Recommended Posts

Well lets hear some names for our team boys. Also when/where you are hunting and bow or gun.

I did not get drawn this year so I will be hunting the last two seasons by archery in 223.

Hi Guys! I'll be hunting in several states this year starting down in Kansas on the 14th of this month. Looking to take a Rio's to finish out my slam. Heading out to SD. on the 23rd of this month to chase around some Merriam's. Hunt Wisconsin May 2-4 and then finish up here in MN. in zone 425, May 7-10. Hopefully I can put a bird or 2 down for our team.

As for a team name, how about "Longbeard Assassins"

I didn't get drawn for MN either but will be in NE April 4th-6th and the Black Hills the 17th-21st so hopefully I can put us on the board early... otherwise I'll try MN the last two weeks.

Longbeard Assassin is my middle name! grin.gif

Hey Joel, why aren't you on a team?

It's sure gonna help that half our team is hunting multiple states, I like how that increases our odds. Is anyone on the team using a bow?

Mostly to avoid any conflict of interest arguments that might come up. Last year, there was a member who sent me an email to that effect. It also allows Borch another bias-free judge should he need to confer. I'm also putting on a similar contest for our local chapter of the NWTF, and it's starting to get confusing! eek.gif

If I'm lucky enough to guide folks towards a bird or take one myself, I'll make sure and post pics and a story with the hunt.

Good luck to you guys and all teams, except Dittrich's :). Cooter's too.

Joel

Strictly bow for me... shot my first one with the shotgun and the rest have fallen to arrows. Sliced a bunch of cucumbers in half with the Bullhead last night. That head is wicked! Leaving tomorrow at noon. Will have an update on Monday. Wish us luck!

Good luck Hoyt... supposed to be a beauty of a weekend down there.

Where's 8pt and Mnpurple?

Hey sticknstring, best of luck to you out there in NE. You to Hoyt! Tag a big one!

The one thing I'm not real fond of in this contest is that we can't up grade on our bird if we take more then one. Suppose to register the first bird taken. Most of the Merriam's I've taken over the years don't score as high as an Eastern will on average. Can kind of penalizes the guys who hunt for Merriam's first. This is just a miner thing tho as I just love to hunt these birds! It's what I start thinking about back in November, Turkey hunting that is.

Good luck to both you guys. I wouldn't worry much about not being able to "upgrade" your bird. I don't think any team had a turkey for each person last year, so just registering a bird is what we need.

Hey boys! I'll be hunting 346A, coming up pretty quick. My plan is to hunt with the bow although theres always the possibility of some frustration and me flinging some lead.

This will be my first attempt with the bow and I was just going to use my deer heads, Magnus Stingers with the motto, hit 'em high watch 'em die, hit 'em low, watch 'em go. Am I playing with fire using this head and not an expandabled?

Go luck to the rest of you guys.

Purple - stick with those Stingers... they'll get the job done.

Well we're back from NE... rolled in at 2am this morning. Had a great trip. Battled the wind and some spittin snow last night but wound up killing 4 birds nonetheless. Got a lot of good pictures and some great video as well. My girlfriend who has never hunted before started off the trip right opening morning with a stud of a bird! Most of the birds in the area are hybrids but this one had almost pure Merriam blood. 22# 9 1/2" beard and 1 1/4" spurs. That made the trip for me... I didn't even have to shoot a bird after that. But as luck would have it... opportunity presented. I shot a jake with a Bullhead later that afternoon and we each shot a jake the 2nd day. I only had two toms within bow range, one of which was missed and the other one... well cry.gif The jake crop was unbelievable. You'd have 7-10 come in at a time. But not many toms. Should bode well for next year though. Birds are still bunched up pretty good. You'd have smaller flocks of 15-25 birds coming in. The hens should be starting to nest though and the hunting should only get better in the upcoming days. Here's a story for ya as if this isn't getting long enough! So the 2nd morning we both shot birds but remained in the blind as both birds ran off. Wanted to give them some time. So after a hew hours pass... we start tracking our birds and come up mine and find a bobcat by him! Cat runs off... he had the bird completely covered with leaves and dirt. Pickup the turkey and the heads gone! No head, neck, beard... nothing - all gone. I guess he decided to eat the head and save the rest for later. Pretty wild. So the pictures of the 2nd bird weren't very nice. I didn't get the measurements on my birds for the contest. A jake is a jake to me... both were a little over 14bs with 3-4" beards. Here's a few from the trip... Bring on SoDak!

