Anyone other than me planning on hitting or want to hit prior Wednesday afternoon, Thursday or the weekend?

Posted

I'll be out there this weekend and next week.
I'm in a purple otter den, I'll be fishing lower prior up around paradice bay. I was able to pick up a few walleyes, but was wondering if anyone has tried to catch some pike?? well, after tomorrow I won't be able to check the internet untill the 5th, so good luck. might see ya out there.

where is paradise bay? I have never heard of that before.

slenz - are you in one of the permanents then?

I will be hitting Koeps bay tomorrow between noon and 3 and then moving for some night time walley action down south of reeds isalnd. Depending on how I do, I might be heading to the very east end of the lake on Thursday and or the weekend.

I will be out each and everyday basically right across from the sportsmans access in a big group of permanents. We are getting eyes and pike and lots or panfish everyday.

Korn-fish: If you look at the DNR map, the farthest North-East bay(with the 35 ft. hole) is what I call "harbor bay", the next bay South (with the 14ft. hole) is what I call "paradice bay". I have been fishing the point edges between these bays. Limited success, but only out twice. Hope this helps. If your looking for walleyes South of reed island, I would also try north of the island too, did ok on opener in 14-17 ft. good luck.

Thanks lauger - I haven't been in either of those two bays yet. But I did all right out in front of "paradise bay" one evening, just off of the break of the shallow vegetation that extends out inbetween harbor and "paradise". If I don't do well tonight for the eyes, I will probabaly be heading that direction tomorrow afternoon.

Good luck to you. I will be in the two man green Nordic. I have yellow reflectors in the front, back and side windows and a red reflector on the sled itself, and my propane tank that I leave outside my shak has both red and yellow reflectors on them. A quick scan of the area with a bright light and my shak stands out pretty well.

We'll some one has to keep the lights on for the holidays, and I'm on afternoon shift so I can't get out much this week, maybe Sat for a couple hours, other wise I'm hoping to do a lot more next week, since I'll be on day shift, and I'll be able to hit prior a couple nights, and hopefully new years day.

I did alright tonight,,,but long time between bites....but thats how walley fishing goes sometimes. Only managed to ice 4 eyes... Missed a couple dooseys though. Did get a mess of gills earlier in the day.

Im gonna start cleaning the gills that I kept for a fish fry. I will be out tomorrow sometime. Depends on when I wake up smile.gif thinking about heading out for some late season bow hunting, but sleep sounds really good right now smile.gif So either when I get done bow hunting or when I wake up I will be out again tomorrow searching some new areas.

wwg - how does the east portion look for company? Is it building up or is there still some good areas to hang out in and be the lone shak?

Posted

You boys let me know if ya need someone to help ya catch all them fish. I was out last night and managed a couple crappies, but it was slow. Pretty sure the pressure in the mess of shacks I'm in aint helpin'.

I might be out tonight or tomorrow depending on when the wife is gonna give me my red bow--in-the-buff present.(I can dream right?).

I'm heading out to Prior on Friday (26th) sometime in the mid morning.. I've never fished there before and am targeting crappies and walleyes..Any suggestions on which area to target?

Hey Korn-Fish, you don't have to tell me where, but how deep were you catching those gills? Any size to em'? Any info would be appreciated!

IceFishermanDoItAllNight - I was in really shallow.,... 5-9 feetm deep on a fast break into deep water. I was probably only 5 yards from shore. It isnt a secret any more...It seems where ever I go, a permanent house will be set up there the next day......I guess I learned to fish inside of my shak regardless of how warm it is outside. smile.gif ..... Head to Koeps bay, you will see the shaks there....drill some holes and get yourself into shallow water....they are there.. anywhere along the shoreline there and between reeds island has been good if you keep yourself in shallow.

set up is a key though....the small ones are agressive, larger ones are usually lift biters and your set up needs to let you see those. About 1 out of 10 are keepers. The best seems to be at 2-4 PM

There were lots of keepers at first, but already the size is going down with the pressure they are getting.

When ya going out....I might be going out Saturday to try my hand at more walleyes, but will be in that area. I got my *** handed to me by a couple walleyes tonight and i have to get back there for some revenge smile.gif

walleyeking -

I don't know what to tell you for that time frame. I am still in the experimenting mode myself on Prior and I have only been out there noon to evening.

