Well for me its a thinner spoon of some type, or an airplane jig on the rod I'm jigging. Gold, Perch, or pink/wht. Reverse jig usually in either gold or pink/wht, or a plain hook on a deadstick or bobberrod. Same routine as I've used the past few winters.
I have yet to have much luck using those little glo-stix. They do work great to lite up your icebuster bobber though!
Fisky
[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 02-24-2003).]

When there are fish around that are even
alittle agressive the pink and white AE jr
or the all glow red Glow Devil are on my
jiggin rod.
On the rod with the Ice Buster
Bobber a jig or a plain hook. (why dont we
jig with both lines?).
I would change if I saw something work much
better. On the days I need to keep changing
lures the fish arent around or are not biting
and it has never made a huge difference in
triggering fish to make a change.
The most important part is to be around the
fish when they are agressive. (sounds simple
enough)

Curt Quesnell

Action of the lure is much more important then color. Watching the fish on your electronics, and then messing with them till they hit. That is the key. Flutter type spoons seem to work the best for me. I keep colors in my box very simple, and I'll out fish a tackle grabber 9 times out of 10. They spend too much time out of the water trying to find the magic bullet. 90 percent of the time, I'm only fishing one hole also, Again I like to be in the water 99 percent of the time. How many times have you been all messed up and out of the water cause you are trying to keep two lines active when the fish are really going?

Widetrack, what type of flutter spoons are you talking about, size, thickness? At diff. times i've been using a NL rattle spoon, jigging rap, zip l. and home concockted spoon with a dropper with neuclius jig. All have worked.
------------------
Old Guide Charters
Lake of the Woods
http://fishingminnesota.com/oldguidecharters/
Call Toll Free:1-800-952-(9484)

My favorite is the West river Sutton spoon.
SUT29B Solid brass 3" lenth, 3/4" body width.
The large AE would be my second favorite.

Hey Pat, I know he like AE's and Sutton spoons. Those Sutton spoons are simular in thickness/shape to those Stinger Scorpions I'm so partial to come mid-summer trolling. I had good luck using Scorpions early ice when I was fishing shallow water over near Pine and plan on using them again once I'm back in shallower water yet this year. I'd probably use them more often out in deep water but they sink oh so slow! Other fluttery spoons I like are Phoebes and Williams Wabblers.
Where's Widetrack, sorry bud I chimed in! Correct me if these are'nt a couple of your favs though!
Regards....Fisky

My post is right above yours!
For deep water the 2/3 ounce little cleo drops like a rock, but still has a nice wobble/flutter.
[This message has been edited by widetrack (edited 02-25-2003).]

Yes indeed I saw that when I posted, we were typing at the same time I reckon!

These "Suttons" and "Scorpions" are they in ice fishing sections of bait shops/stores? Where can you pick 'em up?

Posted

Thanks widetrack, Fisky, just came back from your town this pm. Looks like a trip to the boat for those scorpions. You'd better go with the wife to GF. you may need the "points" later!!!!

Old Guide
No way am I going, are you kidding it would break my heart to see her spending all her hard earned bonus money anywhere but Cabelas or Scheels! Grab those spoons outta your boat next time and give them a try, they do work well at times. I figure you and I must be about the only folks that have any of those around these parts maybe?
Hammer-Smites, those spoons mentioned were originally designed for Trout/Salmon trolling. I think the Suttons are no longer produced and I have no idea where you may find any. Scorpions are the smaller version of the original Michigan Stinger spoons. These are very popular Trout/Salmon trolling baits on the Great lakes and the smaller {scorpion} version has caught on bigtime with Walleye anglers out in the Great Lakes region. I have never seen them anywhere in Mn. I pick them up by the dozens when I'm in Michigan doing tournaments in the summer. You may be able to find them on-line somewhere though. Tackle stores around Duluth could have them as theres that Trout and Salmon fishery out there?
These spoons are thin....Thinner than a credit card and have a action that has to be seen to do them any justice in a description.
Fisky

Fisky:
Sutton spoons a very much alive and well.
I have a source for them, but I'm sure if I post it, it will get zinged for advertising.
(not complaining, I understand)...

