**Weather Reports**

Recommended Posts

I thought a thread about the weather (rain, snow, wind, ect.) would be nice for helping all the less experienced anglers out there like myself.

If any of you guys have any input on the effects it will have this weekend post it here. Also, feel free to give any tips about fishing in such situations... daily updates would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, I think this will be a fun topic. grin.gif

Well, if you're going out ice fishing with 8-16" of snow coming down and 25-50 MPH winds, please bring a camcorder with you - I would love to see the video.

Cold - not an issue. Snow falling - not an issue (assuming ramps stay clear which they will at Everts). Wind - issue. Your boat control goes south fast and it is hard to stay on the current seams or depth for vertical jigging. Less of an issue for pitching jigs or blades. If it is really blowing time to anchor. Areas out of the wind will collect boats big time on windy days whether fish are there or not. Pitching 1/8oz jigs will be difficult. The trick is to keep the rod tip as close to the water as possible when casting and retrieving. This is when a quality medium light rod becomes a requirement. Another trick is to use drift socks to both slow down the drift as well as to improve boat control.

mark how do you possistion your drift sock on your boat? I've been thinking of doing this but havent tried it yet.

As for the colder temps if im catching fish it doesnt bother me at all if I'm not catching fish, well that hasnt happened YET (cross my fingers)

Usually off the stern as I use the trolling motor to control the boat and I try to keep boat parallell to shore. You could also try it off the middle of the boat for a controlled sideways drift and use the trolling motor to slide back and forth along the seam.

Any ideas on how the fish will bite due to this wonderful mn weather? And does anyone know how much the river came up from the rain? current flow?

So is it worth it to come down tomorrow then? Is the river going to be decent enough to fish?

The fish will definatly not be biting in the nasty weather. I don't know why I am going to even waste my time! ;\)

In wind, I like to anchor and cast heavier tackle. If the wind is blowing upstream I put a drift sock out to straighten the boat and keep the boat from blowing me upstream and off the spot.

The twin cities / chanhassen national weather service has a river watch graph. This morning at 7 am (4-12-08), it showed the mississippi river at lock and dam 3 to be at 673.49 ft(waterlevel), and the current flow was 37.5 kcfs. What does (kcfs) stand for? Is this conciderd high water and really fast current flow? Planning a trip over there tomorrow, kinda wondering if the river is still fishable?

KCFS stands for "1000 cubic feet per second".

The USCOE opened the gates wide open to let water through but the river is fishable.

Ok,just so i understand. The graph shows the river to be at 38.5 KCFS, what feet per sec. would that be? or cubic feet?

Mike,

Last year (I think it was you) posted a link to check out the flow on the river. I put it in my favorites and this year every time I tried to check it it tells me to try back later. Maybe it wasn't you but I thought you migh know what's going on or if there was another place I could check?

That is not up and running anymore. I really like the old one

HERE is the one that most people use now.

HERE are the tributaries and some other reaches of the river.
