crappies on prior

Recommended Posts

AceintheHole, don't let the naysayers bother you. They come out of their basements anytime someone catches a fish they they don't "agree" with.

I've caught 12" crappies out of a small pond/lake in the Cities that looks like a sewage holding pond - I'm sure I'd be mocked if I revealed that spot, too. I've also caught hundreds of 6-7" crappies on Owasso. There are folks who claim they know where the bigger ones are &, while I haven't found them, I'm not about to call them out. Why would I? Even if they're exaggerating, what the heck do I care?

C'mon guys. We all know that big fish of any species can be very location-specific. Perhaps y'all are in the 6" crappie holes, & Ace has stumbled on the 11" crappie hole. We all know there are places on many lakes like this.

Hey Max, I don't come out my basement for anything less than a heated and polarized political debate about global warming! Posts like these aren't worth getting up out of my chair. J/K

There are fish like that around (maybe even in Prior and Owasso), but I think we can all agree that the numbers of larger fish have decreased on the pressured lakes around here. I've got a honey hole that I've pulled 12+" crappies out of in the metro, too, and I'm not about to give it up either as it is a similar small shallow pond. CPR'ed fish below:

Good luck to all on Prior, you will have one less permanent to drive around. Just keep an eye out for the portables!

I have caught some pretty dandy size Crappies out of Prior also. Most of the big ones I have caught though were in the spring along the edges of the boat docks just when the bugs were starting to come out. ;\) How does that song go? -

Max, I wonder if your talking about one of my favorite little mud holes that in years past put out some 12" crappies some nice winter pike. My mud hole X starts with a V and surprisingly there are rarely anyone on the little pond. Great for ice fishing and Kayak

McGurk, ha! \:\) Yup, I know personally a couple of my old favorite lakes that have been virtually stripped of their big crappie populations. They're still there, but far fewer & further between.

Mr. Pike, I'm sure it's a different mud hole based on what you've posted. And I know from past conversations you have more than one that you've uncovered. I'm working at locating some new ones down in the Eagan neck of the woods - there are more potholes around here than there were up in my old St. Paul stomping grounds. Another couple of weeks & I can resume my exploring...

Where do I start looking for crappies and sunnies during the day on Tuesday? A few us have the day off and are looking for some crappies and sunnies. Life has gotten crazy of late and we havent had much time to hit the ice since mid season.

Thanks guys.

Forget the crappies today I went out and got into some really nice sun fish...They were the most aggrisive fish I have found all year. Couldn't keep the line in the water. Found some nice sized ones but did have to do a lot of picking through. All and all it was a blast.

Was out last night til 9:30. The crappies were thick on the Lowrance when we left. Caught some nice ones to keep. My friend even caught a 14" walleye. Really good night out on the lake last night.

We were out on the north end on Saturday, and marked a lot of fish, but couldn't get anything to bite except for a couple decent perch and a few small sunnies.

Same here on saturday...marked fish down there, but couldn't get them to hit very much. We only caught about 9 sunnies and 1 crappie.

I fished out of the sportsmen's access in 36 FOW.

I think we caught around 30 or 40 crappies on Sunday.

I was out a couple times last week and weekend and everywhere i was there was a lot of ice atleast 30". we were in an f350 and werent worried about it. i think the only thing you will have to watch for this weekend is along the shore especially after this warm week and maybe some rain today.

So, that was you in the camo lund? I'm bummed, I have to head back to the cities tomorrow for a few days, then back up for at least a few weeks. Got the dock in and fired up to get out chasing some crappies till opener!

On the south end...   Lots of ice on the main basin, but it is definitely deteriorating.  Some anglers have been fishing the open water at the mouth of the Rainy River in front of the Lighthouse Gap.  The rest of the basin is still iced over. Pike enthusiasts caught some big pike earlier last week tip up fishing in pre-spawn areas adjacent to traditional spawning areas.  8 - 14' of water using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring has been the ticket.  Ice fishing for all practical purposes is done for the year. The focus for the basin moving forward will be pike transitioning into back bays to spawn,  This is open water fishing and an opportunity available as the pike season is open year round on Lake of the Woods. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. With both the ice fishing and spring fishing on the Rainy River being so good, many are looking forward to the MN Fishing Opener on Saturday, May 11th.  It should be epic. On the Rainy River...  An absolutely incredible week of walleye and sturgeon fishing on the Rain Rainy River.     Walleye anglers, as a rule, caught good numbers of fish and lots of big fish.  This spring was one for the books.   To follow that up, the sturgeon season is currently underway and although every day can be different, many boats have caught 30 - 40 sturgeon in a day!  We have heard of fish measuring into the low 70 inch range.  Lots in the 60 - 70 inch range as well.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  Open water is continuing to expand in areas with current.  The sight of open water simply is wetting the pallet of those eager for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th.   A few locals were on the ice this week, targeting pike.  Some big slimers were iced along with some muskies as well.  If you like fishing for predators, LOW is healthy!

Early bird gets the worm some say...   I have it on good authority that this very special angler caught no walleyes or muskies and that any panfish caught were released unharmed.
