Be careful on Staring! the Purgatory creek flows through pretty good. I haven't been out there yet but the ice should be okay if you stay away from the creek.

Looked at the map. Is this a private lake? How can you access it?

Posted

There is an access to Staring on the north side of the lake at the end of a road. It is shown on the DNR map and is described as a carry in.

How about access to Red Rock?

Posted

Access to Red Rock is on the Southeast side of the lake just north of Cty Rd 1.

Never tried staring, but I know it winterkills periodically so the gills in there are good size if you can find them. Red Rock is great, but lots of people fishing usually. Been out once there this year, about 6 inches of ice, gills biting in about 12ft of water on waxies, crappies suspended half way down in same amount of water. My teacher was out the other day and experienced the same thing. Bluegills are number and size both, crappies tend to be small. Never seen a large crappie outa there yet. Some good pike action in the spot between the bays also. You will have a lot of other people fishing around you though, the word got out about the lake a few years ago, its been hit really hard since, and being only 90 acres I say its best days are past and the good times are numbered... Please catch and release the majority of your catch. Good Luck

Anyone been out on these lakes yet to give an ice and fishing report? Specifically on crops and gills? Going to try to go somewhere this weekend and always wanted to try one of these lakes and would like to know if it will be worth it.

Was out last year. Bluegill bite from 3pm to dusk, then they stopped and the crappies moved in.

Found them in about 8' of water. Moving to just a hole 15' away got me my bites. Otherwise I would have gotten nothing.

No giant fish, but fun to see the bobber go down. Waxies for sunfish, small minnows for crappies.

Hey lunker Staring lake doen't freeze out because the Purgetory creek flows through all year long. Unless we have a major droubt.

The post above is right about the word getting out on Red Rock a few years ago. Outdoor News said it was hot,the next thing you know, people are all over. It gets busy on the weekends, but if you can sneak out there during the week, you have the lake to yourself. Sunfish are always biting during the day, and it pays to set a tip-up for the pike. Drill a hole, and if you mark fish on your sonar, they'll bite.

well that is what the dnr has told me...

If I listened to what the DNR stated on their web site I wouldn't fishing half of the productive lakes that I do. (No ofense Lunker)

Barely had time and data to post a few random daily pics!  😄   Iffen you’re self banned, how’d ya know? 😉   Sunday - Tuesday hunt near Yankton, SD.  We found ourselves there between two of the big pushes north.  Adults first, pushing the ice line north, slipped through a couple days before we got there and the second juvie push held up by the storm that went through the night we traveled.  Our best day was Monday.  Sunny and warm with a nice south wind.  Day 3 was cool with a stiff northeast wind bringing in another storm.     A select few groups did well with birds coming off Lewis and Clark lake but we weren’t in their path.  We packed up early and hit the road.  We headed north and found them between Brookings and Watertown.  Saw 100’s of thousands at the ice line.

Crazy, about 50 Robin's hit our yard!  Not sure what their eating but none are in any of the neighbors yards around us?  Had to cut video down so it would run.  20250319_175454.mp4
