Any update on Medicine. Crappies going good? How deep?
Thanks much!

not sure about the crappies but the blue gills are hot, saw some people icing nice pike too.

Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-Na-FISH-ING

Crappies are real slow in 28'-32'... as for the few(and far between) flags.. most the pike have been running small.

There is about 6" of good ice, covered by about 3"-4" of very bad ice. A few ATV's out, and one idiot cruised across the ice this morning in a small Ford car... plain stupidity... The fishing is definately not worth swimming for.

where are the gills biting on the southend

I am going out on medicine for the first time any suggestions?

Was out last night and got a couple small bluegills on the south side largest going 7.5" mostly 6"ers headed out to the deeper water for some crappie action ended up catching 8 biggest going 10.5" and most were in the 9-10 range threw them all back alot of trucks out on the ice stayed to the atv for now
P.S. it was dam cold stayed till 8pm

we have been fishing on the point out in front of french park and have been catching crappies and perch all day and all night, and a friend of mine fished for 2 days by the apartments and caught 8 nine in walleyes and broke off on nice fish that he never got to see

The ice may be thick, but there are many thins spots, and many large cracks. Better to be safe than a pop sickle. By this weekend the ice should be safe enough to drive on.

I hope he didnt keep those 8 inch Eyes!

Local Boy Good to hear you are doing well on the crops. Any bigguns yet? I have been meaning to get out there but have been sticking to sarah. Fishing has been pretty good. Friday I pulled in a white that went a little over 15". Bbigger than any we got on Red a week ago. See ya out there and good luck!

he threw all the eyes back,

yeh i have been doin pretty good, we moved our perment out and we catch fish all the time in it, not any big ones yet tho, my biggest is prlly 11", but i have heard of many 13+ whites, this cold snap hasnet affected the fishing to much, actually today they where hammering it for the hour that we where there.

Posted

local boy, where is you're perm located? I've had luck catchin' northerns and a few walleyes. I've also been fishing faaaarrrrr away from the other fisherman. The GPS has been gold this year grin.gif

Posted

Tim ... give me a call when you have a chance .. I'll be down for a few days. I have my ATV's in town so theres a lot of options for fishing.

Good morning, I'm thinking about fishing Medicine but I have a hard time getting around, and I was wonder if I could drive out on the lake.
Thanks for any info.

Posted

Is there good night fishing out there??

Posted

Step & 1/2 ...

There was one vehicle that drove across the the west side a couple days ago.. everyone was surprised he didnt go through. I rode my atv's out without a problem, but you couldnt pay me to take my truck out.

There was about 6" of good ice, with 3" of very bad ice on top.

It should be drivable for lighter vehicles in a few days with the cold(finally).

Posted

my house is located on the big west point, its red, its in a pack of about 5 or 6 different houses, i think we are goint to move it north a ll bit but not sure yet

Posted

Fisher Dave, Thanks for the info. It sounds like I should hold off until next week before I think about driving out on the ice. With this cold weather I would hope we're make more ice.
Thanks again.

How has the morning bite been?? I am heading out there tomorrow around 6:30ish to try to get some crappies. Also, does anyone know the current ice conditions?

Posted

just got off the lake around 8:00 fished for 3 hours only had 6 crappies largest one was 9.5" threw them all back some friends got out around 3 and were still there when I left and they only had 5 between the two of them. alot of peeps were leaving at 6:30 and a few were coming out around 8:00

Posted

There is alot of a$$holes out on the lake I had a guy drive a full size pickup 8ft from my portable along with a couple guys going 40mph. IDIOTS. I wish I had my paintball gun I would shot everyone of them morons.

Posted

HAHA!, I know how you feel man. That is the main reason I stay FAAAAR away from the crowd. There are hundreds of good fishing spots on Medicine. I'm gonna try to get out within the next couple days. I know I'm going out this weekend.

Posted

I'm heading out on Medicine tonight. I'll probably pick up some minnows at Harty's at 4:15pm and then head out. Haven't selected a spot other than narrowing down the spots I won't be at. If anyone is gonna be out there and interested in some company, speak up.

