I heard from a friend that access to the lake is very difficult. I'm looking to get on at the public landing near Grand Casino Mille Lacs.

Anyone been out there?

Thanks

I was out yesterday and the ice is in rough shape. Had to walk through 20 yards of water to get to the ice. I was not at the landing by the casino, but I'm sure it's not that much different. You may want to consider bringing the waders for that first 20 yards. Where I was fishing there was only 21 inches of ice also and it is very soft. Lets just say I didn't feel safe on the ice at all. Now with the storm we are suppose to get today and part of tommorow, I would be very cautious. The wind may break the ice out from shore even further and the added weight can not be good either. Another thing to look out for is old open holes that will be covered by this new fresh snow. Some of the old holes have opened up to almost spear hole sized. Good luck if you go.

What part of the lake did you access by? Lybacks is reporting the ice hasn't even started to pull away from shore yet by him and still has 30 inches of ice.

I was on the north end. The shallow sand warms up fast and that is why the shoreline is bad. There are areas of the lake that are better than others, but any where there is shallow sand is going to be about the same. I know there is quite a bit of shallow sand in front of the landing by the casino.

thanks for the insight...going up there is a long shot but if I did it would be after this snow melts off. Sounds like a bit of a pipe dream at this point but we'll see what next week brings.

I hear ya about the shallow sands and rocks. Those are the first to go. I plan on hitting the south side early next week. Tuesday for sure, talking mid 60's next week.

I am hitting the pond tomorrow(Wed) with 2 of my buddies. Going to try for some perch and maybe some crappies towards dark. Appledorns says you can get on the ice from his resort with a snowmobile and Lybecks said he buried the auger on the main lake.

Hopefully I will have a good follow up on Thursday.

As of Sunday afternoon, the ice is still good. It is getting that late season "ice cube" look from the scrappings when a hole is drilled, also the bottom blows apart in huge chunks when the auger goes threw.

Still plenty of ice. and most southern bays still have ice up to the shore line.

Got out late in the day Sunday and got 7 smaller crappies and hundreds of small to "O.K." big sunnies in a couple of hours.

Ice should be fine threw the weekend (IMO).

Good luck Biff.

Good luck S.A.

I think with the cloud cover, temps and lack of rain, the ice should be in O.K. cond... It might be a little wet.

Let us know how you do.

Thanks! Plan to be on the ice all day and will do the best we can only being on foot. I'll post up a report when we get back.

Great day to be on the ice! We checked out the public access next to the casino and there was no way we were getting onto the ice there. Headed to Whakon and Isle and there was enough to get on the water. Not a lot happening in the middle of the day in shallow so we walked deeper in search of perch. The walking wasn't easy with the slushy ice but we made it out a mile or two. The perch ran small but still nothing like 65 and sunny and being on the ice to enjoy it on April 20th! The ice gear is now put away and we're ready for open water season.

Great to hear S.A.

Nothing like ending the season on a great day, plus also Mill Lacs.

I think the ice will starting going fast this week.

Well, in my other post I stated that the 17th was going to be my last day ice fishing.....I lied. I walk out Saturday morning to the same spot where we fished on Wednesday. Fished the same holes. Didn't even bring the auger with me. I fished from 6:30am to 9:30am and kept 13 all between 10"-12" again. I got there at 6:30 and caught 3 keepers right away. Things were slow until about 8:45am when the dinner bell went off and caught another 10 from 8:45 to about 9:15 and then I packed it up at 9:30. I also caught another sucker. Man those things are ugly. Of the fish only 4 were females. Here are some pics with the fish and my little niece.