There is a small hump just south west of the landing at sand point. It is small, but if you can find it, you will be by yourself and I marked what I beleived to be eyes, but never got around to actually fishing it. 30 feet with a rise up to 23 feet.

Maybe Sunday?!?!?!

does anybody know anything about ice fishing ethic? last night i was out for the sunset bite, some ahole on a sled goes between me and my tipup(only 25' away), and of course it was right near dusk. then there is some ahole in an ultralite plane thingy, bussing every point and hole in the bay. again this happens right at peak fishing time. somepeople think that all the noise they make doesn't effect the fishing! what idiots! i'm a sleder myself but i hate it when people roll up on me during peak hours, or sled right next to me! its a big lake, you don't need to ride around all the shacks to show everyone your sled. i like fishing prior but its full of aholes! i stay with the morning fishing, and let the aholes sleep of their hangover. sorry all but i had to vent. enjoy fishing, thx.

Lucky dogg, I know how you feel. I hate that stupid plane deal. I don't know what they call that thing, but I sure know it makes a hell of alot of noise. And he flies it so **** low too. I he lands near my shack I will give him a word or two about how to share the lake.

Just got back from Prior..Fishing was slow although people were catching sunnies and a few crappies..Lots of people on the lake along with sleds and the ariplane you guys were talking about..

Posted

A quick report, fished L. Prior, N of the island in 16' last night, landed three small eyes, missed as many. Did see a bunch of crappies on the camera, never caught any though. Weekday fishing is SOOO much better without 1000 sleds/ATV's cruzing by every second!

How is the ice now? Is there any bad areas I should stay away from... I am new to fishing this lake. THanks!

Posted

wishicouldfish - just south of reeds island over the 6 foot hump may be a bit sketchy...It was one of the last places to freeze up and was only 4-5 inches in some spots right before the warm spell we had.

Others have broken through the ice walking back into candy cove. And that was before the warmup.

Thats the only two spots that I know of to be cautious of...but there is a lot of lake that I haven't seen yet. So there are probably some other areas as well.

Posted

wishicouldfish, the ice around the island the the east of Sand Point is good, probably 8" or so, but some of it is frozen slush. After next week's deep freeze, you'll probably see trucks out there. I Fished this AM in the same spot for two hours, caught a largemouth bass, and that was it.

Posted

thanks for the replies! I hope to get out this week!

"probably see trucks out there?" Ummm yeah, there were more than a couple full size trucks out there, peronally I still think it's a bad idea, the ice really isn't that great, and it made "unhappy" sounds IMO when people drove by. Get some ice cleats, borrow a wheeler, an extra 10 minutes and a little exercise would probably be good for all of us.

Fishing was slow.

Dang, this is like a free meal on Lakestreet in Mpls.  I didn't know this many folks were still on the site until someone said "Free raffle drawing"  🤣 🤣

Nah, I'm not changing my guess. It's more fun to make early predictions and see how far off I am.   I'll turn on the hair dryer and see if it helps.

Because I temporarily changed the rules, and smurfy was the 2nd person to wager a guess, I changed his prediction to April 25th.  Also, since SkunkedAgain was the originator of this competition and was the 1st person to guess, I will give him until Friday to change his prediction if he wants to (although he may regret if the ice goes out on April 18th).  After him, no more "changes" will be allowed on my board.   Lots of "good" open dates available for those that have not predicted yet.  Updated board below:

