Will Winnie be ice-free

Recommended Posts

I am beginning to wonder if Winnie will be ice free on the opener!!!!! Not panicing yet but, when is the latest ice out in recent history anyway? We have a cabin in Squaw Lake rented for the 3 day opener week end, what would be other alternatives, thanks.

Barring a big cold snap, it will be open. If not, just fish Round Lake.

I have fished Winnie on opener for the last 22 years or so and only once was there ice still on parts of the lake and that was Tammarack bay only. We have had snow still on the ground but never had ice issues. At least we didn't have to mow the cabin yard. Now I am hearing the ticks may be bad this year.

It's gonna be cold for the next week. Uh-oh!!!

I'll be chiseling a path fron Nodak's to the mouth of Cutfoot!!!!!

The ticks were already out as of last weekend. What helps control tick populations? Wet weather? The deer ticks were bad last fall and seem to be strating where they left off.

Can you swing by Highbanks when your breakin ice and open a path for me Fishing Lifetime. There goes our BOTCHE BALL game for this year. We play from the cabin to Highbanks for a Highbanks famous Bloody Mary. I think the ticks may win this year. We shall see. Any reports at all about the ice conditions or hopefully lack there of.

Sure, when you see the guy waving a chisel in the air, walk on out & jump in!

Good I will be the one in a snowmobile suit and carring an Auger and vexi, with a couple of short rods.

Ok, I'll toot the horn too, because if I'm gonna chisel my way across Winnie in my boat, I'll do it as the Crow flies - no veering towards Highbanks. You'll just have to walk out to me... grin.gif

That might be possible, at this rate. We were going up this weekend, but changed my mind. We will have to wait until next weekend, when the ice will be firmer. Maybe the snow will hurt the woodticks somehow. Thinking about installing ice breakers on the boat.

Here's the problem.

It suppose to be cold later in the week & the weekend with the high only around 40.

The ice ain't gonna melt too fast...

Yes, the narrows will be full of boats.

But, now that there's more spawning grounds around the lake, it may not be necessary to go there.

Since I'm staying at Nodak's, thinking about trying around Little Stony Point right there.

Around Ravens was good on opener last year, but of course, this year is different.

I do know if it's cold and the water temp is 39 or so, if history repeats itself, they will be deeper...

Third river flowage schould be a hot bite. I would say anywhere there is current a guy schould be able to find a fish. I hope the ice is off by early next week.

I wonder if the DNR will close off part or all of Cutfoot and Third River...?

I'm sure from Williams Narrows east will be closed like in '96. Jeez that was a mess.

Is there any thawing at all, the narrows or the river on the south end?

Any word on the Stripping operations. Have they started. Heard they were setting up, but that is all. I heard some ice piling up on the south shore. ITS GOING TO BE A COLD OPENER. Probally be able to fish some winter spots.

I heard that the plan is that Little Cutfoot will be closed for fishing from Williams Narrows toward Little Cutfoot. My B in Law talked to someone from the DNR to confirm that. Winnie may be ice free by then, but that would be pushing it. It just isn't suppposed to be very warm in the next few days. If that is the case...Big Cutfoot will be absolutely a zoo. At least there is a slot on Winnie now...in '96 there were a pile of females that were kept..if I remember right. Pray for warmer weather and no darn snow

If Big Cutfoot is a zoo...Where might be a good place to start?

I was thinking all the shallow water on the west side of the lake, but who knows. Maybe I'll go up into Sugar, and go crappie fishing.

I am heading up for the opener and staying at Beckers Resort. This is my first time, does anybody have some suggestions on a good place to start fishing?

The resort your staying at will have the latest info. With this years late late late late ice out it will be different and very cold water. Don't be afraid to try deeper than normal. The GAP is a traditional stop for many many boats.

GaryC, I would be willing to bet that around Mallard point will be good as well. Look for anywhere close to where they were spawning. As someone else mentioned, you might want to try 10+ feet of water if you cant find them shallow.

Finally made it back up to Vermilion after 20 days off.  The ice out from McKinley Park was in very good condition.  I walked out 5/8 mile with my portable in the morning and I didn't find any water or slush on the ice.  I had 14 inches of ice with only the top 1 inch being white.  The ice was a little bumpy in spots and smooth and slick in others.  Snow cover was less than 50 % as shown in the pictures below, looking back at the landing and out from the bay.  Many full size pickups were driving all over and there were a lot of larger wheel houses out.  I hauled my small skid house out with my side-by-side in the afternoon and was very happy to be in it after dark when the wind really started to pick up.  Felt bad for the portables around me that were picking up in those conditions.  When I drove off just before 7pm, the drifts were getting much bigger and there was much more bare ice than earlier in the day.   Fishing was quite good in the morning.  Best bite was between 915 and 1045.  The walleyes preferred the smaller rainbows and chubs and wouldn't touch a very large rainbow and shiner that I tried for a while.  The walleyes were quite small with the biggest being only 14 inches.  I did manage to catch a 29 inch northern, my biggest pike in many years.   Good luck fishing, enjoy the lake, and please pick up your trash.

For sound to return doesn't it need like, well a chamber, hills, valleys. 🤔 The Internet?    Um, sorry there's no hot redheads on this site screaming out in the wilderness for you!!

Anyone on here fishing Niles Point with a couple of kids last weekend?  You might want to let them know that the 'echo' they returned from across the lake has gone viral!    https://www.instagram.com/reel/DEQJ6lmxco0/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet   As of right now, 2.6 million views on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok...and climbing.  I feel happy when my posts on this board gets 12 likes! lol

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.

Thanks for reminding me to make sure that one is in the fish house!  It’s tradition that we watch that on the first trip every year.
