eyepatrol
There isn't hardly anything more painful to me than not being able to go out fishing on a day such as today. Never mind that I haven't been fishing in well over a month....that's bad in itself. But when the sun is shining, there's a nice light breeze and the high is going to be 70 or a little better and I haven't been out in the boat since last year, the painful realization of being anchored at work (or at home) goes straight to the core of my fishing soul. Best I can go is just bite my lip and put the thought of being out in the boat out of my mind. The reality of it though.....that just ain't gonna happen! Days like this are a love/hate thing for me. I love the awesome weather conditions......I hate that I can't enjoy it from inside the boat out on the lake!

JimBuck
I feel your pain. I find it to be especially difficult early in the spring when I try to work long hours to satisfy the "gear lust" before the season starts. Using today as an example, I drove into work early to get a few more hours on the clock and on my way in I probably drive past 5 different rigs on the highway(all driven by what appeared to be very eager, happy fisherman). I typically don't see more than 1-2 on any day this time of year...but 5!? I thought to myself "Is this some kind of sick joke?" The idea of calling in sick passes through your mind for a moment before you snap out of it and realize, you've just arrived at work."
eyepatrol
I hear ya Jim! I just got the boat out of storage and back in the garage yesterday. Now she sits there just staring at me every time I come home and open the garage door. She aint too happy with me right now leaving her all alone in the garage on the trailer. Her heart belongs on the water as does her owner's! Okay, enough speaking in the 2nd person.
jwhjr
I still have new rods to rig, tackle to organize and a new trolling motor and depth finder to install. I'm hoping that will occupy my weekend coming up. If I had everything ready I'd be in the same boat (no pun intended) as eyepatrol.

Wish-I-Were-Fishn
Took the day off and went out for the first time this season. Wind was strong, but the sun was warm. Everything worked great. (thanks Sea Foam!) Sorry to say I started the season the same way I ended it last year. Zelch in the livewell! Sometimes dreaming is more productive! Guess I'll have to hang in there until the warms a bit.

polarsusd81
Well upon return from the lake last night, my hands smelled like fish and my buddy and I had 4 gills and 2 crappies to clean up. Didn't need to take a lot, but just a few for the table. Great night to be on the water. I got the shorts and sandals out before we hit the water. Ahh, open water. EYESTALKER
Boy, I can relate. BUT, I had the opportunity to hook er up and head down to Red Wing yesterday. Fished for 4 to 5 hours. At one point as I was motoring through the endless no-wake zones in town and I just sat back and took it all in. Eagles soaring up in the air, people busily cleaning up their river boats for spring/summer, everybody I'm passing is all smiles having not been on the soft water in 6 months. Would rather have been there than anywhere else. Except, I should have brought my catching rods, instead of just my fishing rods !

Northlander, what all goes into "smelting"? Well you will need a siegn net and 2 guys to pull it. You walk out into the lake on a sandy beach and pull the net back towards shore. In rivers you just dip net. I just did a podcast with Dietz about smelting check it out. Some good info. If your around Duluth in the next couple weeks let me know and we will show you how its done. They are very tastey in a beer batter or whatever you like. Like Shiner said they are great washed down with some South Shore Nut Brown and yes the B S flows freeely while smelting.