https://www.timberjay.com/stories/moccasin-point-upgrade-has-longtime-users-concerned,22802   Moccasin Point upgrade has longtime users concerned DNR hopes to get major remake of key access underway later this year Posted Thursday, March 20, 2025 10:36 am   Marshall Helmberger LAKE VERMILION— With funding finally in place, the Department of Natural Resources is planning to move forward with an estimated $2-plus million renovation of the Moccasin Point landing, and users of the site say they’re concerned about the changes. The landing has been heavily used for decades by anglers, Boundary Waters visitors, residents of nearby islands and other remote-access properties on Lake Vermilion and, perhaps most critically, by emergency responders for everything from fire to medical response. Moccasin Point has also been a protected harbor for private barges loading and unloading as they service the many water-access properties in the area. Sarah Schmidt, who spends summers with her husband Jake at their cabin on nearby Pine Island, said there’s a lot at stake for people who depend on the landing. “A lot of people have designed their dream home around having access to that landing,” she said. “People need propane, they need lumber, and if they need to install a septic system, they need lots of gravel,” she said. For the many hundreds of island or other water-access property owners on the lake, all of that material comes by barge. Moccasin Point is particularly well suited for such use, since it is arguably the most protected harbor on Lake Vermilion, with islands and mainland protecting it from wind from just about any direction. It’s also centrally located on the sprawling lake and close to concentrations of island homes and cabins. Scott Kelling, northeast regional manager for DNR Parks and Trails, said the plans for the reconstruction of the landing are still being finalized, but insisted they will take into account the unique mix of recreational and commercial use of the landing, including use by all three of the barging companies that service customers on the lake. According to Kelling, the remake of the landing will include removal of the old pier and the reconstruction of a new one in nearly the same location. “The new pier will serve the same function,” said Kelling, and will include an additional ramp that will be dedicated for barge loading and off-loading. Kelling said an engineer’s inspection of the existing pier determined it was near the end of its useful life, although Schmidt said she thinks that opinion reflects the DNR’s desire to remove the structure rather than its actual condition. Kelling acknowledges that it’s not the only reason for replacing the structure. “With our redesign it’s just not in the right location,” he said. Adequate parking is another major concern of longtime users of Moccasin Point. Tim Logan, whose family has owned island property near the landing since the 1950s, said plans the DNR had shared a few years ago seemed to show less parking than is typically used at the site. Schmidt notes that during high-traffic weekends, the parking area is frequently full and overflow parking can extend for hundreds of feet along Moccasin Point Rd. She said she counted 163 vehicles parked at the landing at one point last Memorial Day weekend and said there are routinely 90-100 vehicles during the summer season. Many of the regular users of the landing, particularly those on island properties, use the site for long-term parking of their vehicles for days, weeks, or months at a time. That’s unusual at public landings, which are typically limited to day use. Kelling said the DNR is making an exception to that rule for Moccasin Point, given the many varied uses of the unique property. “Overnight parking will be allowed,” he said. Kelling said the current plan will allow parking for a bit over 100 vehicles, which is more than some original plans for the site. “We’re doing everything we can to maximize the parking there, at some considerable expense,” he said. Longstanding issues Kelling said the DNR’s plan for reconstruction is motivated by a desire to “manage the site more responsibly on a number of fronts.” The DNR acquired the site in 2008 and had planned to undertake reconstruction of the landing back in 2013 but lacked the funds at the time to accomplish the work. The funding was approved in 2023 and the DNR has been working on design of the project ever since. According to Kelling, the site has operated essentially as a “free-for-all” for years, with uses and resource impacts that aren’t typically permitted at DNR-managed access points. “There are currently a number of transgressions out there,” said Kelling, including long-term storage of personal property and building materials. He said the site, which slopes toward the lake, also contributes large amounts of sediment into Vermilion during heavy rainfall. “We need to better manage the stormwater,” said Kelling. “Currently, a lot of sediment and other things end up in the lake when it rains.” Schmidt questions whether the change will be an improvement, since the DNR’s reconstruction of the site will convert the existing grassy hillside that currently serves as the site’s parking lot into a paved parking area. Kelling said the parking area will be leveled before being paved and that stormwater will be directed into one of two planned stormwater ponds in order to contain sediment. Schmidt claims the ponds will become a mosquito breeding ground. Kelling said he expects the final design will be completed soon and he is expecting to hold an open house in early summer so interested users can see what’s planned for the site. He expects actual construction to begin sometime in October if all goes as planned. That initial work will include blasting of some underlying bedrock in order to level the site. But most of the work will take place in 2026, he said, and during that period, it may be difficult to maintain public use of the site, although he said use of the site by barges should still be possible, with potentially some minor delays. But he said other users of the site may want to explore other access options for that summer. Kelling said he hopes to have more information on that at the open house later this year. “A goal of the open house is to really share the timeline and alternatives for users,” he said. “They might need to park somewhere else in 2026.”

Agreed, but I had a bit of a technicality and had to change.   You!  🤣
    • CigarGuy
I think once you guess your date, that should be it. If you can change right up to their date, that kind of takes the fun out of it.....in my humble opinion! Let vote on it!😀
