Recommended Posts

I saw some people fishing spoon lake in st.paul, i was wondering if they were catching anything, and what types of fish are in that lake. It looked like fun!

Spoon is a great early Crappie hotspot. If you catch them right after breeding season, you can catch some pretty big size... theres alot of good bottom structure around the shoreline.. goodluck!!

hmmmm...labeling a 6 acre lake a great crappie spot on an internet board visited by thousands of fishermen. Well another one bites the dust...

Yea, there are a lot of people down there fishing. You're talking spoon between Keller and Gervious right? I'm sure those fish head out deeper after the spawn.

Spoon is definitely not a secret. I have seen both sides of the shorelines lined shoulder to shoulder (literally) on weekends for years and years. Besides, it is connected to alot of other water...gervais, kohlman, keller, phalen.

I'd agree that Spoon isn't a secret. It's been one of the first early open water spots from shore as long as I can remember.

I'm 90% Norwegian, so if you see me fishing, please refer to me as the Scandinavian gentleman. Thank You.

Like another poster said...crappies early, it only last a little while and has been going on for many many years, but every year people keep coming back to the same spot and lining the banks. The bait shops tell you to go here for early action. And yet, success has not ruin the spot. It's like they use that small channel to move from lake to lake only in the spring and then go into hiding later. You will very seldom see numbers fishing later in the summer, unless it is a family picnicing and shore fishing to pass the time.

I don't think this was originally meant to be racial, at least I didn't take it that way. Maybe in the future just say a guy had a nice stringer full of fish. I'm not pointing at anyone particular, some take PC to a real high level and it is on the internet. Plus what you type isn't always construed how you meant to say it. Emails and interenet posts get misinterpreted all the time.

Will this cold weekend turn off the fish? The weather postponed my trip to the vermillion river, but I'd still like to get a couple hours on the water since the vikings don't have a 1st round pick.

I'd give it a shot if I could. The way I figure, if you're out fishing it can't be all bad... grin.gif

Well, waking up to snow, WIND, and 35 degree temps turned me off from giving it a try. If I'm too lazy to drive to the vermillion river on tuesday, I'll probably stop by spoon/gervais/keller/kohlman.

One quick question...if I have my motor out of the water and the gas line disconnected, would I be able to go down the creek and fish round/phalen?

I see bigger boats fishing Phalen once in a while with their gas motors out of the water. I think you could use a gas motor rigged watercraft there but the motor can not be in the water. Phalen is a perfect lake to explore. Good luck

I've fished phalen a few times with my 21' boat. I beleive as long as you do not turn on your gas motor it's fine. I leave my motor down for drag control. Up or down, it doesn't make any difference since it's not being used. It's just better boat control with it down.

You don't need to unhook your gas line. You don't even need to take it out of the water I don't believe. When I fish Phalen, I put the moter up just cause you can hit some shallows. Just use the trolling moter and you are fine.

JB, there is a dam that you would have to drag your boat over right before round/phalen, you would be better off trailering and relaunching at phalen.

for launching at phalen, there is only 1 ramp on the NW section of the lake right? I thought there was a sign there which said something to the effect that you couldnt launch a water craft that required a trailer.. or something weird like that?

no, there is a paved ramp on the northwest side, that you can launch almost any size boat at. The only regulation on phalen is that you can only use electric motors
