I'm genuinely excited for the Burbot nite-bite when I'm in a Schuster's sleeper house on the big pond next weekend (mar. 1st and 2nd.). I've eaten them many years ago, and I've done a little research on them the past couple of days, but I want to bounce these questions off of you folks.
Favorite cooking method. Lobster boil sounds good, but shore lunch and fried?
Best way to clean them. Filleted like a walleye?
Limits. If I catch tons, can I take tons home? What about the "one inch patch of skin"? Don't want a ticket.
Any and all opinions appreciated. I've caught plenty of them, and I know they'll pi$$ up your cloths and fish house, and I know they'll wrap you up, but what the heck, it beats playing cards! And I remember that fish tasting great!

We've always cut the two backstraps starting from behind the head and going back to the tail. Then we cut those up into bite-sized pieces, batter 'em up and deep fry them. They are great! The lobster boil sounds good, too, but I've never tried them that way.
On another note---what's the best way to catch these things? I know everyone, including myself, hooks into one or two while going after walleyes, but is there a sure-fire way of catching mostly burbout? Live bait, salted minnows, jigging, or dead-stick? Just curious.

try a glow buckshot after dark usually can get a couple before crawlin in the sleepin bag.

I cut off the back straps and the tail meat, then I put them in boiling water (add seasonings to your own tastings to the water) for about 5 min.
Take out of water and serve with hot melted butter and baked potato. UMMMMMM! smile.gif
You'll love it!

Try a chunk of cut Tulibee/ciscoe on your hook/lure. I also like them poached/boiled, try doing it in 7-up, then dip in seasoned butter.
fisky

Whatever you do, don't try and fillet one.
There are alien things inside of those creatures.
Stick to the backstraps. Let them stiffen up a bit, then take the backstraps off of them just as you would take the straps off a deer.

Eelpout scampi:
Cut out the backstraps, and cut into chunks.
Layer in a cakepan, and top with garlic salt, butter, parmeson cheese, and dillweed. Add a little water and bake at 350 degrees.
Works good for any fish.

Thanks for the info guys. That crayfish thing is interesting. We're heading up there the last weekend in March. I'll have to try some of those tactics. I always like to try new things and experiment with my second line while "really" fishing with the first. You never know what works 'til you try!

89Bronco, my soninlaw caught one earlier this year by twin Is. It burped up a couple of crayfish and two small frogs!! No kidding! I got one not too long ago on 12 mile , after cleaning like Widetrack (just the back straps) I opened it up.It was full of crayfish. Got me thinking of maybe crayfish scent on Fisky's bait tip. Hmmm.

------------------
Old Guide Charters
Lake of the Woods
http://fishingminnesota.com/oldguidecharters/
Call Toll Free:1-800-952-(9484)

Ya, 120.00 sux. I have Access Broadband, they just raised their rate from 50.00 to 75.00. I'm lucky to get 3 to 5 mbts up or down, sometimes I'll get better. In fairness to them, they have been great trying to respond to my needs, but just can't improve my service. They said that they doubt I'll ever be able to stream a Wild game. I just purchased a new streaming box and it buffers none stop. With the new streaming box and the referral discount, I'll be able to cancel Sling, so, I'll save about 10.00 on my monthly bill. That's what I told my wife 😀 it's true...

That's a better price than when I bought a few years ago. I pulled the giant box across the ice on an old Radio Flyer sled late winter. Good luck. You'll enjoy Starlink, except for paying the bill. Mine was originally $100/mo, then $110/mo, then they said I was in a low usage area so they dropped my bill to $90/mo for the last two years. I just got a letter a month or so ago saying that we are now in a "high usage" area so they raised it to $120/mo.

I did the app thing. The best place is the middle of my yard and that's not going to happen. I have a tripod stand and a "J" type stand. I've also looked at trimming some trees for a better view of the sky. Once I get it, I'll have to try different areas. Maybe I'll have to hire a guy to climb my tree and install it- I've seen YouTube videos on that. Middle of my roof looks to be somewhat clear, but I don't like to put holes in the shingles. Plus, it's a 12/12 pitch and I don't have Velcro shoes. If anyone is looking to buy Starlink, it's on sale till 4/30 at $159.00. If you do buy it, I can give to a referral code and we'll both get a free month.

With the current conditions and weather forecast I would still stick to Sunday, May 4th. I almost guarantee Vermilion will be ice-free by the opener on May 10th. Very likely someone on the list will have the correct date.

Black Bay began opening yesterday afternoon. I could see ice moving around in the middle.

I've got it too. It works great if you can get a clear view of the sky, works decent if there are blockages. I had to take down two trees and still have branches that reach out and interrupt. Some people have their dish mounted on shore which probably helps a lot. You can download the Starlink app and then walk around your property. It will assess any spot to see if you'll get enough coverage.

I've seen them at the Cub in Minnetonka and just a few weeks ago, the Cub in Chanhassen. The little smelt, smaller than sardines.