Posted

G-man, I hope you find the crappie bite. Give me the report

Posted

Tryed another GPS'd hotspot that was away from the crowds last year (my last one). Found 6"-8" aggressive perch there until sundown. No crappies moved in behind them. Moved to the cluster of houses off the main west point and the bottom 4' was full of fish, but what they were, I can't tell you. Because I couldn't get even one of them to nibble. Minnows, Waxies, Euro Larvae, glow everything, spoons, jiggin rap ... Talked to three other fish houses that were also out last night and no one was catching much. One group of two guys caught 3 crappies total, all between 3pm and sundown on waxies about 3' off the bottom. I'm guessing I was in the group of houses that local boy's house was in because there were two red permanent shacks there (1 big one and 1 smaller one). I only went there because that group was in the vacinity of my other GPS point.

It's kind of sad. The two lakes I loved the most in this state are Mille Lacs and Burntside.  And I think we broke them both!  😕

Went back to Burntside on Tuesday and I got "skunked again" (LOL).  Looked like the lake was a mess over the weekend, but it was all frozen solid by sunrise Tuesday when I arrived.  The new ice cleats I got worked very well on the glare ice.  Was a beautiful sunny day but cool and quite windy.  I had a nice view of my tip-up from my warm fishhouse but the flag never went up, and I didn't mark a fish while jigging.  May have to try North Arm next, or go back into the BWCAW if the ice conditions improve.

Yes, eagle swoops are awesome.  Had one happen when I was duck hunting one year in Stuntz Bay.  Stole the only duck I got that day.   Vermilion got very wet over the weekend.  Tower Cafe posted a video of a SxS driving into McKinley Park landing going through water that went over their floor board.  Burntside Lake was frozen nice and solid Tuesday morning when I was there.

Or the other book that said: The bitterness of poor quality outlasts the sweetness of a low price…   Dang, what a mess to have to deal with.

When it said. "The foolish man, builds his house upon the sand"? 🫣   Just got back from 10days on the golf of America.  By Panama city Florida.

      Venny backstrap and the fixins!

Running on empty at dark on a sled is definitely stress-inducing. Been there, done that. Glad that you made it out.

Eagle swoops are always a hoot to watch.   The snow is mostly gone on the lake. Ice melt made things pretty wet but the ice is obviously still very thick.

On the South Shore...  The big question:  "How is the ice up at Lake of the Woods?"  That is for each individual resort or outfitter who operates an ice road or trail to answer, but overall, ice conditions are still very good and ice fishing is going strong!  As always, stay on the marked ice  roads and trails for safety.     Being up on the Canadian border, the colder temps Lake of the Woods enjoys vs much of the region combined with three feet of ice makes a big difference.  Fish houses are allowed unattended overnight through March 31st and it sounds like a good number of resorts will be fishing through the month, but ultimately, Mother Nature will determine that.     Regarding the fishing, overall, very good reports for walleyes, saugers and perch.  There is a strong population of smaller walleyes and saugers in the lake which bodes well for the future, but in the meantime, anglers are sorting through them to catch their keepers.   The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head or a lipless crankbait on the jigging line is the ticket.  On the deadstick, a live minnow a foot off the bottom on a plain red hook or medium sized ice fishing jig is catching a lot of fish.   Using electronics is super helpful.  Many nice walleyes are swimming through suspended, keep an eye out.   Anglers tip-up fishing for pike have had a great week and it should continue to get even better.  Suckers, frozen alewife and smelt are working well. Putting baits 1 foot under the ice or right off bottom seems to be effective this week.  Most common depths, 9 - 15 feet. On the Rainy River...  The Rain River is still frozen with no signs of open water yet.  Every year can be different, but on average, the Rainy River will start opening up around the third week of March.  The first boat ramp suitable for larger boats is Nelson Park in Birchdale.  We will keep you posted.    As of March 1st, walleyes and saugers are catch and release only on Four Mile Bay and the Rainy River.     Make plans now for sturgeon season.  Once the open water appears, the fish are super active.  Here are the seasons...   -Catch and Release Season: May 8th – May 15th and October 1 – April 23rd. -Harvest Season: April 24th – May 7th and July 1 – September 30. -Closed Season: May 16th – June 30th.  Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good up at the Angle and the ice is in good shape as well.  As on the south end, resorts monitor ice roads and trails daily and there are still some great ice fishing opportunities available.     Walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike are showing up in good numbers.  Those targeting crappies are reporting good numbers of fish.  Work through a NW Angle resort for ice fishing opportunities on this part of the lake. The walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Looks like a shallow lake with some potential.  Keepable crappies, decent bluegills and some nice perch according to the last survey (2015). Susan Lake   With a max depth of 10 feet, I’d want to know a little more about it before I’d start drilling holes.  Could be a nice little adventure though.
