I'm picking up a canoe in a couple of weeks. My 5 year old is really in love with bass fishing! Could you folks suggest any canoe friendly waters where my son and I could troll/paddle around and catch a few? Smallmouth and Largemouth...

Also, what are some good sections of the St. Louis and/or Cloquet Rivers to do some casting?

Thank you!

Jason

Jayson, there are alot of lakes you could fish for Bass around the Duluth area. The biggest problem is bigger boats flying around all day and you in a canoe. Try Nichols Lake lots of Large Bass, and pan fish to keep the little one happy, and not alot of other boats on it.

We park at Chambers Grove park and put our canoe in under the Hwy 23 bridge. Especially during July and August it's great fun to fish for bass above the park where the river widens out. You can cast or even troll Heddon tiny torpedoes. I would paddle upstream from there and just let my daughter hang on to her rod as we'd meander upstream. The topwaters are nice--easy casting and snag free. My daughter has caught bass, northerns, and even a small musky doing this.

Jason you just got some great advice there. The 23 bridge area is loaded with smallies that time of year. Top waters, spinners, bobber and leech, jig n minnow all work. Watch out for them big toothy critters up there though. There bigger than that canoe. grin.gif

You may even snag a walleye or 2 up that way.

Jason,

grin.gifThe cloquet is good for bass in the summer when the water is low. I like to wade it, seem to do better. But I wouldn't take my kids down there because of the current and rocks. Actually the wife won't even go anymore for she always ends up falling. Maybe that's why i fish it so much grin.gif
