i'm kinda new to the area, and was wondering if twin lakes off of 100 is worth trying?

Posted

I used to live in the beach south apartments on the east side of 100 and we actually had a private boat landing on lower twin. there used to be some fair bluegill and northern fishing in middle twin lake. If your looking at the lake from the landing(middle twin)....go to your right (north) and fish the far end of the lake and its weed line. Most of the sunfish that I caught there were pretty small. But that was 4 years ago. I have no idea on what the road construction did to the lake either and how it fairs today but always worth a shot.

In case you didn't know, as stated by the prior respondent, Twin Lakes actually consists of 3 lakes. When on Hwy 100 you can only see two of the lakes. The south lake is prettyb shallow except for a couple of deeper holes and people rarely fish it. The northern lake is very shallow and only worth a try in spring. The middle lake is loaded with crappie (small to medium), a few sunnies, and a fair number of small to medium pike. There are two areas that are good. Early can be good near the highway in 15-20 feet with waxies or very small minnows or minnow heads. If you want to fish with the crowds, try the north end in 20-25 feet. The pike are right in with the crappie and I've had great success dropping a tip-up in the same 20-25 feet while fishing crappie. I usually use a tail hooked shiner and keep it 2-3 feet off of the bottom. Bring electronics and move often. The fish seem to bite right away and then get bored. You move, same result. Most guys drill 2 holes and stay there all day. Unless the fish are on-fire, you need to move every 15-45 minutes. I just moved from Brooklyn Center and have fished the lake many times. I hope the info helps. Good luck!

I grew up fishing Twin. It was pretty good back in the day. We used to catch 5lb pike off the dock. Ok everything was off the dock. We caught some nice bass, dog fish, sunnys, and bullheads, bullheads, and more bullheads.

My friend and I fished it a few times when we were older and I wouldn't waste my time anymore, but we were going for bass and pike.

Just my .02

I have to agree with Ebass i wouldn't waste my time on twin lake when u have med. or eagle close by. I'm surprised that there r fish in there any more after all that construction. My personal belief is that, that lake is fished out of any decent fish.

the forth lake next to twin and connected by a very shallow creek is Ryan Lake. it's nestled back behind the railroad bordering mpls and robbinsdale and a section of brooklyn center. it has Big Northerns and a few decent sized panfish. in the middle its maybe 20 ft. deep. i lived on Osseo Rd in the 80's and i'd try this lake again! probably noone else there!SSSSSSSShhhhhhhhhhhhh!

crappiemagnet- I live right by this lake and because people BLABBED about this little 19 acre lake guys in droves came and kept bucket fulls of 9-10 inch crappies and 8-9 inch sunfish. It winterkilled 3 years back so all the decent northerns, I said decent because I have never seen a big northern come out of that lake, were killed. 3 years ago I was alone fishing that lake and then 2 years ago I was out there with 30 other guys keeping there limits of fish on a 19 acre lake...EVERYDAY. They fished it out in one winter. Nope know you wont be the only one out there anymore, everytime I drive by there is at least 3-4 portables out there catching and keeping 6-8 inch little crappies. Sometimes there are 7 portables out there. If you want to catch 6 inch crappies and hammerhandle pike go to RYAN LAKE IN ROBBINSDALE. THE WORD IS OUT. I SAID RYAN LAKE IN ROBBINSDALE PLEASE COME AND KEEP EVERYTHING YOU CATCH. The only thing we need is more publicity for ryan lake in robbinsdale, oh I forgot to tell you my fav. spot to fish is the west side in 20 feet of water, the fish are suspended about 8-15 feet down. Keep your limits everyday I dont even care anymore, dynamite the lake. It has gone the way of everyother lake around here, first Twin, then crystal and now ryan there isent any good fishing around here anymore. And if I see you go through the guys yard on the west end of the lake because you saw me go through there I will call the police amediatly for tresspassing. Its not public property and I have permission you dont. There is a park on the east side and its not a far walk to the west side. The only thing this guy needs is everyone and there brother tresspassing on his land and parking in front of his house. I already yelled at people for this in the past but now I got a cell phone for christmass so I will notify the authorities.

You are so right RS. This lake used to be a hidden Gem, but now it is way over fished. You'll have a hard time catching anything over 8 inches. I can't believe those people on the west side keep all those fish. I believe they even live on the lake and rape it the way they do, its discusting.
BTW all of these lakes are dangerously polluted. There are signs around middle Twin at the dead end road where there used to be a walk on access now its fenced off. Ryan lake had a fertlizer plant on it and there were accidents.

fishfearme- Yea about 15 years ago a bunch of fertalizer got dumped into the lake and there is alot of street runoff, not very clean. I know one guy that lives on the lake and fished it but he c&r's only. There are people that live in those apartment buildings that come out everyday and keep there limits it disgusts me. Most of the people that fish it though dont actually live real close to the lake. I called the DNR and proposed an all catch and realease regulation for this lake on all species but they said since it winterkilled every 5-6 years they wouldent do it but I told him about the people that live on the lake and keep there limit everyday and that they had to be way over there possesion limts and he said he would check the lake more often.

It's kind of sad. The two lakes I loved the most in this state are Mille Lacs and Burntside.  And I think we broke them both!  😕

Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.
