Went out yesterday with my son. Fished fron 8:30 til 1:00. Caught about 15 crappies, 6 were decent size and a 32" sturgeon. Marked a lot of fish, most were just loookers.

Anyone fish near the open water by the Allan S. King plant? There seems to be a lot of interest in this area.

I think they are targeting sauger near the open water, better hurry, the season is only 3 more days.

Sturgeon are commonly caught on the river. In the summer, I've seen folks pull one sturgeon after another out of the hole between Hiline pt. and the King plant outlet. From what I've heard, that is what most of the folks around the outlet are catching through the ice.

I ended up hooking up three of them, back to back to back, last week... quite a rush on ultralight gear!

man does that sound like fun do you just jig with a minnow like you would for walleye? (thats how my friend hooked into his)

Really?! I just clipped this out of the 07 online regulations for the Minn-Wisco border waters. I'm fishing Sunday, probably won't catch any waldos anyhow..

Here's the link regulations

Thats weird. So if you have a MN license you can fish till March 2nd but with a WI license can only fish till March 1st? Thats what it looks like to me.

Hey UW and Blue I don't think either of you have to worry about when the season is over. I haven't seen either of you catch a walleye or sauger in a LONGGGGGGGG time. Just giving you guys a hard time. I sent you guys an email, I think I will hit the Croix Friday afternoon to try and fine tune things for LOW!!!!! Hey blue what happened to your other picture? Ruby is way cuter than any old fish on a beer label.

I had the debate last year about witch set of rules do you fallow if you fish boarder waters. I called and talked to CO's from both sides and the ruling I am told is If your a Wis. resident is depends on witch side of the river you put in on for what set of rules you are going by. For Minn. it does not matter where you put in a MN CO will consider you a Minn. Resident and hold you to Minn. rules. I had to call and ask because Wis. rules let you use more up to three baits total so you could have two on one and one on another. It took about ten phone calls to find the information.

So, if you are from Minnesota, or have a Minnesota license, you can fish walleye through this weekend?

If you are from Wisconsin, or only have a Wisconsin license, today is the last day for walleye? But I can use three lines?

You obey the regs of the state your license is for, but as for the season on the Croix, it goes both ways. A MN license holder can fish eyes on the Croix until the season ends, just as a WI license holder can. A MN license only allows you 2 lines, so you can only use 2, but a WI license allows for 3. A WI license has its plus' on the Croix. If the Croix has a daily limit that is more generous than the MN state limit and you have a MN license, you must obey the MN limit. Hope that isn't too confusing.

I'm not there, so I can't tell exactly what's going on but it looks like a large area of open water developed in the last day with all of the heavy snow on the east side of wake em up Narrows. These two photos are from my Ring Camera facing north towards Niles Point.  You can see what happened with all of snow that fell in the last three days, though the open water could have been wind driven. Hard to say. .

Black Bay had great ice before but a few spots near rockpiles where there were spots of open water. It looks like the weight of the snow has created a little lake in the middle of the bay.

On the south end...   Thanks to some cold spring weather, ice fishing continues strong for those still ice fishing.  The bite remains very good.  Most resorts have pulled their fish houses off for the year, however, some still have fish houses out and others are allowing ATV and side by sides.  Check social media or call ahead to your favorite resort for specifics. Reports this week for walleyes and saugers remain excellent.   A nice mix of jumbo perch, pike, eelpout, and an occasional crappie, tullibee or sturgeon being reported by anglers. Jigging one line and using a live minnow on the second line is the way to go.  Green, glow red, pink and gold were good colors this week.     Monster pike are on a tear!  Good number of pike, some reaching over 45 inches long, being caught using tip ups with live suckers or dead bait such as smelt and herring in 8 - 14' of water.   As always, work through a resort or outfitter for ice road conditions.  Safety first always. Fish houses are allowed on the ice through March 31st, the walleye / sauger season goes through April 14th and the pike season never ends. On the Rainy River...  The river is opened up along the Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale, the Frontier boat ramp and Vidas boat ramp.  This past week, much of the open water skimmed over with the single digit overnight temps.   Areas of the river have popped open again and with temps getting warmer, things are shaping up for the last stretch through the rest of the spring season, which continues through April 14th.   Very good numbers of walleyes are in the river.  Reports this week, even with fewer anglers, have been good.  When temps warm up and the sun shines, things will fire up again.   Jigs with brightly colored plastics or jigs with a frozen emerald shiner have been the desired bait on the river.  Don't overlook slow trolling crankbaits upstream as well.   Good reports of sturgeon being caught on the river as well.  Sturgeon put the feed bag on in the spring.  The bite has been very good.  Most are using a sturgeon rig with a circle hook loaded with crawlers or crawlers / frozen emerald shiners. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing is winding down up at the Angle.  Walleyes, saugers, and a number of various species in the mix again this week.  The bite is still very good with good numbers of fish.  The one two punch of jigging one line and deadsticking the second line is working well.   Check with Angle resorts on transport options from Young's Bay.  Call ahead for ice road guidelines.

With the drifting, kind of hard to tell for sure, but I'm guessing about a foot and still lightly snowing. Cook end!

How much snow did you get on Vermilion?
    • Mike89
lake here refroze too...  started opening again yesterday with the wet snow and wind...  very little ice left today...
    • Hookmaster
A friend who has a cabin between Alex and Fergus said the lake he's on refroze. He texted me a pic from March 12th when it was open and one from 23rd when it wasn't. 🤯
    • SkunkedAgain
I don't think that there has been any ice melt in the past few weeks on Vermilion. Things looked like a record and then Mother Nature swept in again.   I'll give my revised guess of April 21st
