirl in some areas. The recommendation is to move houses away from holes and make sure it is blocked up good. Try not to crowd houses together by shore because it will make the wind swirl right around them. If I hear anything else I'll let ya know.

Ice is back to good again today. No snow left so I guess that the Idiots on snowmobiles will stay away

Be careful out there! There are some open holes and active springs around the Kegs reef area! The hole is about 12 feet in dia. And there is a active spring west of there, A friend of mine dropped his front tire through in this area and luckily got pulled out. Ice was only 3.5" thick!

Thanks for the heads up Rainman !

Rainman,
Haven't been out to Waconia since I pulled the house off Sat. Any word on ice conditions over by cemetary and/or the East side of the island?

Thanks

Hi guys.
I live in Inver Grove Heights....and my dad is having a hip replaced at the Waconia Hospital tommorow. Thought I'd plan a fishing trip on Waconia on friday so I can get up and see him at the hospital, too. Any pointers on an area to try?.....Know nothing about this lake. Don't care about species.....just want to catch some fish!......Thank you.

Was out on the ice this afternoon and it is really shaping up nice now! There are two other spots that are marked in wagners bay that were (are) bad! Ice seems fine on cemetary reef and the east side of the island! Quite a few people are driving their full sized trucks out, Maybe next week I will be also! Panfish are going on strong right now but you really have to sort through them! Walleyes are running on the small side with the occasional 18 - 20"er! plan on being out every nite through this weekend! See how it goes! See you on the ice!

Thanks Rainman.

Hey Skyndalive; if all you want to catch is fish and are not worried about size, then fish out in front of inn towne by there houses best is between house #6 to #2 (closer to #6) along the weed line, lots of sunnies some with size but fun. Good luck to your dad

Moved the house back out Wed afternoon, instead of putting it on cemetary, I went out on the north end of Waconia Bay by a couple of co-workers houses, I am sitting on 13" of ice, in 13 feet of water. Action was slow most of the night, had a hot run just after the sun went down, then another hot run from 7:45 to 8:30, then alll was quite.
at 10:30 I put down the rattle reels w/shiners and laid down for a power nap. At 2:30 am one of the rattle reels went off, I played a fish that had lots of fight for about 15 min, just as it got below the ice it let go, Never got to see what it was, but it sure was fun playing something big.. That was it untill 7AM when the small perch started biting. Packed up and went home around noon. Will try again Sat night.

Just bringin' it back around to get some current info? What's happening out there lately?

pillsbury was good if you find a weed line at 25-25 ft, with minnows, or waxies, on a orange or green glow. we bagged a two man limit.

Whats the ice thickness, Are there unsafe ice spots on the lake yet?

Thanks

Friday night was good, iced 30 crappies, one 10 1/2", all returned and 5 walleyes all under 12" all returned. Saturday night was a different story, started fishing @ 6 pm, and fished untill around 10:30-11:00 on sunday, caught 2 small crappies. Caught around 6:45, had one small walleye around 1:30 AM, let go at the hole. Even the perch and sunnies weren't biting on sunday morning. Must have been the weather.

Posted

sunday eve was good, started at 4 on pillsbury, and caught crappies until around 9. filled a bagof 10-12 inchers

Posted

Fished on 1/3 from 3:30pm to 1:00am. Not alot of action but managed a half dozen crappies of which I kept 4 along with my first keeper eye of the year, a plump 19"er. Had one other hit and drop on a big fathead and a number of lookers during the night. Fished in 12-13' right on the weed edge. Got the eye on a med. fathead on a bobber while jigging in the second hole. Seemed to be on a transition area as the Zercom was blank and then showed fish for a bit before going blank again. Got the eye around 9pm

For those wondering about Waconia's Ice, it is conservatively between 12 to 16 inches.

If we know about any bad areas, we are marking them with branches and/or 2x4s.

Anyone who sees anything unusual, please mark it and tell us at the marina.

All in all we have very good ice!

I have been fishing the east side of the island sat, sun and tonight with 2 eyes every night but the are 6 to 10 inches and no crappies. I am right on a drop off going from 14 1/2' to 17 1/2 feet in the house. Any recomendations?

This lake has been pretty frustrating the last 2 years for keeper eyes. I have found several spots that I have been able to ice numbers (some nights 15+ fish) and not get one over 13". Last year I fished a spot and caught small fish all night long and then had my partner ice a 26"er from the same hole at 10pm. This year I got many small fish in 18' but no keepers. I moved into 12' this past Sat. and only got 1 but it was a 19"er. I was right on the weed edge and did see perch before sundown and also got crappies after dark from the same hole. Are you right on the edge?

I'm pretty familiar with the area your in. There's a steep drop and at the top of the drop there should be a fairly well defined weed edge depending on how healthy they are. The drop goes down into 20+'. I am referring to the weed edge itself. A move to the base of the drop may not be a bad idea either. I'm figuring that you're fishing the point that extends from the NE corner of Coney to the NE or towards the clay banks.

Scale----That is exactly right just off the tip of the island to the NE towards the banks...I think I am going to move it out to the deeper part of the drop off where it flattens out. I will post when i get out there

hey chaska, try moveing to a little deeper water, and also try to find a weed bed.

Scale what do you mean the edge? edge of the island or edge of the weeds? I am on a steep drop off off the east/northeast side of the island but i do not know how far off the weed edge I am. If things dont pick up tonight I will have to definatly move somewhere.LOL....Dang small eyes though.....Any other reccomendations?

Howdy All....

Hey InTowneGuy.... With this lack of snow, and a snowmobile without ice studs.... Any idea of how I could get my light weight 8x8 permanent over to the north side? You guys got a tow service available?

I'd use my truck. BUT.... A 9000# diesel is better left on shore, don't you think? shocked.gif

Thanks....Dan

Hey Moose Hunter: Yes, we can tow your house out for you if you'd like. Give us a call a day or two in advance. If you are looking to go to the north side of the lake, just remember that if we get a lot of snow, we only plow out as far as kegs, anything further & there won't be a road (we have to keep some areas of the lake quiet, so we don't disturb everyone with traffic).

It's kind of sad. The two lakes I loved the most in this state are Mille Lacs and Burntside.  And I think we broke them both!  😕

Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.
