Has anyone ventured out on Long this winter yet. I know there was some talk last winter about walleyes being caught. I live right by the lake and would not mind giving it a try.

Posted

Fished Long last friday from 4- 9:3o p.m.
Caught one northern about 2 1/2 lbs. about 4:45 and 3 small walleyes under 12 inches after dark on small spoon and a minnow head.
Not hitting very hard. Tried the underwater point on left out from the access 11-17 ft and across the lake on the sharp drop just this side of that point 10-23 ft.all fish were caught around 13-15 ft.Saw alot of fish on flasher but hard to get them to go, maybe a plain hook and fathead?

This lake should support a nice walleye population as is heavily stocked for such a small body of water.

Long lake can produce some nice northerns, I've fished them in the summer and did real well with nice pike including one close 40 inches. I've fished the eyes out there but never with any real success a lot of smaller ones with an occasional, and I mean occasional 2-3 pounder mixed in. The last time I was out there I noticed them catching some nice crappies off of shore so perhaps that's the fish you are marking down there. If you guys have any success in the winter let me know. A good spot for the pike is right off the point, just sout of the beach.

I too grew up in the area and looking at Long last year and got a good forum going on it. Some useful info was passed around... here's the link:

Good luck, can't wait to hear your report!

Hey guys there are a million Long lakes.
Which one are talking about?

Posted

Its the long lake in New Brighton. I was out there last week. Got set up at about 8pm. Caught one 17" eye and missed a few more. Fish came in about 20 minutes after I was set up so maybe a earlier set up time next trip. There are fish in there, just got to get right on em. Good luck out there. When I was out it there was about 8" of ice.

Jughead where are you located? Have you lived there long? My parents live right on 14th there....maybe we were neighbors!

Was out yesterday afternoon and managed to get a mess of crappies. Only kept some between 9-11 inches. Also hooked on to a few bass and blugills. Vex was lite up. Try by the beach. Good luck

Posted

Also went out on Saturday in the morning in the rain thinking they would turn on in the nasty weather(thank god for ice creepers)
Tried from 10 to 25 ft.Caught 1 northern about 2 lbs.one small walleye, and 3 crappies about 8 inches or so, then I got sick of water rolling in under my trap filling the hole with what looked like sewage and decided to fish another day wink.gif

Hi guys,

Setterguy, I have been here for 3 years, I live off of 12th Street NW right behind Champps. Real close. I love the neighborhood....and my proximity to Long Lake.

I am glad to hear there are a variety of fish to be had. Looking at the DNR map it appears there are a number of good spots to try. Are there any proven spots that anyone would wish to share?

Mark

PS_ I just saw the text link provided by Catchin'whopper. Thanks! Lots of archived info there.

Magician,

Long Lake is in my back yard as well but I have never tried it. I am right by Pike Lake elementary.

I saw a truck on the lake off of the boat launch on the south end about 50 yards out on Saturday. Crazy. One perm house on the west side.

If you ever go out, let me know-I can get a report or I'll look for you! I will do the same. I just don't know the lake very well. I will need to do some research.

Hey magiciaian, were you by the new beach or the old one? When are you going to head out again? I live about 2 minutes from the lake so I may head out again this week. Black otter, with J. Novatney on it.

Posted

Setterguy I was out to the right of the beach on Sunday. Right meaning as you walk out from the beach. I grew up in NB also and graduated from Irondale in 97. Fished the old Long for years. Pretty dirty lake but has some nice fish in it. Shoot me a reply when you have a chance.

I grew up fishing Long and have had varied success (graduated from the ironjail in '95). Some years are great but others, well if you know Long then you know what I am talking about. Have always caught fish right at 5 and then later on in the night, but the eyes move in and out pretty fast. Any of you guys ever try the north side of the lake during the winter? tried it once, didn't catch anything and couldn't see much on the vexilar due to the current. Maybe I will see you guys out there sometime.

Tried the North end about 6 years ago. Moved around quite a bit and found nothing. Caught a perch and that was it. Nothing but Mud all over the North end.

I cannot emphasize enough to stay away from the NE corner area of the main lake of Long. I fell through there and so does many others each year... especially that wandering vehicle. Not good! There are springs there and the carp always keep the ice paper-thin or open all winter.

As far as fishing.. Fished it all my growing up. Lived off of 15th St. Just a few houses down from the west shore. Done real well for crappies just slightly south of the new beach in what looks like a little bay area. There are lots of weeds there with a good drop to about 20 or so. The points are always a sure bet for craps and especially walleyes. The main point NE of the old beach is a common know spot. It drops to about 35 quickly. Same with the other point directly across on opposite side. West shorline before the point is a nice ledge about 50yds from shore. Good walleyes there. North long lake is a continual flow of water that eventually dumps into the mississippi 15 miles west. Caution... last few years the area had lots of open water. However, I have caught lots of walleyes at the creek mouth coming out from the east in 5-15' of water. It drops real nice to the 20's if you keep going westward from the mouth. There is also a sunken tractor and trailer from the early 1900's that sits down there too. I caught an 8lb walleye above that junk and many many other large fish... Hope that helps... Let me know if you need more info. Fished there since 70's...

Just an idea, i know we had success on the north beach, just go off and it sloughs off slowly. We had success with crappies and small walleyes moving in and out through there. There is not much for weed or edge structure here, just sand/muck.

East of the beach you will find some weeds creeping up, not many though. More sunnies seemed to be around there. We would park in the beach parking lot and draw are equipment all down from there. Depth of 10-15 feet was probably about 30 yards off shore. Funny, i grew up on 16th street nw, west of silver lake road. Good luck, let me know how you guys do.

