Was there a week ago, water was higher but not too bad. water was medium to clear. Caught roughly 40 trout in the 9-13 inch range between me and a friend.

Thanks for the update DeanoB and Meaney. I have never been out that way before and after the flooding they got last year its nice to hear that there are some trout out there to fish. Plus we got a newbie to trout fishing with us this year and it would be great if he got a few bites to become addicted like the rest of us. ha ha ha

BTW; were you guys fly fishing, spinners or baitin it? Just curious what was working for you all.

Thanks,

Redbeard I live in Mantorville, hit me up sometime this year we could save some gas money by car pooling I know there's a few others that live in Dodge County as well.

I mostly fly fished, but caught some on a small trout design rapala countdown. I'm thinking the flashy raps should produce in the stained waters but who knows, some say best thing to use in muddy water is crawlers...

Sorry for the lack of responding... Everyone is sick with a head cold in my household so I apologize for not responding sooner.

The newbie (next door neighbor) was asking me all kinds of questions the other evening. He is getting so pumped up for this weekend I think he will top me on excitability factor. Just want to give him a positive experience so he'll become hopelessly addicted like me *wink wink*

DeanoB -Sounds like a plan; as long as you don't mind a little ol' bait fisherman like me. My weekends are booked till after mother's day but send me an email; love to hook up with new fishing partners in my area. Who knows you might even get me to take up fly fishing too!

Meaney -thanks for the info, guess I'll have to stop at Gander Mtn on friday and pick up a couple more...

Hey Wanger29

Tried sending you a email a while back but your yahoo account kicked it back to me as undeliverable. Got another email address I could try? Shoot me an email via the email address I listed on my profile or try my work account; Moolie should have it.

The BIG river? Are you referring to the mighty one that flows thru Austin :-) ha ha ha

Your offer is tempting; so very tempting; but my weekends are booked up til after Mother's Day. Family commitments and all. But hey send me an email with what you are thinking and I'll see if the Warden will let me off for good behavior. ha ha ha

Love to chat more and play catch up but got to start packing my gear & stuff for the weekend.

Good Luck to everyone this weekend and look forward to getting some emails from some of you real soon and to hear how everyone did this weekend...

later

Hey, with gas prices where they are the big river that flows thru Austin's been looking pretty good lately! Believe it or not but I've got quite a few nice eyes outta there last year and a couple of nice pike as well. Strictly C & R. Don't know what the outcome would be if I started eating any of 'em...

Here, Here! With Gas Prices being what they are I plan on doing more fishing closer to home. Plus my son started showing a real interest in fishing this winter and is getting excited to get again soon so hitting water close to home is a good option for a beginner.

If anyone else had told me that they pulled eyes and pikes out of that river I would say they were full of it. But if anyone could do it, it would be you! Thought the Cedar was only good for suckers and bullheads, guess I'll have to investigate the Cedar this summer.

Yeah I probably would wonder what the outcome of eating fish out of there. Probably end up growing extra toes or sitting on your throne all weekend.. ha ha ha

Catch ya later

Crazy, I've heard of lighting strikes doing that.  I wonder if they have some proof of intentional lighting?

Hunt the west end of Mille Lacs area in public land.  We had 5 hunters...I missed a med buck, and my buddy shot 2 bucks, that we shall say were not very old.  decent and got meat on the table, but the bigguns were not showing up.  We only saw 1 doe being chased by a small buck at dark...I did have something bound away when I was packing up last night.  Overall another wild opening weekend with some situations that happened that only happen when you are out in the woods and a bunch of other "hunters" are out with you.  Example as we were leaving the woods on Saturday the local fire department was there putting out a fire that they say was started due to some "hunters" starting the hollow trees on fire to smoke out porcupines, racoons, possums, and squirrels.  Apparently this is the 3rd fire in the past 2 weeks in the area, and they were threatening to shut the area down to hunters for the season!  We were wondering why a large trail had been cut through the woods to an area that was burnt deep into the swamps and oak ridges.  Find out that was a fire from a few weeks earlier!!  Unreal

Your rut thoughts sound pretty much dead on.  I have a buddy with 220 acres of land in center, mn and last year they had 5 very nice bucks on opening weekend and got nothing this year so far.  He thinks it's to warm still.

I’ve got plenty of photos over the past week but no tag filled.  I only saw 3 that I thought were worth a stalk with the bow in SD.  None worked out for one reason or another.  The two guys I went with both got smaller bucks.   Did 2 days archery in the 172 before boom stick season opened, then 2 days of that.  Had over 20 sightings; all but 2 were does and fawns.  The two others were a spike and fork.  I’m waiting on an adult.   Some shots were fired close to me but overall the amount shooting seemed to be down.  Friends in the area saw mostly does and fawns also but few bucks and let ‘em walk cuz they were small.  Sounds like that might be the one free pass they got though.   The bucks are there but not chasing yet.  Cameras show them at night.  Fawns are all with does yet.  This thing called the rut is still at a simmer based on what we’ve been seeing.

I was spared all but the last 2:47 of the game.  That was painful enough to watch.  My wife said the whole game was like that.  Glad I stayed in the deer stand.

It's been a month since I posted a fishing report, so thought I would share our results this past weekend.  The water temperature has dropped to as low as 41° in the shallow bays, though some of the deeper bays were still at 45.     Friday night and Saturday Jeff and I targeted walleyes and caught 95 of them with 13 over the slot, the biggest being a couple of 27 1/2"ers.  All of them were caught casting and all of them were released.  One of our 'overs' struck a 6 inch swimbait so violently that it blew the bait completely through her gills, where the lone treble hook stuck on the outside of the fish, halfway down her body.  Amazing...    On Sunday we targeted smallmouth bass and got 54 of them, with a handful in the 4 pound class though most were in the 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 pound class. We also caught a musky and a 26 1/2 inch walleye as a bonus by-catch while bass fishing.  That musky picked up a little finesse jig/craw worked on bottom in 20 feet of water.   All in all, it was time well spent on beautiful Lake Vermilion.  To do that with my son made the trip that much more special..

Nothing?  No one got a deer, saw a deer or heard a deer?  Know someone who got a deer or know someone that knows someone who got a deer this year?     I didn't go for one of the first years since I was 14, just no sign up where we hunt to give and effort.

Jeez, John Parker Romo never played in the NFL or with the Vikings and he walks on and saves the day!  I thinking he's a full time employee now!
