Commercial Rough Fish Harvest - Prescott

Does anyone know how I might find out when the big commercial rough fish harvest in Prescott is going on?

My boss told me that I have got to see this to believe it. Apparently, they are cathing species of fish that are 4-6 ft long.

Has anyone else seen this in person?

I guess it happens right around this time of year?

Sorry FFAL, I was busy all weekend with family matters and wasn't able to head down and check it out. I did see them do this on Peltier down in Centerville a few years back during the ice season and it was pretty neat to see. I can only imagine some of the denziens of the deep that they might catch on the river! Hoping to get down to the Croix this weekend, gotta pattern my gun and get ready for turkey season next week, hopefully the warmup will turn on the fish.

No problem! \:\)

This warm-up coming up should get things started. This waiting is driving me nuts!! Extra fishin' trips or more time on water is definitely in order............

I may hit the river this coming week or weekend.

If I was to get down there on Sat 4/19, do you think I'd be able to see them pull any nets?

I really want to see what they drag in, but don't want to drive 50 miles 1 way with a 1 year old for nothing.

Thanks for the information.

That ice pack is already gone, yesterday it looked like it would be a couple days before the ice would be out and they could get set up, looks like I'll have to take a drive down there in a day or to and have a look, last year I was talking to a couple of the guys doing it and they said "we caught lots of big eyes in the nets, some over 10lbs " I was surprised how well game fish are treated, I never saw one game fish floating, the guys that do it really make sure fish game fish aren't harmed. Hopefully someone around prescott can give us a heads up on the progress their making. cool.gif

they have the nets out there already, as of Sunday 4/12, they were pulling em in already, then I think they keep in nets til they get semi tractor n trailer with tanks on to load fish into, just not sure if they will do that today, or when, but ice is off river and just a lil bit of ice by beach. but they do do it for a few days or week or two!! I would think be the weeknd for sure they should be, I will be going over there maybe Wedensday, only 10 miles from here, might start to try Prscott.

Kingfisher and I went down there today. They weren't netting any but they had a ton in the hold net they set up. Cool to see all those 30lb carp. They thought it would be too windy to go out. Told use where they were pulling some monster eyes out of too.

FFAL, I was going to call you but it was sper of the moment decision to go. I don't think they are going to be culling until the weekend again from what they said.

porterhouse, there wasn't anything in the holding net but rough fish except for one eye they pulled out. I would assume they pull those out and they don't make it into the holding area. That's why it would be cool to see them culling.

It was really neat to see. All the buffalo, carp, sheepshead, and a few suckers in there. They said a few days ago, they were netting just north of Hudson and came up with a net pretty much full of walleyes from what they said.

They do get some nice muskies in the nets, which they release of course. Along with sturgeon, some real big smallmouth bass and walleyes. It's been about 6 yrs since I watched them pull their nets, but I don't remember any northerns.

FYI I heard all the rough fish harvested are shipped to the East Coast.

I heard from my friend that those fish are sold to places that make fish patties for McDonalds and other low-class restraunts.

We talked to one of the guys down there. All the fish get loaded in a truck with a tank and are shipped live to New York. I think they are served out there.

I saw a show on Discovery. They were on a cod boat that processed the fish right on board. They said 90% of their catch goes to McDonald's. Pretty sure they don't use rough fish for their sandwiches.

 Quote:
Gefilte fish (Yiddish: âòôÏéìèò ôÏéù) (English: filled fish) are poached fish patties or balls made from a mixture of ground deboned fish, mostly carp (common carp). They are popular in the Ashkenazi Jewish community.

Gefilte Fish

Gefilte fish is a cake or ball of chopped up fish. It is usually made with white-fleshed freshwater fish, such as carp or pike. The fish is chopped into small pieces (a food processor is good for this), mixed with onions and some other vegetables (carrot, celery, parsley). The mixture is held together with eggs and matzah meal. It is then boiled in broth for a while. It can be served warm or cold, though it is usually served cold with red horseradish and garnished with carrot shavings.

The word "gefilte" fish comes from German and means "stuffed." Some variations on gefilte fish involve stuffing the fish skin with chopped up fish.

They were pulling nets today - net to shore by 11:30. I would assume they will be sorting / culling this afternoon or tomorrow.

Keep Smiling.

All those roughfish netted and it didn't even put a dent in the population.
