Yep... We had the same experience... The Big Crappies are gone... And the rest of the lake is shut down...

I worked every single hot spot I know of from one side of the lake to the other, and even tried a couple of shoot from the hip guesses, and still came up scratch...

Alex has always been a tough Cold water bite lake in the spring... But this is the worst I've ever seen the bite!

Any new news on Fishtrap, coming up this weekend, and hoping I can have a little success. I know the walleyes are always tough, but are the crappies around? Anyone been there this week?

Our league fished fishtrap on tuesday. Very slow, we caught the only walleye's (6) and only 3 crappies where brought in (12,12,14) along with a half dozen pike.

We caught our eye's in 12-13ft of water right on the weed edge. we could not get a bite while trolling or drifting, we anchored and fan casted lindy's w/shiners or leeches. A very hard hitting bite, they grab and run like pike, low hooking % as we missed another 11 bites. fished from 6-9pm, move around if you don't get a bite in 15 minutes or so at a spot and you should find them.

Thanks for the advice! No trolling or drifting though, that's kind of strange, I've only ever caught eye's there while trolling. The agressive bite would be fun though. I'll give it a try this weekend and see if I can find anything. Hopefully the lake isn't too busy and churned up for fish to bite. Did anyone try crawlers?

I think the reason fan casting was working well is that we could cover and fish a spot slower than we could with the wind and tolling motor. A cast took about 2-3 minutes to retrieve, very, very slow. Surface temps ranged from 50-53 degrees, still pretty cold, but getting better. With the warmer temps this weekend they could start.

I'll try the casting method, I have a couple spots I've had some success, but they are small areas, and it may be nice to just stay on top of them. I hope to be productive when I'm out, as I have a 4 week old son that my wife will be watching when I'm out, I think my time on the water will be limited.

Fishtrap was slow, but I had little time to fish it. As predicted, my son took priority over fishing. I was only out a few times, maybe a total of 4 hours. 2 small pike was all, caught trolling, one on a rap and one a lindy rig. I somehow managed to snap some fireline on a hook set (who knew?), and lost another fish on a bad hook set, as I had my drag set entirely too loose to set the hook. My final outing ended with my motor dying and having to be towed in, so overall not a very good weekend. If anyone was out there, I was the one with steam coming off my head...

I haven't been able to make it up that way in a little bit... (Headed to Winnie Tomorrow) But in general none of the Lincoln Lakes do any good when water temps are cooler... Add the Milfoil spray to that... And just shooting from the hip, you're going to have to work for them!

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, this weather is tough and not helping out any. I guess I'll have to figure it out on my own. Dances- Good luck on Winnie!

My buddy has a cabin on Fish Trap. He's hasn't actually been fishing a whole lot, but all he has been catching were hammerhandles. Now his neighbor on the other hand is a die hard walleye guy, and has been fishing there for alot of years, has had limited walleye success this spring/"summer". Got a few up shallow after dark 2 1/2 weeks ago. But he agreed on the small northerns dominating the bite.

Muskieboy, thanks for the report.. First decent news I've heard. I know I've heard rumors in the past, but being that you're a muskie guy, have you seen or heard of skis' in fishtrap? I'm more of a walleye guy, but always curious about that.

I know of two muskies that have been caught out of fishtrap last year 45" and 43". They are there but probably not in any fishable numbers though, I would think they migrated from Alex. There are also smallmouth in Fishtrap, I have caught two 15"ers out there.

Yep, I caught a smallie last year, I was quite surprised, I had to double check, but it was a smallie.

I will be on Alex 6/27 - 7/6. Walleyes doing anything? I had success Memorial on the weedline near Hirschey's and the second bar east of Haystack. Anything now? on what?

I saw a dead muskie in the mid 40's class at the public access on the trap about two weeks ago, so they definitely are out there.

yeah there are a few muskies in there. But like mentioned earlier, not really a fishable amount. better luck going to Alex.

p.s. saw a guy caught a 26inch walleye this past week on fish trap.

Lake was on fire yesterday. 4 fallows, 5 fish just swimming, 2 porpus, 2 short strikes, 1 lost fish after hook-up(going for net), 3 pike and 3 muskies in the boat (35, 38.5, 40.5).

Nice way to break the ice for 08.

MH, Dont fish Waleyes on the lake so im no help there. For Smallies fish the rock piles and rock points. Twich X-Raps and senko's. For large mouth toss rattle traps and spinner baits in the weeds. Muskies and pike through jerk baits, spinner baits and large bucktails.

Look for a tan and blk Crestliner with Musky Nut on the side. Stop by and say hey. Ill be on the water all day Fri and in the mornings Sat and Sun.

Good luck.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
