I would guess that the ice will be out by the 1st of May. I would also bet that Jonny and kelly could be somewhat closer as they have seen this for years.

Two years ago I hit URL on the way home from the LOW's fishing sturgeon and fished for crappies on the 21st of April. maybe this year again but its not looking good for that.

I've fished Red once in my life and did well but know nothing about ice out. With that said I will say May 3rd.

It is going to clear fast this year, we have half the ice we normaly have and as light as the snowfall was it did take its toll on the ice. To predict it tell me what the lows, highs, precip, wind speeds and barometric pressure are going to be and we should be able to tell you when the ice sheet will go. ;\)

Its a tough question, one good rain storm and it ups the date, a few days of heavy winds will break it up and two good cold nights will lock it back up.

I would say last week in April we will have room for boats and the river will be open but most likley closed to fishing.

They MAY,MIGHT or MAYBE will close the Tamarac river during walleye spawn. The last few years they have shut it down to protect the walleyes. Now I have not heard anything about this yet but I would guess they will do it again this year as it does help the fishery.

He is refering to the last week in April when (apparently) walleye fishing is closed in the tamarack river as it is their spawning area.

How does this year line up with previous years in terms of ice out? By opener, id assume many of the walleyes will still be in the tamarack, right?

Normaly it is closed to all fishing and not just anglers targeting walleye.

I'm thinking about heading up to red this weekend, how much ice is left? Plenty? I've never been there before, is there anything that I should know, or pay attention to?

I was out yesterday with no problems. A snowmobile is by far your best option for travel cause the shore line has a little water on it in some places. I'm sure you could use an atv too but a sled is faster and you don't need to worry too much about the water or crossing big banks and pressure riges. By the way fishing was good too.

how thick is the ice out there Cat21? what was your biggest slab caught if you are speaking of good fishing as in crappies? I didnt think there would be people still venturing out there and fishing with the shoreline being a little weak, sounds like it wasnt too hard to get out there

I would guess about 30 inches or so. The top 10 or 12 in getting soft but there is still really good ice under that. The biggest crappie was a red lake average (13.5-14). To be honest with you I did'nt even measure anything, they just go in the bucket. There were also a lot of nice perch in our pail too. Getting out is really easy still. The shoreline isn't too bad yet.

I was out yesterday. The ice is getting thinner. I think its around 2 ft and pretty honeycomed. No you don't need an extention any more. Perch fishing was quite good and the walleyes are everywhere. I think I'm done now but who knows!!!! There just something wrong about ice fishing in a t-shirt, but it sure is nice.

Don't plan on making the 4-hour drive to find out there's bad ice anyway! Just curious bud.

We didn't find any crappies on the last trip out. Lots of perch and walleyes. Maybe I'll go one more time the first part of this week but who knows. I may just so the heck with it and put the snowcat away. I really don't want to get wet!!

I am seriously staring to get a little worried. I have plans of being up there for opener. I am not in full panic mode, but a little concerned the ice will not be off by opener........

Whats everyone else think.........

The ice is moving around the lake and busting up pretty bad. I would say things will be just fine for opener. I would also guess this pile of snow we got is sinking it speedig the colplete break-up time..

This week is suppose to be pretty nice, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Jonny P, you ever had ice on the lake on opener?

I have heard of openers with ice form oldtimers but I have only seen chunks of ice at opener floating around. I think we will be fine.

This picture of the ice crashing around was taken yesterday(April 27th )

I believe it was "96" when the only opening in the ice was at the mouth of the Tamarac. It didn't bother too much tho as we only had about 10 fishermen around. grin.gif

I remember that opener, we have a cabin on Big Sand by Bowstring and we could only fish the river on the north end by the landing, and ice was still floating around

Got my new Lund in 96. My friend has a cabin on Benedict lake which hooks on to Leech and that is where I have been going for the opener the past 20 some years. He says to not come up as there is a big sheet of Ice on Walker bay and if the wind is out of the south it will push that sheet of ice up on the north shore points where we like to fish and might damage my boat. I stayed home and fished in the south (Lake Reno) - no fish. My friend and his dad and a couple of his boys went out and when the water warmed up about noon kicked some serious butt - best opener in years and I stayed home.