I always have a "West River" Sutton spoon on one line. Silver/Brass is my color of choice. They can be hard to find, I was in Cabela’s in EGF over Christmas and all the sales people in the fishing dept that I talked to had never heard of them. Wade at Streiffs in Warroad worked for a couple of weeks and finally was able to get some in January, I think they still have some.

OOPS...Did I do something wrong?

Posted

Well I stand corrected and thats good cause I want some. If you would e-mail me those directions WT I'd appreciate it. I'm gonna hit Streiff's and see iffin they have any left. I do have 2 Suttons that I picked up at an auction sale in an old tackle box some years back, they look to be 40 or 50 years old as was most of the other tackle in that box!
Wife set me up my own e-mail cause she's getting tired of all the fishing stuff coming on hers. E-mail thru my IP is unsatisfactory and unreliable
fiskyknut at yahoo.com, Coool!

You could type in "Sutton + Spoons" in your internet search engine and come up with lots of stuff. Just ordered a few.
Thanks Fisky.
-Tim

Thank Widetrack for that particular spoon, he's praised them for quite a while. I did that search, and I am going to order soon. Also caught an auction on HSO-Classifieds late last nite and have three coming.
Fisky
[This message has been edited by fiskyknut (edited 02-26-2003).]

Oh yeah....thanks Wide Track!
Hey Fisky, Based off of earlier conversation, I assume you're a Polaris employee?? I live in Osceola where their other manufacturing plant is.

I welded there some years back for a few years, I'm now self/under employed. My wife is still there though. We are heading out right now for some supper and I'm gonna hit Streiff's to see if they have any Sutton spoons, someone mentioned they did a while back anyways.
Back later....fisky

Pop ups have increased for me for a while now. Timed to cover my usual taps about the time I would tap.

So there is a boat on a friend's property, has been there for about 4 years, with no contact from owner, and she is unreachable. It was last registered in 2020. Is there any way for him to make it his, legally?
    • fishingstar
I'm getting a lot of popups adds. Just wondering if it's just my computer or is every one getting them?

Birds at home have been quiet and out of sight. Not sure where they went. Last year they wouldn’t respond to calls - until they did. But that will be common until the girls quit being friendly.

I've seen about 60 turkeys in 1.5 days of hunting thus far. Unfortunately they are not responding to calls or decoys and the only birds that have walked within range are hens. It's just a waiting game now. Deer hunting for turkeys, hoping a legal one walks past before I have to quit in a few days...

A bunch of webcams available these days to see progress as well: https://lakevermilionresorts.com/webcams/ Looks to be pulling away from shore. I expect ice out between next Friday and Sunday based on temps in the forecast. Some sun and then some wind would get it going quickly.

But wait Meg, there's more! Anyway, do you like fishing? Trolling's kind of fun! 🤭
    • leech~~
Well lol, Google is your friend! 🤭 Yes, the 2012 movie "Loon Lake" was filmed in Minnesota. Specifically, it was shot in southwest Minnesota, with locations including Round Lake, Pioneer Village, and Jackson County. The film is also based on a local legend from southwest Minnesota about a witch who lived by Loon Lake.
    • leech~~
Well indeed there is a movie and the trailer will help you near down the 25 lakes a lot by just checking into the Loon Lakes in Southwest, MN. Should be easy now. Have fun. Eager to escape the grief and nightmares of the city, Louis Olsen travels to Southwest Minnesota, seeking the peace of the rural countryside. When he accidentally disturbs the grave of a supposed local 'witch' Mary Jane Terlinden, what began as a peaceful reprieve unravels into a haunting nightmare from which Louis cannot escape - but is it all just in his head?

Great. That's usually a good sign for ice break-up.