Anyone good with editing video? I got all this footage on my cam and need to start doing some editing and getting it on youtube or something. If you know of a freebee or cheap video editing software - please let me know.

Very, very cool. Glad to hear you had a good trip. Great to see the girlfriend getting her first bird, and a dandy at that.

NE is loaded with birds, esp. the primarily private land portion of the state!

Thanks guys - It was a fun 3 days. She's having her bird mounted full strut the way he shot him. I take her up to URL and a crappie gets put in the freezer, now a turkey, I'm afraid to bring her in the woods this fall! eek.gif

About that headless, beardless bird... well I do believe that the contest started April 5th at noon right? Well I had both birds killed before that so I think I'll have to wait 'til I get back from the Black Hills to register one! This time I'm gonna get one for the wall. Good luck fellas hopefully Hoyt will have some good stories for us when he returns from the turkey state. Here's that headless jake - I guess if I had to score him... 14lbs + 10(.25) + 10(.25) = 19. That'll win us the contest for sure!

Just got back I will have photos. We had to rush and get them done because rain started to come down and we where breaking camp.I hope I coverd the rules, the contest form was not out by time I left on the 4th.We had a great hunt when I left today we had 6 birds for 4 guys. One guy in camp was on his third tag.I brought him out this morning called in a great looking merriam all white and he missed at 10 yards oh well that's how it goes.I did end up taking a 19.6 long beard on the 8th and a Jake that evening. My long beard had 4 beards I will put that all in once I get the pictures.I had a witness sign a sheet a paper with the date and a picture of him with the bird I just don't know how the photos will turn out with the measurements. If they don't work I will be back in SD next week.

Maybe see if you slide the winch back on the tongue an inch or two. The roller needs to contact the boat to keep it from bouncing. Should check to make sure the rear bunk rollers line up with the rear transom for stability.
    • gunner55
Every rig we've owned the roller is above the eye & snug to the boat when it's loaded.

I looked at my rig yesterday . It is a matched boat/trailer package from Lund . My roller is above the eye but snug onto the bow , probably an inch maybe more, higher than yours.

If I have where you are right then lake Nokomis is near you. There’s lots of good walleye and crappie in there. If not I might suggest Medicine lake. There’s a handful of shore areas to fish and some easy to access kayakable areas. Lots of northerns and panfish in that lake. Look for weed edges and either cast spoons, spinnerbaits, etc for pike or bobber and work for panfish. Also some bonus walleye in there from time to time.

Wild trout are more cautious, and basically smarter. I rarely do well with flashy or bright lures on streams with wild trout. But when I fish designated trout lakes up north, it usually doesn’t matter what color I use. But I’ll give the flashy stuff a slight edge.

Went wading on the upper croix today. Started at my secret spot, but high water made it tough to get around. Fish were fairly active though. Caught 5 decent bass and a little pike. Zipped up to highway 70 bridge and gave that a try. Caught 2 really nice walleyes here. But like the other spot, high water made wading not possible. Might come back here with my boat though 🤔

I just moved to Minnesota, I live in Maplewood and looking for somewhere near by to fish for catfish from the shore. Any suggestions?
    • ANYFISH2
Nice to trip for the family it looks like. A round home here in central MN, the fish are very much in that phase of,    Bass- they are three phase right now, some are post spawn, some are spawning and on beds, other are still pre-spawn and staging.  Nice that most tactics can work on a single lake but each day is different.   Panfish are similar, most fish are still staging but alot of males are shallow and some beds are being swept.   Pike-have been all over the board here.  I have figures out a great system yet.   Walleye- are still preferring shiners and other minnows right now.  Leeches have not really produced well with the exception of the river bite.  Most fish still biting in less than 16ft of water.   Water temps- continue to be very lake dependent.  I have been seen 60-65 degrees on most smaller lakes and the bigger 2000 acre lakes I am seeing from 55-60 degrees main lake.

Sounds like you got your money’s worth!   I hunted 3 afternoons in the C season is all, due to being too busy with work and projects or too tired/lazy to get up in the morning.  Didn’t take any time off work to chase with all the COVID stuff going on.  The bird I did get was one one the easiest birds I’ve ever taken on the first day of the last season.     I guess what I’m saying is you EARNED that bird and should rightfully be proud!
