Minnetonka Public Access

Recommended Posts

I have only been in the cities a year now. I fished Tonka once in 99' but would like to start fishing it more. Question if you all, which of the accesses on the lake are free and on the south side what are the fees at the ramps? Which ones are good to use during the week or weekend. Which ones do you have to be there early to get a spot at or are so far away from the fishing its not worth it? Which ramps are for the skiers?

Thanks for any advice.

Good Luck and be safe.

I prefer Gray's Bay access on the south/east side, also Three Rivers Parks has a decent ramp on the west side.

I can't post a link for you, but if you Google lake minnetonka boat ramps, you will get a map and the list.

Most ramps on weekends, you will need to get there early. Weekdays, not an issue.

I don't fish Minnetonka enough to tell you which ones are best to use on week or weekends (you might not get that information from those that don't want their favorite ramp filling up). But when I worked at the accesses, they'd fill up pretty quick, especially on weekends. Fishingwise, your best bet is to get there early because #1 you get a spot and #2 you beat the recreational traffic.

Thank you for the replys. Is there one ramp that is on the south side of the lake and is free that you would recommend?

Surfside in Mound is free, parking for maybe 8 to 10 boats and also parking available in the street. Weekdays you can park in the access lot, weekends and holiday you can't, but can park on the street.

Gray's Bay is closest to the Cities, is free and is the biggest. 3 wide, fairly new concrete ramp. If you're coming from just about anywhere in town East of the lake, it is easy to get to. From the south get to Hwy 7 to 101 North, It's on 101 just after the jog in the road. Or you can take 394 to the Wayzata (101 S) exit and just stay straight on 101. Busy on weekends like all Tonka ramps from Memorial day on, but if you get there early, the 3 lanes make it fast even if there is a line. The only downside is if you're looking to fish Upper Lake, it's a bit of a ride since it's you'll be on the far East side. I'm not familiar with the Tonka ramps that are maintained by Three River's park district but I do know that the fee is $5/day or a season pass is $30 (I usually get one of those for other lakes I fish). If you do want to put in a little further west there are two decent ramps on Maxwell and North Arm. 394 to 15 to N Shore. They're not south - sorry. If I had to pick one, it'd be Gray's. If it's busy the upside is you stand a good chance of coming home with a whopper of a launch story - I've seen people do some of the funniest things there.

All I know is dont go off your GPS if you are looking for landings. I checked most of the landings on the east, north, and west sides, just a few weeks ago, going off what my GPS said were public accesses, you'll be suprised how many are gated off or are just for the neighborhood to use. They will have no parking signs all over or have a sign that says no "parking without trailer".

Is the access in cook's bay an "actual" access then? And why is it only open for trailer parking during the week?

Yes

Very small parking lot, next to apartments or townhomes, and a park with a beach. It's so small it would only take 10 or so vehicles with trailers to fill it up. Guys that use it on the weekend park their rigs on the street, usually quite a ways down from the access.

Well luckily for me I'll be going there during the week. Probably gonna be a little more time for the ice to go and the water to warm for the crappies though?

The problem is that when its warm and even if you head out early when you try to load your boat you will usually find an hour wait on weekend non crappy days.

Sometimes it pays to find out of the way accesses. 3 rivers is a good ramp, for the west end of the water. Find a ramp close to where you plan on fishing.

i guess it matters on what your fishing for. I access through halstads bay area and i dont go to far from there and fishings great! The main access by the park i believe you have to pay and should be easy to get in now but give it a month or a couple weeks at that matter and she will be full!!!! just concentrate on what you will be fishing for and the closest structure and then you can determine your access point. less gas+good fishing= a great day.

I'm just glad the ramp I use primarily hasn't been mentioned yet...:-) Seriously though, Tonka is one lake I really try to get to early, and avoid the ramp-orama fun.

Crazy, I've heard of lighting strikes doing that.  I wonder if they have some proof of intentional lighting?

Hunt the west end of Mille Lacs area in public land.  We had 5 hunters...I missed a med buck, and my buddy shot 2 bucks, that we shall say were not very old.  decent and got meat on the table, but the bigguns were not showing up.  We only saw 1 doe being chased by a small buck at dark...I did have something bound away when I was packing up last night.  Overall another wild opening weekend with some situations that happened that only happen when you are out in the woods and a bunch of other "hunters" are out with you.  Example as we were leaving the woods on Saturday the local fire department was there putting out a fire that they say was started due to some "hunters" starting the hollow trees on fire to smoke out porcupines, racoons, possums, and squirrels.  Apparently this is the 3rd fire in the past 2 weeks in the area, and they were threatening to shut the area down to hunters for the season!  We were wondering why a large trail had been cut through the woods to an area that was burnt deep into the swamps and oak ridges.  Find out that was a fire from a few weeks earlier!!  Unreal

Your rut thoughts sound pretty much dead on.  I have a buddy with 220 acres of land in center, mn and last year they had 5 very nice bucks on opening weekend and got nothing this year so far.  He thinks it's to warm still.

I’ve got plenty of photos over the past week but no tag filled.  I only saw 3 that I thought were worth a stalk with the bow in SD.  None worked out for one reason or another.  The two guys I went with both got smaller bucks.   Did 2 days archery in the 172 before boom stick season opened, then 2 days of that.  Had over 20 sightings; all but 2 were does and fawns.  The two others were a spike and fork.  I’m waiting on an adult.   Some shots were fired close to me but overall the amount shooting seemed to be down.  Friends in the area saw mostly does and fawns also but few bucks and let ‘em walk cuz they were small.  Sounds like that might be the one free pass they got though.   The bucks are there but not chasing yet.  Cameras show them at night.  Fawns are all with does yet.  This thing called the rut is still at a simmer based on what we’ve been seeing.

I was spared all but the last 2:47 of the game.  That was painful enough to watch.  My wife said the whole game was like that.  Glad I stayed in the deer stand.

It's been a month since I posted a fishing report, so thought I would share our results this past weekend.  The water temperature has dropped to as low as 41° in the shallow bays, though some of the deeper bays were still at 45.     Friday night and Saturday Jeff and I targeted walleyes and caught 95 of them with 13 over the slot, the biggest being a couple of 27 1/2"ers.  All of them were caught casting and all of them were released.  One of our 'overs' struck a 6 inch swimbait so violently that it blew the bait completely through her gills, where the lone treble hook stuck on the outside of the fish, halfway down her body.  Amazing...    On Sunday we targeted smallmouth bass and got 54 of them, with a handful in the 4 pound class though most were in the 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pound class. We also caught a musky and a 26 1/2 inch walleye as a bonus by-catch while bass fishing.  That musky picked up a little finesse jig/craw worked on bottom in 20 feet of water.   All in all, it was time well spent on beautiful Lake Vermilion.  To do that with my son made the trip that much more special..

Nothing?  No one got a deer, saw a deer or heard a deer?  Know someone who got a deer or know someone that knows someone who got a deer this year?     I didn't go for one of the first years since I was 14, just no sign up where we hunt to give and effort.

Jeez, John Parker Romo never played in the NFL or with the Vikings and he walks on and saves the day!  I thinking he's a full time employee now!