Did you check those old posts?

They used to have a fishing tournament on this lake. I fished the tournament once. A 2.5 pound northern won it and a guy took 4th with a small sunny. I also fishied it once in the winter by some beach, had one flag but dident catch a thing.

Fishing magician, I graduated from Irondale in 94. I think I am going to go out to Long Lake Friday night and try to find some fish. Are you going to be out?

Hi guys,

Happy New Years to you all!

I want to clarify some terms as they pertain to Long Lake, as I am a bit confused about some location terminology despite living right there. I apologize, but here is how I understand it:

In the southern part of the lake is the boat launch, and the points that CapnJack eluded to are in the west; the lake is split "in two" by the old bridge pilings; In the northern portion the beach is in the NE corner.

I have heard reference to the "old beach". Not sure where that is.

The reason I ask is that Mr. Freeze has warned us about the thin ice in the "NE corner of the main lake". Is this the extreme NE corner by the beach, where many people say there is some decent fishing? Yikes, I am confused!

I will be there Thursday morning, if I can figure out where I want to go. Purple Otter tent.

Mark.

PS- Irondale guys; I was the last graduating class out of Frank B Kellogg in 1986 before the merger with Ramsey. You were our bitter football rivals!

Posted

The old beach is where the boat launch is now. I thought my dad told me the springs were over by the NW corner by the condo's, I very well could be mistaken. Mr. Freeze are the springs over by where that little creek flows into the lake just East of the boat launch? Thanks. I think I am going to try out from the beach on Friday night for some crappies and walleye's.

Hey Mr. Freezy and catchin'whopper:
Last year you two talked about "the little pond on County D and 35W that feeds into Long". Do you mean the pond by the post office off County E2? It's easier to email me at [email protected] Can you tell me any more info that you did last year? Thanks!

Posted

Oops, I meant to say by the library.

Posted

Without going back to that old post from last year, i am sure we were talking about the pond next to the ramsey county library. all i really know about that is, that it does feed Long Lake by the "old beach" on the SE side of the lower part of the lake. (That ice can be a little thinner just dont drive the car around there as there is little reason anyway, it is close to shore).

But the pond on E2 and 35w i have hardly fished. From other people i know who have grown up in the area and have fished it, i hear there are small panfish and pike there. Nothing really too exciting. But who knows?

As far as the "new beach" that is considered to be the beach on the northeast shoreline on the southern or lower portion of Long. It is in the Ramsey County park there.

GOodd luck!

SORRY! I meant to say NW corner. NW NW NW
THE SPRINGS ARE LOCATED IN THE NW CORNER>>>

Clarification: Old beach=boat launch area
New Beach= NE beach in the Long Lake Park.
People who have known the lake for years still refer to the old and new beach because the old beach was there so much longer than anything on that lake. It's an icon from the past... God help all of us who actually swam in that lake! Yuck..

Fishing: I walked out and fished a little yesterday just 20 yards out from shore of the new beach area. Lots of sunnies. Some were actually nice but most were smaller.

The pond I was talking about last year is the library pond. Not sure what's left in there since they put a small dam at the mouth of it many years back. The DNR sure knows how to ruin a good fishery. All sorts of fish used to travel up to the pond in spring and fall from long lake.

* Let me know if you have any questions on the Lake... I am full of ideas... Good Luck.

Oh,,, I would definately try the bay just south of the new beach tonight for crappies...like before.. I recommend making as much light as possible through the ice with your lamp. Let me know how you do>>>

Going to head out to that bay tonight Mr Freeze and try for some crappies. How deep do you think I should set up? I am going to be getting out a little later. Probably around 5. I'll be in a black otter, stop by and say hi if your out there.

Posted

Fished the new years eve night bite on the south east point. 1 northern in about 25' of water (suspended at about 12') Saw alot of fish suspended at about 21' (assuming they were crappies, they would chase but wouldn't bite, minnows to big i would guess) I have fished the bay Mr Freeze was talking about, pretty good crappie fishing after dark. If they arent happening there, try just north of the beach about a third of the way across the lake, about 22' of water (just to the west of the 2 permanents shacks along the break there) did good there last year after dark, bite seemed to stop around 9 or 10. drill a bunch of holes and look for the blips on the radar. Good luck

Posted

Iceman,
I won't make it tonight but good luck. I would try to stick around 18' or in the 20's. If you have a flasher, you'll find'em. Close to the beach on the northend of the bay it drops off fast in one spot. That's usually a line stretcher spot for craps.. also try the opposite end of the bay toward the southeast point but toward the main lake. I think that the crappies like to roam there and then visit the west point....like an underwater express. "Disclaimer" I am not responsible nor garanteeing fishing success on Long lake... he he ... Don't come after me if you get skunked.......

Barely had time and data to post a few random daily pics!  😄   Iffen you’re self banned, how’d ya know? 😉   Sunday - Tuesday hunt near Yankton, SD.  We found ourselves there between two of the big pushes north.  Adults first, pushing the ice line north, slipped through a couple days before we got there and the second juvie push held up by the storm that went through the night we traveled.  Our best day was Monday.  Sunny and warm with a nice south wind.  Day 3 was cool with a stiff northeast wind bringing in another storm.     A select few groups did well with birds coming off Lewis and Clark lake but we weren’t in their path.  We packed up early and hit the road.  We headed north and found them between Brookings and Watertown.  Saw 100’s of thousands at the ice line.
