so haaad,
Welcome to Fishing Minnesota!

Here are a couple more options close to Coon Lake...

I would try Linwood Lake just up Viking Blvd from Coon Lake. Linwood Lake is full of crappies. Go straight out from the access to the 23 foot hole. Find a spot anywhere from about 18-23 feet and you'll find the crappies. Buy some of the smallest crappie minnows you can find, I'm talking like 1-1.5 inchers. Vados Bait off of 65 in Spring Lake Park has them. Drop down a small size 10 jig with one of these tiny minnows tail hooked and you'll get bit. Bring along some euro larvae too, Vados also has those.

You could also try Ham Lake, thats also in the area. The access is off of 65 in Ham Lake. A lot of crappies and bluegills in this lake. Although most are small, it will provide constant action for the little guy. Fish the 15 foot hole on the back side of the island straight out from the access. Or else go a little further towards the 22 foot hole and fish in that area. Same type of bait applies as out on Linwood. Euro larvae might outproduce on Ham Lake though.

Another option would be to head up to the Chisago area lakes. Chisago Lake and South Lindstrom Lake are both good for fast action for crappies and gills.

Feel free to drop me an e-mail if you have anymore questions, or else just post a reply here.

Good Fishin,
Matt Johnson

Many thanks, Bigfish, Matt and Rakfishboy. I'm up in Alexandria right now, got four northerns this morning, all released. One three lbs, the rest smaller. Sounds like I'll be fishing in the cities with my nephew tomorrow. Thanks for the advice, it's greatly appreciated.
