Ice out predictions

The ice is not gone yet. The strong east wind today pushed all the ice to the west side of the lake where all the natives lost their nets underneath the ice.

Lost nets under the ice... oh well, looks like they'll have to use rods, line, and bait just like everyone else this year...

The sad part is the fish still get caught in the nets and the weight does not go against there allotment. Very sad.

Exactly, and how many fish are dead because of it.

I should know this but it escapes me at the moment...when is netting done? Is it a time period or an allotment amount?

No one knows exact numbers, but I will tell you it's a lot of dead fish. Weather forecasters predicted the heavy wind from the east in advance, yet the natives still put out all their nets the night before knowing the ice will blow to the west side of the lake. Very irresponsible on their part and there are still nets out there underneath the ice full of walleyes that still have not been recovered yet. The big females have just started moving up on their beds. Two natives, just two, weighed in 700 lbs. of walleye just one night. They are hitting huge numbers of walleye right now. It's just really sad that they have lost their nets because who knows how many more fish will be killed with them still out there.

Looks like George already has his docks in.... He must be pretty confident that the flow isn't going to blow back East.

how bad did the ice blow around yesterday? We had lots of ice movement here on the smaller lakes in the Linclon lakes area.

I heard from a friend that the ice went out yesterday afternoon. They talked to a buddy that lived up there on the west side and they said it was off.

Is this true?

No. There is still ice blowing around on the lake. It will probably be out by Sunday for sure though.

Although from some areas of the lake no ice is visible, there is still ice on the lake. It better be off very soon.

From the State Climatology office:

"The definition of lake ice-out varies from lake to lake, and individual to individual. For some, ice-out occurs only when the lake is completely free of ice. For others, ice-out is defined as the moment when navigation is possible from point A to point B. And yet for others, ice-out is when 90 percent of the lake is ice free. Due to the variable definitions of this rather subjective observation, the State Climatology Office attempts to contact the same individuals each year to maintain a consistent record."

I would have to say the ice is off the lake. The wind has been blowing VERY HARD out of the NW and if there was any ice left it would be piled on my shore right now. Nothing out there but open water and BIG waves.

Fishorgolf, I was up to the pond on Thursday May 1st. and there was ice as far as the eye could see. It stretched from just east of Garrison and ended just south of the Casinoe on 169. The way it looked to me is that it will still take a few more days and some heat to get rid of it.

I am looking at the lake right now and no ice. I am on the SE side and the wind is blowing in from the NW. I am going to take a ride around the lake right now and will report back.

Good to hear! Looks like partly cloudy and in the 50's all week, with rain and showers scheduled for next weekend (I know you're all surprised to hear that grin.gif ). Will be interesting to hear water temperatures from here on out. It will probably be a tough bite with the forage abundance, but it's still good to wet a line and be out on the big pond!

OK, I just got back from a drive around the lake in the M3. No the ice in not "totally" off the lake but there is only slush in some SW bays that got caught when the wind changed from the NE to the NW. The lake is 99% ice free as of right now. The lake will be official tomorrow.

Allot of people believe like legend_89 that you need heat to get the ice to go. Does it help? yes, but the biggest factor is wind and rain. At this time of year the sun is as intense as it is in late August so there is plenty on solar heat to help things along.

We just got back from the west side about 15 minutes ago and the wind blew the ice in on a large portion of the west side.

Wig-wam is iced in for as far out as you can see and it remains that way until you get up towards St. Albans, then you see some open spots. The launch on #169 north of the casino is iced in...isn't solid, but ice none the less, and out quite aways. No fishing boat is gonna launch there...not for awhile. A few days of high temps may change that though.

South of the casino, around and south of Vineland, it's open, with maybe 30 yards of slush ice around the shoreline.

This is a good time to ask how "ice out" is actually defined. Who makes the call for the record books and what are the criteria?

just got back from wigwam and i wouldn't say ice is out there yet. most of the bay is still covered, although it looks pretty rough.

Unbelievable. Is the ice out or is it not. You have guys saying they just drove the lake and its gone and there are guys that say there is ice as far as they can see??? Ice out in my book is when there is no ice on the lake at all. ICE OUT is the term not ICE ALMOST OUT!! I am fishing there for opener and I guarantee the ice will be gone by Saturday.

Perhaps this topic should be nets out rather than ice out? I am guessing these tools of heritage could be damaging boats along with the ice for a while.

The ice officially went out 5/4 according to the State Climatology Office.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
