Any Idea what this slushly snow will do to the ice we have? White Bear and Bald Eagle are looking very grey! I hope it won't set us back to much.

Good question, anyone have any opinion? I would also like to hear what everyone thinks all this snow will do to our ice situation.

My guess is that it's going to be cold enough the next couple of days that the snow shouldn't matter too much and we will be in pretty good shape metro wise by this weeekend.

the more snow you have one a lake the longer it takes to make more ice because the snow acts as an insulator. also the ice won't be as good and hard if there was no snow on the lake. the cold weather this week should help out the sloppy situation though.

We're going to Medicine tonight - yikes I hope it's safe. Only going out a few yards.

I have to assume that the wind helped out some and that the snow out there isn't 10" deep. I also think that with this cold that has finally arrived we'll still be putting on a few inches. I don't think I'll fo out this weekend, but hopefully by the 20th.

JOER67,
THE ONLY SLUSH YOU KNOW ABOUT IS THE FROZEN BEER IN YOUR TRUNK.

So that's what happened. I was wondering. I work next to lake Smetana. Whatever clear ice was left is now slushed over. It looks frozen now though.

So is this good news or bad news for shallow water fishing? The fish shouldn't be able to see ya. But I wonder how quickly the weeds will die off now? Something to ponder on.

"Although that stuff won't add to the strength of the ice, it won't insulate it either. "

perfect!

I checked out the "slush" ice tonight and most of it was pretty well frozen. But choping through it was wierd. It was like two separate layers. The top layer was the frozen slush, but underneath was the good, black ice. The good news is, the good, black ice is thicker than it was last Saturday.

There were some areas where some low snow banks had formed. The slush was still slushy under there. Pretty scary to walk on.

The new snow didn't melt on the ice. It started out as a heavy wet slop that weigh and pushed the ice down and caused the water to "come up" either from cracks in the ice or the edges of the shoreline. I fear this my have created a "sandwich" effect. Hard ice on top, slop in the middle, and hard ice on the bottom. I have seen this before. But I have not been out to check to see if that is the case. We need cold temps to make this one solid piece of ice.

There is on positive thing about this snow cover. The fish won't be as paranoid if there is a bit of snow on top of the ice to block out the sun and dull the noise of your auger and spud bar.

Haven't dared to walk out but the ice on Bush looked real spooky today with the slush coating. I drove by after dark yesterday and it looked like open water!

I took a short walk out on Powers lake in Woodbury today after work, walked out about 6 feet and it felt like the ice was starting to give. I didn't poke any holes but I kind of believe that the ice is now layered. Should be good by this weekend though.

When I got home last night, the lake looked very strange. So I walked down there and the ice was covered with two inches of slush. All of the snow that fell, melted when it landed on the ice. With the cold temps last night all that slush would have frozen. Although that stuff won't add to the strength of the ice, it won't insulate it either.

On Medicine last night on the west side there was a good 4.5" of clear ice then an inch layer of slush and another inch of frozen slush. Where we went the ice was fine. Today and tomorrow should make hella ice.

Have you had success on Powers? I went one or two times last year and only got one small perch. I hear there are eyes in there but have never seen one come out.

JITTERBUG you are exactly right on what happend to the ice. idealy you get a foot of good clear ice before any snow comes but it usually doesnt work that way. When the lakes do flood your usually best off if you get enough snow so it floods everyplace and then freezes through. at least it is somewhat uniform then anyway. that white ice does make for a mess in the spring though as it will turn back to a slushy mess back on top when it begins to thaw in late winter. we didnt get the snow in the nw metro so our ice is alittle better out this way.

Swamp scooter, I just moved to Woodbury so I haven't fished it yet, but the map looks good and so does the DNR's report, if you want some sunnies. It's close to home so I can hit it after work. Went out there today after work and that slushy stuff froze hard, but where there was snow covering the ice it was still wet under the snow. Go figure?
