I agree with this lull not being any fun, though our team still has twice as many views as most others smirk

Just finishing a long string of 12 hr shifts tomorrow so Wednesday heading up to Brainerd for a couple days of fishing, then back to St. Cloud for my opening Friday. Really haven't had any time to scout lately though which bothers me. I think Friday might be that scouting day, we'll see how it goes. Haven't heard from a friend if he's gonna be in on it or not with the video, still interested if he's not?

The dilemma I have is what to do this weekend. I wanted to go up to Park Rapids for an annual fishing trip. Think its gonna be a last minute decision.

Tipp - I'd be game for working some birds this weekend if you're gonna stick around. A bird from you locks in those calls for the team. And I want one! hehe grin Shoot me an email and let me know...

Well guys I think that I'll stick around this weekend and try to bag us that bird. I wouldn't mind the calls either grin, or the bragging rights.

It'll be the first time I've hunted late season before. Should be interesting to see how the birds act differently. If they're still using the same area hopefully everything will come through for us.

Paintbrush where's that bird of yours?

Well we had to come back early and cut the hunt short. Had some things come up here at home?We ended up with a bird a piece. We had chances to fill both tags we still might head back tomorrow or Sunday for the last day. My bird will just fall short of my first. Your score is 18.125 + 3.75 + 6.875 + 25.75 = 54.5.Bird was 18.2 Lbs and 10.5 and 2.375 beards. One spur 11/16 and the other 3/4.My buddy had birds that where responding. Mine just gave me enough time to shoot. Dropped right out of roost and on hill side in front of me I was going to get greedy and try and take two but he gave me a wide open shot so I dropped him there no flopping. After that I really didn't have any other chances.Good luck Tip.

Ok here's a summary of this years hunt.

Day 1. Went to the spot I saw 14 longbeards earlier but haven't had time to scout lately. Didn't see or hear a turkey all morning! Thought I might be in trouble but checked on another spot I have access to on the far eastern side of area 223 and the landowner said he's been seeing birds. Set up blind.

Day 2. Heard gobbling right away in the morning. Had two toms come in and one offered a 30 yrd shot. He had a thin beard though and there were 5 more toms coming in behind him. I had visions of picking out the biggest while they were all strutting in the decoys. Well they crossed long and pulled the bird at 30 yrds with them, never got a shot and couldn't call them in.

Day 3. Birds didn't even enter field I was in today. Checked out spot on far western side of 223 and saw some birds. Set up a makeshift blind out of nearly see through duck blind netting that I tripled up to help out in a U shape. It's the best I could do with what I had and it was thick behind me with brush. Cut a hole in center and hoped for the birds to come out in front to decoys and shouldn't be too hard of a shot.

Day 4. Birds gobbling behind me in morning. They flew down and started coming right in once I called to them along field edge. Once they got around corner and saw decoys they held up. There were 7 or 8 toms, two went out to middle of field and the others I waited for then tried calling to. After about 30 mins they had enough and started walking away after getting within 30 yrds, but through thick brush. I was on my knees and legs were completely numb, managed to find a very small hole through the brush and knew I would get busted drawing back but I had to take the chance. (was off to the side of my blind material) Heads went up, I was barely able to finish the draw since it was to my far right and such an awkward angle to draw. Heads went up and they began clucking when one walked into my small area of opportunity. I took the 33 yrd shot which was as tough as I was comfortble taking and looked like I hit him good. He immediately flew straight into a huge wet swamp. My arrow looked good with blood and feathers. Gave him 30 mins and went looking where I marked him last, after 20 mins of looking was feeling disappointed when I saw a dark patch across a drainage ditch. Well it was him looked like he landed dead with wings out. Flew about a hundred yards total. Hit him right where I wanted just in front of leg on left and through on right 2/3rds of way up to back. Used hypershocks.

Wont be able to help you out sticknstring, private land and I won't be around anymore, otherwise it would be fun. One of the birds with the one I shot even had a double beard too! first I've seen.

I had one die in mid-flight before with an arrow sticking out of him... tough birds no doubt. Sounds like the action was good and the hunt even better. I've been doing lots of hunting but the kind that involves a house and not a turkey cry

Same teams next year right grin

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!
    • PSU
How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
