I have been up in the reef area a few times this month. Had really good luck once with some quality fish, and slow the other times. Doesn't seem to be the numbers of fish that you would expect up there. More numbers on the south end to chase it seems. It should start to pick up, but who knows. It has been slow overall, but I'm starting to hear a few more good things as of late. Good Luck

Ranger20 I'll bet I personally have thrown back a dozen fish short of the 30 mark this past year. I kept it and brought it to the Taxidermist up there (a guy I know)

Do you know how much a Replica costs?

I'm blue collar buddy

Make sure your Vex is in tip top shape. We had many Aggressive Big Walleye's 10 to 15 feet off of the bottom in 31 to 34 feet.

Anyone thats keeps and kills a walleye over 24inches is a fishing pig, and stupid with replicas that can be make today. The cost difference is not that much considering the life of such a fish. Other opinions?

Its his choice to keep it and do what he wants with. Would I keep it? No. Will I rip on him for doing so? No. Doesnt matter what I think. His fish, his choice. I killed a 7 lb bass about 10 years ago and wish I had put it back now. Replicas are the way to go but some people like the real thing. Does that mean it wrong? No. Just because you think its wrong, does that mean its wrong fpr everyone? No. Its just your opinion.

Yeah... Who are you to tell someone what they can and cant keep within the law? I'm sure thats not the only fish that big in their.... In fact I'm sure their may be some BIGGER! Its a great fishery that is simply HUGE!

Calling someone a "fishing pig" for keep a trophy fish within the laws is shallow and you should feel ashamed!

I believe you and anyone who agrees with you is simply jealous and ignorant.

Does it always gotta be a Pi-s-sin match in here?! Hey if the guy wants to keep it,"then let the guy keep it!" If you dont like it, keep it to yourself! I'm sure that eye made his day, week, or even month! Atleast he's mountin it. I know a guy that ate two 10lb Eyes! No joke..."He Ate them hogs and enjoyed every bite"!

Congrats on that Pig Wingding!

Fisned over by wigwams houses the last 2 days very poor fishing only little saugers then went over to Pine in 32 to 33 ft and we pounded the eyes a lot of suspended fish over there. i personally do not like going over where they put there houses seems like it is always VERY slow over there.

losthikingguide is outta his mind. First of all, who is he to be telling anyone what to do with their fish? He was within his right and within the law. That is why they say 1 over 28" or whatever the slot is on your favorite lake. For this guy to be calling names is really not cool. Bet he wouldn't have the sack to walk into that guys living room and tell him it is a waste of a fish and that he is a pig. Don't be the big man behind the computer...just keep your mouth shut. Maybe if we all did like Thumper the rabbits mom said, dont say anything if you dont have anything nice to say. BTW, what happened to keeping thing positive around here?

Like everyone else has said. Who are you to say. As far as the cost, YES THERE IS A BIG COST DIFFERENCE!!! Just a good blank can cost as much as a skin mount before any paint is put on it. Also when I get a mount done, I want a mount of the fish I caught, not the molded blank of someone elses fish.

Nobody really cares, do what you want with the fish and keep your mouths shut...

Was out of morris point and got drifted in by the storm, if planning on going far of the road you will need a snowmobile again. The day before we could drive anywhere and we where fishing the ice. Morris point could only plow a road about 25 yrds from the house before they gave up and left us to shovel the rest, thankfully somone from cyrus was able to help us get the trucks and house back on the road. Fishing was good caught eyes from 17FOW to 34FOW had 8 bonus jumbos also!

Hi all, I have an all wheel drive truck and if I was to put on chains would I be able to get around better on the big lake or do you really need to have a sled.

The weekend of Jan 16-18 I pulled my 6.5x12 wherever I wanted with my 4x4 and rear tire chains. A lot has changed since then.

I would have to believe that the warm temps/rain had to settle most of the old snow and with the cold temps now it should be froze pretty solid. The problem probably is the new snow drifting up all of the previous ice roads.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯

I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st

As I get older it's really not just about sending bullets down range.  Some of it's just the workmanship of the gun and the wow factor. The other two guns I have really wanted which I'll never have now because of their price, is a 8mm Jap Nambu and 9mm German Luger.   Just thought they always looked cool!

I had a guy hit me with a lightly used 1969 BAR, he wanted $1650 with an older Leupold scope. More than I think they are worth, I made an offer, he declined end of story.   You know if you look at the old brochures, a grade II BAR sold for $250 in the late 60s, $1650 would be a good return on your investment.    Why would anybody want a 50 year old gun, they are heavy, have wood stocks, and blued metal.  I guess mainly to keep their gun safes glued to the floor. lol   You can probably buy a stainless rifle that you never have to clean, with a synthetic stock you never have to refinish, is as light as a feather, and for half as much money, perfect.   I'm too old for a youth gun, although I've shrunk enough that it would probably fit. lol   No Ruger 10/44s.   Jim
